The biggest argument regarding same sex marriage would be religion, although many churches and religious or spiritual people have been accepting LGBTQ+ individuals into their lives and churches. In an article called, “Catholics Can Embrace Same-Sex Marriage Without Compromising Their Faith,” a catholic man and author, Larry Donnelly, says, “My position was rooted in the Catholic faith I am still proud to practice and in a stubborn refusal to acknowledge that a civil marriage shouldn't be defined by the tenets of my religion.” Donnelly recognizes that his religion is very strict and opposed to the lifestyle of same sex couples but he also points out that his views should not stand in the way of someone else's rights. Through his God, he has …show more content…
Although DeBernardo admits that the church still opposes same-sex marriage, he believes the pope's effort to integrate gay people into the church more fully is an important first step in repairing the historically tense relations between the Catholic Church and the gay community.” The quote DeBernardo used is from Pope Francis, one of the most iconic leaders of Catholicism, leads his people to acceptance of the LGBTQ+ for her understands what differences they bring to the churches. Regardless, people are making effort to welcome non cis/heterosexaul people into their lives and churches. Even strict religions are becoming more aware of the fact that humans are being denied basic rights and the ability to live their lives, knowing this they are conforming to support the gay …show more content…
That being said, marriage could be easily be opened up to larger group of people. In the article “Same-Sex Marriage Furthers the American Values of Freedom and Equality,” gay-rights activist and public speaker, John Corvino explains, “Heterosexual marriage is, and will remain, an option in all fifty states. Marriage licenses are not a finite resource, where giving them to gays means taking them away from straights. There is, in Evan Wolfson's apt phrase, ‘enough marriage to share.’” Expanding the amount of people who are allotted marriage doesn’t put heterosexualls at risk for marriage licences are but a piece of paper. In fact, parts of Alabama backlashed at the legalization of gay marriage by banning marriage in full according to Alex Watt, writer for UNILAD. Additionally, Larry Donnelly author of “Chaotics Can Embrace Same-sex Marriage Without Compromising Their Faith,” argues, “Marriage equality did not affect existing marriages, nor did it stop tens of thousands of heterosexual couples from taking the plunge. It became settled law and a fact of life, and people have moved on.” Regardless if people didn’t enjoy this it would be the same and instead of fighting they carried on with their lives, although this wasn’t a common mindset it wouldn’t stop the law from being passed. Nevertheless, marriage hasn’t changed in any way for straight
The argument over the legalization of same sex marriages is rapidly becoming one of the most vigorously advocated reform subjects in recent law review. Being gay and loving someone is not illegal, but uniting that couple in a legal marriage is rejected by most of society in this country. Each state has had to deal with legal issues concerning same sex marriages to some extent. Most supporters of the ban on gay marriages believe that it would be a strong cause of immorality and corruption of the American family. People who do not support same sex marriages believe that it would create an unhealthy family, and could cause serious harm to children in that family, while supporters
It seems like there has been some kind of renewal in the Catholic Church ever since Argentina’s Bishop, Father Francis became the new Pope. This is especially evident with the Church’s stance on homosexuality. Although there has not been any major changes between Pope Francis’s stance on homosexuality and Pope Benedict XVI’s, the press has defined the former as the “good” Pope and the latter as the “bad” one. Therefore, many of the world’s approximately one billion Catholics think that Pope Francis is insane for taking such a liberal stance in the Church and opening the Catholic community to these supposed sinners. Ever since its conception, the Catholic Church has taken a bellicose stance against gays. They
The United States is currently embroiled in a battle over issues regarding civil rights of its citizens and what rights are constituted by that term. In the past, civil rights issues have been fought over women's rights and those of African Americans among others all in the name of seeking equality. Perhaps the most vocal group discussing civil rights in the United States at present are gay marriage activists who are fighting for same-sex couples to be able to marry. These individuals feel that marriage is a civil right and that there is no legal reason why people of the same gender cannot be legally married in the United States, a perspective which is shared by many people who are themselves not homosexual. Homosexuality and what rights should be afforded to same-sex couples have been in the forefront of politics for the last few years and rightly so. Before this period, gay people had to fight to get recognized and for their relationships to even be legal. For most of American history, homosexuals have had to hide their sexual orientation or fear ostracism and marginalization by the moral and social majority. This oppression is still seen in the legislation of the United States. Those who do not agree almost always use their religious beliefs as a reason for denying homosexuals this right despite the fact that the United States Constitution bans legislation being based upon religious perspectives. There simply is no reasonable argument against same-sex
The topic of homosexual marriages has been a very hotly contested issue and has in recent years become an even more heavily debated topic, particularly in the Catholic Church. Now, Catholics have always had a very definite stance on homosexuality and more importantly homosexual marriage. They have always had the belief that marriage is, and should remain, exclusively between a man and a woman. I too, being a Catholic myself, held this belief for quite some time until I actually looked into scripture, and I discovered that the Catholic Church has been thinking backwards. Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, homosexual marriage has always been deemed an abomination by scripture, tradition, and holy fathers, but through scripture
One of the biggest debates about same-sex relationships would be the legalization of same-sex marriage. There is more to same-sex marriage than politics and sexual practices. Over the last century, society has become more open minded to the gay lifestyle. Because we live in a great country bounded by the moralities of freedom, in which we are constitutionally promised justice and the pursuit of happiness -- each person reserves the rights to
It is currently 2017 and the idea of gay marriage being such a hot topic in the U.S is astonishing. A survey showed that about sixty-two percent of citizens wanted same-sex marriage while roughly thirty-two percent didn't. Back in the year 2004, only about thirty percent of the public supported same-sex marriage and sixty-three percent opposed (Milligan). The numbers seemed to have switched positions over the last thirteen years. Moreover, an estimation on July 1, 2016 showed that around 323,00,000 people currently residing in America, so knowing that the acceptance rate is over half is quite impressing. (CITE?) Since some states have allowed the marriage of same-sex couples, the amount of people who have gotten married has gone up. According to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, more than 547,000 same-sex couples married in the U.S. This number includes around 157,000 couples who had gotten married within the two years of the state's law passing of same-sex marriage (Crary). Those citizens are about half a million people who are legally married. This fact should show the government that a good portion of our population is more than likely to be gay, bi, or lesbian.
David Masci conducts interviews on the topic of same-sex marriage and presents them in the transcripts titled “An Argument against Same-Sex Marriage: An Interview with Rick Santorum” and “An Argument for Same-Sex Marriage: An Interview with Jonathan Rauch”. Masci interviews two people with completely different stances regarding same-sex marriage. He interviews Rick Santorum, an ex-senator and devout Christian, who is against same-sex marriage then Jonathan Rauch, a gay rights activist, who is for same-sex marriage. Santorum and Rauch both spend a great amount of time speaking about the institution of marriage and although they make some compelling arguments, I feel that neither provide an argument that I can fully agree with.
The debate over same-sex marriage has been a prominent issue in our society over many years now, appearing in several ballot initiatives such as California 's Proposition 8. The idea of allowing two people of the same gender to enter into the institution of marriage has brought out drastic emotions and reactions from many different groups of people. Those who engage in the debate believe
If straights can get married then gays should be able to as well. I have every hope that all supreme courts move into the direction for marriage equality. Today, our nation moves closer toward its ideals of equality and fairness for all. We need to reevaluate how strictly our
There are 1049 legal reasons why gay couples would want marital status to be recognized by the government. There are also 1049 rights intend for same-sex couples, these rights include: “hospital care choices for yourself and your partner; power of attorney for you and your partner; right to visit your partner in the ICU; rights to retirement plan decisions; rights to survivor benefits from social security, and the list continues.” (TPF Student Action). The US Supreme Court on June 26th, 2015 ruled that the US Constitution grant the right for same-sex couples to marry in all of the 50 states in the US. Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy stated in the majority opinion: "The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them."(CNN) There are many conservatives that are completely against the idea of gay marriage and they have stated that “they will fight to have the Supreme Court ruling overturned.” Politicians with a Christian background stated that homosexuality is an “abomination to defend their religious arguments.”(CNN) A rule, the United States set up from the beginning, states that “separation needs to be made between religion and government.” With the controversy of gay marriage, lines begin to get blurred and religion starts to influence the government’s mind.
There is a lot of controversy about gay marriage and whether or not it should be legalized in certain states that haven 't yet legalized it. My opinion on this topic is that it should not be legalized for various reasons. My reasons on this have nothing to do with religion because religion shouldn’t have anything to do with their opinion; religion is a biased opinion because of its authenticity. Another thing that shouldn’t be considered is their opinion that doesn’t have a reasoning behind it like when people say that they don’t like to see same-sex people doing couple things out in the open. I will talk about children with same-sex parents needing a father and mother figure, ‘slippery slope’ chain reaction, and reproduction problems. I will also be talking about citizens who do not approve of their tax money going towards gay marriage.
“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord with good will, who am I to judge?” Pope Francis (Willey, 7). On July 29th, four months after he became pope, Pope Francis shocked the world with that statement. He called out to all Catholics and people to accept the homosexual community with grace and love. No pope before him had ever done that. Even though he has said this, some think that this is not far enough. When a specific denomination or church says that a same-sex couple cannot be married, that church or denomination is slapped with the accusatory terms of bigotry and/or homophobia. These churches become disgraced and tarnished all because of that one policy. To some, the greatest offender of “homophobia” is the Catholic Church. There needs to be more clarity when it comes to the Catholic Church’s position.
Same Sex relationships are and always have always been frowned upon in the eyes of the Church. The Catholic Church takes a very strict approach to their view on same sex relationships. Despite Pope Francis taking a tolerant stance on same sex marriage, the banning of marriage throughout the Catholic church still causes negative feelings through the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and queer communities. For the Church to gain the full approval of these communities some major changes need to be made. The Church needs to take a more modernized approach to dealing with same sex relationships and to look fully into each individual's self fulfillment.
Everyone should have the right to marry whoever they choose to marry, they have their own right to do as they please. No one should be judged based on their own preferences. If they look at it in a bigger grand of scale it can be truly beneficial for everyone, ways that gay marriage can benefit majority of people is that, gay marriage can bring financial gain to federal sates, who would not want that, everyone would want to benefit finically. By doing those things it will boost the economy in a tremendous way. Do the bishops seriously imagine that legalizing gay marriage will result in thousands of parties to heterosexual marriages suddenly deciding to get divorced so they can marry a person of the same sex? (Malcolm Turnbull).
Throughout time marriage equality for same-sex couples has been non-existent. Now, gay rights are at the forefront of political and social reform. Same-sex marriage has recently become a fiercely debated topic; however, only nine states allow same-sex marriage and only a few allow domestic partnerships, because of religion, generational differences, and the general and voting public that still denounce it, marriage equality is a natural right that is being stolen from same-sex couples.
