Many people cannot agree on whether the European Middle Ages were “Dark Ages” or an “Early Renaissance”. A Dark Age is a time during which a civilization undergoes a decline, while a Renaissance is a new period of growth or activity. Even though there is an equal amount of evidence for both the Dark Ages and the Early Renaissance, some pieces were more effective than others. The European Middle Ages was an Early Renaissance because citizens started to begin new lives as different roles, the feudal system was slowly being forgotten, and the Magna Carta was published.

The word dark ages is referred as Barbaric times and Intellectual Depression. The historians called it intellectual depression because they think that the little knowledge and invention and innovations is why very little came from the Middle Ages. Many historians didn't give it much thought before labeling it because it was only in the beginning of the Middle Ages that not much happened. But they grouped it all and came to the depiction of labeling it the "Dark Age". Over time, "Dark Ages" also lost meaning. When historians first had first used the term, it was meant as a time of darkness where nothing came out.

When you think of something that is dark, you think of it as dreary, lifeless, or even evil. So when you think about the “Dark Ages” you may wonder, were times really like that? With a lot of research and patience we have come to find out that that time, may have been completely opposite. Not much came out of the Middle Ages but there sure was innovation. The people of this era were definitely not dreary or evil so no, ‘the Dark Ages’ is not an appropriate term to describe the Middle Ages.

First, “The Dark Ages” was the time that followed the collapse of the Western Roman Empire but before the Renaissance from the 5th to 15th century. Very few writings survived during the Dark Ages, so most believe that people during this time were illiterate;

Europe was in a dark age because of the Bubonic Plague, Crusades destruction, and king Henry's cruelty. The bubonic plague was so catastrophic because Europe was so compact and people thought it was the end of the world so they caused havoc, stole, and killed for fun. Also, it was so horrible because a symptom was boils and bubbles on the skin that would pop and puss would shoot out. “The Black Death was such a frightful thing that when it got into a house, as was said, no one remained”. Secondly, the Crusades were a terrible thing because there was a lot of bloodshed.

The time period between 400 AD and 1400 AD was not a Dark Age for Europe and not a time of cultural decay and decline. It was not a Dark Age for the following reasons: Cathedrale Notre Dame’s construction, the laws of currency that were established, and how Europe prospered during this time period. Cathedrale Notre Dame’s construction showed how far culturally Europe got by the late Middle Ages. “Common features of gothic Cathedrals included architectural innovations. (Document G: Gothic Cathedrals)” This piece of text shows me that Europe developed their architectural design; gothic architecture which originated in France.

The term “Dark Ages” is one of the most common terms used to refer to the period known as the Middle Ages. Encompassed in this time frame are the years 400 A.D. and 1400 A.D., which mark the beginning and end of the Dark Ages. During this age, rural towns that were smaller and less populated were common. Since invasions were also an issue, towns tried to provide security and safety to the townspeople by using the feudal lord's armies as guards. It was also during this time that a new religious movement called Monasticism developed.

The first reason this time period is not a “Dark Age” is that the education in Europe improved. In Document F, the texts states that “Universities were founded all throughout Europe.” They introduced a new form of education in Spain to France, England, and Italy that replaced the monastery and church schools. Document E states that people studied liberal arts in school. Most people from the Middle Ages wanted greatly to learn from philosophers.

There are many factors that one could say to support the theory that Europe was in a dark age such as, the first crusade, the black death, and the government. The black death was the biggest reason that Europe was in a dark age because the black death killed one third of Europe's population. As read in Document A ¨ Frightened people abandoned the house and fled to another.¨ this shows how there were small towns, small population and isolated communities, as you can see since the disease spread so quickly, people would do anything to keep them and their family safe. When the first crusade started many fought to to their deaths. Many Christians, knights, lords, and peasants killed 70,000 muslims so they could have salvation. In document B

The Dark ages was the period of time where the Europeans has to face the problems in their lives and difficulties on them.
