The death penalty has been argued about for years. Only 19 states (including district of Columbia) do not have the death penalty. Because of the cost of death vs. life in prison, irrevocable mistakes, and morality, the death penalty should definitely be discontinued.

Three out of five murder cases in which the victim was white and the defendant was black resulted in the defendant receiving a death penalty. The appeal process is a very long and expensive process that can go on forever and costs the government millions. Capital punishment, otherwise known as the death penalty, has been effective tool in our country’s justice system since its inception. When an inmate is given this, the harshest sentence available, it is always with just cause. Despite all the pros and cons of capital punishment, society must think about what is truly correct and most practical for our world. Capital punishment is not functional in today’s legal system. There are countless amounts of evidence that proves these legal killings to be ineffective. We, as Americans, must correct this irrational practice before it does anymore permanent damage.

Many who disagree with the death penalty believe it is immoral, discriminates, is very expensive, increases crime, and is only a way to carry out revenge. This, however, is not true. Capital punishment should be legal because it is moral, by not allowing criminals to roam the streets once again. It does not discriminate against those of color or the poor, and is actually less expensive than life imprisonment.
