At this day center my job was to assist and teach basic work skills to adults with intellectual disabilities. I assisted with daily routines and provided therapy, occupational, and speech support. The majority of the clients had extreme medical needs and/ or behaviors. It was our job to conduct behavior prevention and interventions as needed. One of my specific job duties was to plan and implement client outings in the community. If weather did not permit, I planned and implemented activities in the center as individual and/ or group activities. As a float instructor I had to know all the instructor positions in order to fill in for the staff as needed. The Independence Center also counted on me to do the training for all new staff. I also

In working as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, I am learning the importance of quality individualizes services and how they can support people with disabilities to prepare for obtaining employment. I have been have been participating closely with individuals that have a disability to help them achieve greater levels of independence by assisting them to develop goals and look for opportunities for employment. I am finding out that you have to really put a lot of effort as a vocational counselor in gathering medical, educational and different evaluations to determine eligibility and to help with the planning process of assisting the individual to choose the right occupation for themselves. In planning for a consumer to reach their
A few months ago I worked as an attendant to a 12-year-old boy with autism. I would go to his house and help out his family with anything that had to do with him. Some of the things that I would do were pick him up from school, prepare food him, and help him complete daily tasks. He did not speak at all, so it was really hard for me at first, but as the weeks went by I learned his facial expressions, his chart, and his sign language. Although it was difficult to work with him, I would like to continue working with special needs kids but in another setting.
For two years I worked as a camp counselor for the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA). In this time, I have worked day camps, inclusion camps, social program,s and even an overnight camp for children, teens, and adults with special needs. My responsibilities were to plan crafts and activities that were inclusive to the various needs and abilities of the campers. Most of all, being a camp counselor meant creating a safe and fun environment for each
Joni had worked for over 25 years in the local school system as an Educational Tech II, otherwise known as a teacher’s aide. In this capacity, she got to know generations of teachers, students and their families. In addition, working with high needs students with challenging intellectual disabilities, she sought to identify opportunities for her students to gain practical knowledge in local organizations and life skills to ensure their dignity as adults. To create these connections she often interacted with numerous small businesses, non-profits, and community-based organizations.
Belle has a very unique job, she goes to school conferences and is typically the only person who specializes in children with special needs through the school system. She told me that she is probably one of maybe three in the state that holds this position. Her position entails Medicaid coordination and she helps to coordinate and work with PCG (Public Consulting Group), making sure therapists are documenting and are billing for Medicaid. Belle explained to me that her job involves working with Medicaid a lot and she feels is another reason why her job has so many different aspects to it. As an EC social worker for families, Belle is referral based therefore she does not go to schools unless she has an IEP (Individual Education Program) meeting or needs to meet with a parent at their request -- instead of going to the family’s house. Belle explained that a teacher will get her involved in a case if they see that something is going to support a child’s IEP so that she can take action and help the child and their family to connect with community resources. Most of her discussions with parents are face-to-face or over the phone so that she can connect with the person in a more personal way.
Hence, this being another reason why I would like to be considered for the role. It would allow me to work in a similar environment and one that I know I am comfortable and happy in My feelings were confirmed when I attended Lynden day care centre for work experience. I found being with people with learning difficulties fun, engaging and rewarding. The activities ranged from being pro active in an art class to helping others play pool. I made quite a few friends!
As mentioned earlier in the paper, the employees are staffed by parents with children with disabilities. That personal connection helps with hiring people that are passionate for helping other children with disability find resources to help them be successful. There are only two positions that requires a bachelor’s degree, one being the executive director and the other being the assistant director of the facility. The remaining positions only recommended at least two years of college. The other options for employment are parent advocate, training coordinator, student liaison, and volunteers. The facility does not have many positions for people with degrees because they believed they are cabled of educating people ad training them to become advocates. The centered also, states that the professionals that are hired are not lawyers, so they have no need to have people with degrees beyond a
I believe that in order to have a nice running daycare I am going to have to work on telling people no. No matter how much it hurts in side in order for me to be successful I am going to have to open my mouth and speak on what I believe is right. So for now on I am willing to work on this. If I don’t feel like doing something for someone or if someone wants something done at last min I am going to work on telling them no maybe next time I can help if you tell me in advance or
Do you ever question what you want to be doing for a living? Currently I have two careers I am interested in working in a daycare facility and owning my own in-home daycare. Before deciding between the two there is a few things I had to consider such as the pay, the hours, and investment needed. When working in a daycare facility your pay can range from $7.50-$11.21 making the median hourly salary $8.70. When owning a daycare there is no set salary your salary goes based on your customers unless your customers are willing to pay the price you set then your business can go either way. Next I would consider the hours, when working in a facility your hours are likely to go based on when you are needed as opposed to if I had my own daycare I
My duties also included maintaining records: health as well as individual education plans (IEP). I along with other teachers, planned parent meetings, home visits and conferences.
In the spring of 2016 I was hired on as a staff member. I now had the title: Recreational Therapy Technician. Most of the job was the same except, the buddies I was assigned had more severe disabilities and behavioral problems. I was also in charge of taking campers to the bathroom, feeding some campers lunch, and helping campers change for swimming. These tasks for many seem very minuscule, but for a person with decreased motor skill it can be a rather challenging.
During my first year of college, I accepted a position at a nursing home as an activity assistant
There are many different types of careers that work with children with disabilities. One of those careers is an in-home behavioral therapist. An in-home behavioral therapist goes to the family’s home to work with the child on modifying undesirable behavior and reinforcing positive behavior. They help these children work on appropriate behavior and improve the child’s quality of life. Behavioral therapist or ABA therapy helps children and their families in many different ways and that is why I chose to interview a behavioral therapist named Alyssa to gain an input of how she feels about her job.
Caring for an individual with a special needs is a commitment that can be challenging. The staff role is worth a great deal and service because of the support you are rendering to the individual in their daily living and enabling them to be a part of their family and community. (Turiana, n.d) The organization acts as a carer support itself especially to those who are terminally ill, or has an ongoing health and intellectual disability provided that they need a 24 hours supervision or care.
