Free Imagine witnessing someone who is being arrested for a crime they've committed. The police officer reads the criminal being detained his Miranda rights and then asks the criminal, “What were you thinking when you committed the act?” The criminal responds with,” I’m free, I live in America. Therefore, I can do whatever I want to.” Fortunately, if you live in America- you are free. However, although you are free, you are not given the privilege of running around doing whatever ludicrous acts you please. The Cambridge dictionary defines “freedom” as “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants.” Obviously, in America, the extent of freedom only exists as long as your freedom doesn’t clash with the law, or with the freedom of others. The definition of free changes depending on who you ask. For example, one hundred fifty years ago, an African American might define freedom as “to not be owned.’’ Ask a white male in the same time period and he may reply with “having to do no work what so ever.” Today, the meaning would probably not revolve around having slaves or being owned. Recall the above mentioned scenario with the criminal who violated the law. This criminal now sits in jail where his freedom is all but existent. Prisoners are on a very tight leash with a fixed schedule.This schedule controls who their cellmate is, if they even have one, which foods they are allowed to eat, and even how often and how much they eat. The schedule also controls whether they are allowed to go outside-including the amount of time they are able to be outside. It controls how much television they are able to watch or if they're even allowed to watch television at all. A prisoner is not friends with freedom.
