Darkly Dreaming Dexter, written by Jeff Lindsay, is about a serial killer who seeks justice by killing people who have done bad things. The main character, Dexter Morgan, is a charming and handsome man, but something in his past made him be the serial killer he is. Dexter is a blood spatter expert for the Miami Police Department, where his sister Deborah works there in vice. Dexter tries to help Deborah climb the ladder by finding hunches for the murders of prostitutes, while obeying the Code of Harry. Dexter isn’t a normal superhero like Batman, Superman, or other detectives like Dupin and Holmes. Some may not even consider him a superhero because he is a serial killer. However, Dexter can be thought of as a superhero because of his vigilante …show more content…
He was an outsider, partially because of his traumatic childhood transforming him into an emotionless human, but also, by living by the Code of Harry to control his urges. Another of Harry’s lessons was stay neat, dress nicely, avoid attention (Lindsay, 97). Avoiding attention and being an outsider helped Dexter to hide his identity of being a superhero and not allowing other people to think something was up with him. He was able to kill and protect Miami without the police knowing he was actually a serial killer while showing no emotions and faking human interactions. Showing no emotions and faking human interactions in society “represents his “burden,” explicitly, but at the same time his gift, the thing that enables him to catch criminals (Muir, 8). In other words, Dexter is able to fake acting like an emotional human but still be able to use “his gift,” to kill. So without this characteristic of being an outsider, Dexter would not be able to perform his gift of being a secret serial killer. Being an outsider keeps the attention away from Dexter, thus allowing him to fight evil and be a superhero. Readers and viewers could argue that Dexter is not a superhero whatsoever. They could say Dexter is a monster because of his lack of empathy and for being a serial killer. Ultimately, he kills to seek justice and makes his city safer for the people, just like other
“I can kill a man, dismember his body, and be home in time for Letterman. But knowing what to say when my girlfriend's feeling insecure... I'm totally lost”-Dexter Morgan (Hall, 2007). Dexter Morgan is a fictional serial killer from Showtime’s series “Dexter”, but the writers and actors have portrayed a real life serial killer. Manuel Prado is the real Dexter Morgan. Prado was a Miami cop who started with smaller crime and worked his way up to becoming a serial killer. ”Prosecutor David Waksman told the Miami Herald: "He was very cold. He was doing robberies and went home and slept like a baby. He was proud of what he did."” (International, 2012) Real life serial killers do not have any empathy. They kill their victims and then return to
Dexter in the story started off as a very young boy who worked as a caddy at a golf course. There he met Miss Jones for the very first time. Judy Jones was a beautiful, young woman who came from a glittery family, but was also very cunning with her “preposterous smile” . Dexter was very
First it is necessary to understand the psychology of serial killer. Serial killers are either labeled as a psychopath or labeled as having anti-social personality disorder. A quality anti-personality disorder which Dexter has is “Being able to act witty and charming. (NIH.com)” Dexter is witty in the sense that he knows how to not get caught and he has found a way to fit into society without anyone suspecting him has a killer, Dexter is also charming and this is portrayed in the series since his boss at the Miami Police Department clearly has a crush on him. “Break the law repeatedly. (NIH.com)” is yet another characteristic, this is also shown in Dexter. When stalking his potential victims Dexter constantly breaks
Night by Elie Wiesel was one of the best books I have ever read. Night is the story about Elie’s horrible time spent in Auschwitz and Buna the death camps. This story impacted me the most because all of this is real. Elie’s mother and sister were murdered as soon as they arrived. The story goes on telling his unimaginable experiences with his father in 1944 during the Holocaust.
Richard Ramirez is an infamous serial murderer who terrorized Los Angeles, California in 1985. The media gave him the name the “Night Stalker” when he was on his vicious rampage of forcing himself into the homes of his victims late at night and committing his heinous crimes. Though he was only convicted of thirteen murders, he had many more victims. His crimes were so random, disorganized, and impulsive that the law enforcement officials of Los Angeles had no luck finding Ramirez for months as he grew increasingly more violent. (Tripod.com, 2012) Finally, in August of 1985, the police had enough information from many of his victims to release a sketch of him to the media. The sketch had only been on the news for one
they had it. They have nobody but themselves which leads to nothing but evil. Isabelle-Marie
I believe we as a society are intrigued with shows like Dexter because they allow us a temporary escape from reality. A reality in which we witness injustices occur in our court systems such as a legal loop hole allowing a guilty person to essentially walk free and justice not being served for the victim. I will attempt to explain why these characters are thriving as pop culture icons.
The following is a summary on the short essay The Dark Night of the Soul by Richard E Miller. This short essay is an essay that has been written with a main point always in mind, that reading and writing has very powerful influences people and their imagination but, the act of reading and writing is not being utilized as much in the modern world. Richard has created an essay that proves his point by taking five very different short stories and giving each a twist that helps the reader see the power of reading. As the reader is chronologically going through the essay he or she is given many possible meanings of the essay. The meaning and the
As one studies other viewing and readings such as Silence of the Lambs, Dexter, Perfume, Natural Born Killers, True Blood, Dead until Dark, and The Walking Dead it can be found that both nature and nurture take a part in creating a serial killer. Dexter Morgan is a serial killer that developed a want to kill as a child. Growing up with a foster family he had all the love, nurture, and support of a normal child, but he had a missing part of him with the mystery of his dead mother. Harry, his foster father had recognized Dexter’s need to kill early in life and was able to teach him how to kill properly. Harry was smart in understanding there was no way to contain or stop Dexter’s desire to kill, but he
In contrast, Dexter is easy going and fun. Also, he spends most of his time hanging out with the neighborhood friends. The siblings have a very different in their work ethic. Demetrius is a responsible child, works
In conclusion the desire for love and the desire for wealth is not always the key to happiness. In Dexter's case his desire or dream of love caused his nothing but misery and a broken heart.
Have you ever have felt like two completely different people? Dexter Morgan has been all of these throughout his entire life since he was little. His mother was killed in front of him when he was at a very young age. A cop named Harry Morgan had founded Dexter when he was in a pool of blood beside his mother. He taught Dexter all of these ways to not get caught. To keep his hands clean without being under someone’s radar. Dexter’s character arch is symbolic of the human struggle to move from the primitive monster to the noble and compassionate messiah.
In many cases in media, the character is portrayed as a danger to others or a psychotic killer because of their antisocial personality disorder. This is evident in the movie series “The Dark Knight Rises” in the character the Joker as well as the television series “Dexter” in the character Dexter Morgan. These characters are attributed with antisocial personality disorder, emphasizing and exaggerating their symptoms, especially their disregard of the safety of others and themselves, as well as their lack of sympathy. Due to their symptoms, the film and television serious deems that these characters are “psychotic” and are murderers. According to Smith (1996), they explain that those who do suffer from the disorder are not murderers, but rather they impose a danger to themselves more than to others. The causes depicted in the film and television series essentially explains that those who suffer with the disorder is due to an early traumatic experiences which was evident in the Joker and Dexter. Although a traumatic life experience is a cause of the disorder, but it is not the only cause. Ferguson C. J. (2010) explains that genetics is significant when examining the cause of the disorder. He continues to explain and provide evidence that the genetic material is triggered by the experiences that the person encounters. By having the Joker’s and Dexter’s disorder be explained
A number of strange incidents occur throughout the story. Jack finds a wasps' nest while maintaining the roof, uses an appropriate wasp bomb on it, and puts it in Danny's room. That night, although Jack had checked there were no wasps still in the nest, Danny is stung several times, and when Jack manages to put a bowl over the nest, there are many wasps trapped inside. Then in an almost hypnotic fit after spending too much time going through the hotel's papers in the boiler room, Jack smashes the radio, effectively cutting them off from the rest of the world as snow has fallen heavily, and reaching the nearest town has become impossible except by snowmobile.
Dexter idolizes those wealthy men and does everything possible to resemble rich men. For example, he asks the best tailor in America to make a suit for him. In sum, he becomes addicted to social prestige since he believes that happiness lies in it.
