In the book While he was Away, the title shows what will happen in the story. It hints that Penna’s boyfriend, David, will go off to war. I believe the title shows that with the absence of David, she will learn more about herself and her family. Throughout the book she goes on many adventures with her new friends and becomes closer to her family members. With David being gone, she was able to grow individually. With this broad title, the story was able to cover a lot of topics. Not only did it talk about their love, but it showed who Penna truly was. While he was away, Penna was able to learn many life lessons and become closer to her loved ones. Having this situation happen, she found that she was strong enough to handle anything that comes her way.

He searches for ways to get in contact with Keiko, and eventually finds a job that will allow him to find her while he is serving food at the camp’s cafeteria. His desperation to find her shows the impact Keiko has on his life. He tells her he will wait for her, however long it takes, so they can be together.
