Define Heroism Research Paper

A hero is defined as someone who in the face of danger steps up and puts others needs before theirs, expecting no reward in return. In the article “What Makes a Hero?” by Phillip Zimbardo, the author expresses that everyone has the ability to help others, whether it is a small deed like leading a guiding hand to someone who needs it, or it can be as intense as pulling someone out of a burning car. The writer attempts to emphasize the importance of doing the right thing by stating,  “Few people do evil and fewer act heroically.” (Zimbardo). In addition, heroes act not for the fame or the money, but for their own satisfaction. Everyone has their own idea of what a hero is and what a hero does. Most people think that guys like superman and batman are heroes because they have incredible superpowers and they are famous people who receive glory. Many people describe heroes as strong and indestructible people, however, heroes are actually not always famous and they are not always the way that society portrays them. In fact, most heroes are ordinary people who do extraordinary things and have notable traits for society to follow. Although heroes are mostly overlooked or misinterpreted by many people, a hero is always a courageous, selfless, and persistent person who has the determination to create change for the better.

Many heroes exists in todays world. Some are just fictional but the real ones are the ones worth mentioning. A true hero is a person who is willing to sacrifice everything for the well being of others. they're giving personalities cause them to give everything they can to help others. They are constantly in a race to fight for something beneficial to all.

For someone to be considered a hero, he/she must have done something for the common good. While there may be a small group who believes that what someone did is heroic, what the person did could be considered morally wrong by the rest of society. Heroes are not just people such as Superman. A hero could be the teacher who saved her students during a fire in the school. This can be seen in everyday life, movies, and books. A hero is not someone who does something that only a few other people agree with. There are rules and laws for a reason and those are not meant to be broken or disobeyed. Guy Montag from the book Fahrenheit 451 by author Ray Bradbury cannot be considered a heroic figure because he took illegal actions such as stealing books

“I think we all do heroic things, but hero is not a noun, it’s a verb.” Said Robert Downey Jr. If people saved the day with superpowers and knew how to fly then yes that’s a hero. But we don’t live in a comic book or fairy tale. Heroism is about everyday people who are helpful, caring, and never cowardly.

What is heroism? Is it a knight in shining armor? A man that has a tragic past and has now stumbled upon powers? Or perhaps the guy who was able to save the whole earth from total destruction? As Arthur Ashe once said, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Heroism is always being willing to help others and disregarding their safety for the safety of others, but heroes are not always the main guy who does gigantic actions.

Heroism functions in this world in very unique ways. There's simple and extreme acts of heroism. There's different types of heroes in this world-the scientist who finds cures for diseases, or the single mom who works all day to feed her children. Community's working together to help people after floods, like the time when New Orleans flooded and everyone helped them recover. They didn't have to help everyone else, but their selflessness and sacrifices helped others. For example, there's firemen who put out tremendous fires, policemen who stop robberies, or people who work for the military risking their life

There are many interpretations of what describes a hero and the actions they take. Whether it's selfless individuals that protect others against harmful entities or powerful figures in costumes that depict moral greatness and power fantasies, everyone has their own vision of what constitutes a hero. Like many of our own thoughts and opinions, these visions often stem from the environment and upbringing of the people that have them. A fantastic example of this aspect of our thoughts is the way George Orwell described a hero. He views a hero as someone who will do whatever they can to change social systems that lack respect for human decency, even if they know it is impossible to create such change.

What is a hero? A hero is not somebody with the ability to fly, run really fast, or control other people's minds,... A hero is a random person that rises to the occasion and performs the action(s) of superhero proportions. “The only use of an obstacle is to be overcome. All that an obstacle does with brave men is, not to frighten them, but to challenge them.” (Woodrow Wilson). I agree with Woodrow that to be truly heroic, one must have leaderships, bravery, intelligence,... to solve common problems in our society. There are many examples of heroes in our modern day world as well as fictional characters. For instances, Odysseus in the Odyssey, Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit and my mom have those characteristics of heroism.

To numerous people a hero is a person with supernatural gifts and great gallantry. It is someone that would save lives and help make the world a better place like Superman for example. A list of these mainstream heroes can extended a mile long, however, that is not the case in reality. Real world heroes are seen much differently from fictional characters. People are labeled heroes based on two words: positive impact.

“A hero is a person who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, displays courage or self-sacrifice for some greater good.” As one reflects on the basic definition of heroes and the idea of heroism, this basic thought may be used. However, one could consider that there is no one universal definition for what a certain person may believe to be heroic. Looking at different people or characters and their lives, there are various defining aspects that make him or her a hero. Specifically examining the heroes throughout The Hobbit, Of Mice and Men, and I Am Malala; one can see how the characters have different characteristics that may make him or her a hero. To really characterize a hero, some traits that are necessary would be bravery and selflessness. A hero is someone who willingly fights for a cause or the greater good that may not directly affect them yet works to a better situation.

Heroism means taking action when you are needed, showing dedication to your quest, and not giving up when all odds are against you. Some people think that heroes are always brave and strong, but they are not. A hero stands for what is right, in times of need and despair. Even through trials, a hero tries to stay on the path. Even when evil tempts them, they look to the light and strive to stay virtuous. A hero is willing to risk their life to save others, sacrifice for other’s needs, and not cave into evil but stand for good.

What a hero/superhero should be? Superman is universally known for his bravery and strength as a superhero. However, how does one differentiate a regular everyday hero from a superhero? According to author Danny Fingeroth, "[a] hero can be said to be someone who rises above his or her fears and limitations to achieve something extraordinary" (14). Similarly as an example, a soldier who storms into a dangerous gunfight with the enemies with all odds against him in the protection his comrades can be classify as heroic.

The word heroism brings to mind different things to different people. This is because people tend to have different concepts of heroism and what it means. The definition of heroism has changed a lot since ancient times and will continue to change. Despite these changes, there are a few things about heroes that will never change. A hero can be described as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Both ancient and modern day heroes are idealized for possessing these traits. Heroes, no matter from what time period, will always be powerful, strong, brave, and valued.

Your lifestyle can affect your thoughts on certain definitions of words. Your background can influence your opinion or thought process heavily. Because who you think is a hero can depend in your situation, this can create for the millions of opinions that everyone has on only one subject at once, not to mention all the other problems in the world that we are forced to reflect on daily, but these things cause for debates to happen due to many people not wanting to agree on but one definition for one word. So, if this is true then I should state my opinion on the definition of heroism, in continuation, I will continue to the examples based on
