Defense of Self, Home and Family. "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (Second Amendment) The second amendment was written during a time when a gun was required by law to be in every household for the protection of the residents. Don B. Kates, a civil rights attorney and criminologist, writes in “Is Gun Ownership a Right” that almost all civilian males of military age had to appear with their own guns when called for militia training or service (13). In those days traveling a long distance was met with many perils, highway men, and dangerous animals to name but a few, a gun was needed to insure ones safety. Today it is considered foolish and unsafe to carry a gun, In fact anti-gun activists would have you believe that you are in more danger carrying a gun then not carrying one. Oppressive gun laws are making it difficult for honest law abiding citizens to obtain and carry firearms. While some laws are effective; such as not selling to convicted felons, others gun laws are doing more harm then good. The government needs to change or abolish certain gun laws. One such law is the Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA). While it is true some schools may be better off with no guns and students carrying guns should remain strictly forbidden, arming teachers on the other hand would not only cut down on violent behaver in schools but would be a deterrent to further school
