Humans have tried to answer all types of questions about the world for many millennia, but there is one question which always gets a different answer for every person: What is The Good Life? My definition of The Good Life is to find a passion which is at least somewhat educational and to pursue it while helping the next generation find theirs. This definition assumes a lot of prerequisites. For example, one cannot hope to successfully pursue a passion if they lack the basic necessities of life (e.g. food, water, shelter) or materials needed to pursue that goal (e.g. books, computers). Also, the person must be tenacious and determined to follow their aspirations. There are also many other factors which help maintain The Good Life, such having acquaintances who mutually care about each other and having a supportive society. In particular, the blog Talking Philosophy mentions Aristotle’s Golden Mean, which states that “All things in moderation; nothing to excess”. This is …show more content…
I would imagine doing well on national math competitions during my school year and getting my Masters Degree at a prestigious college. My Good Life would allow me to sleep nine hours everyday, not have to worry about having to cram in an assignment due the next day, devote my time to helping other kids develop their mathematical talents, build something as a side-project, and not worry too much about the future. I would hope for a community which supports education more than they do with luxuries. If I had children, I would try my best to expose to them the art of problem solving and the beauty of certain literature pieces. While it’s too difficult to extrapolate my future, I know that if I continue to attend school and develop my current abilities, I have a better chance of reaching The Good Life. While all this is conjecture, I hope that these beliefs may become an axiom of daily
Everyone in life has their own journey. Life is not based upon one ultimate goal. A good life overall depends on how you live it and what perspective it is in. For a man that does not have a home, his good life could be living in a shelter and being surrounded with people just like him. The woman who just got a promotion and is now celebrating with her fiance. From the little things in life to the “never would have thought this would be happening,” the good life all depends on the person.
The “good life” is one of stability and the failure to be affected by forces and circumstances beyond the control of the individual. This has been clearly stated beginning with Socrates, stating how each life should be lived with self-purpose: no outside influences. The artificial “goods” represent that of wealth, status, and political power, whereas what an individual should cherish is their own personal beliefs and convictions. All items that society has taught a person to hold and respect create more damage and disruption than they benefit as they can easily be taken from oneself. A fortune can be lost, the President will run out of terms, but the moral holding of each person is something that cannot be lost or stripped by a force outside
The concept of living “the good life” means something different for everyone. There is a general understanding that living “the good life” is associated with unyielding happiness and lasting satisfaction. The exact meaning of this desired life was pondered by thinkers and philosophers for hundreds of years. They constructed principals of behavior, thought, and obligation that would categorize a person as “good”. Although some of these ancient philosophies about “the good life” had overlapping ideas, their concepts varied widely. This contrast of ideas can be examined through two major characters in two famous works: Aeneas in “The Aeneid” and Socrates in “The Apology”. Aeneas exemplifies the philosophy that the direct route to “the good life" is through faith, trust in the Gods, and family, while Socrates in “The Apology” emphasizes free will, and vast knowledge of life.
The good life defined by Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics is a feasible goal that all humans should be able to aim for but restrictions make it impossible for all citizens of ancient Greece to achieve it which foreshadows the gender and racial stereotypes that can be seen in our culture today. Aristotle questions this claim by having an inner debate with himself in the process, he creates many theories, but he clarifies what he determines to be the good life by saying, ”Our present discussion does not aim, as our others do, at study; for the purpose of our examination is not to know what virtue is but to become good, since otherwise the inquiry would be of no benefit to us.”(1103b25 ff) It is a misconception that Eudaimonia means happiness
The struggle in finding what the good life is and maximizing its existence can be ameliorated by Capital T-Truth. Capital T-Truth can bide one’s time to reach and enjoy it the good life. “Capital-T Truth is about life before death. It is about making it to 30, or maybe 50, without wanting to shoot yourself in the head” (8). Clearly wanting to shoot one’s self in the head is not the good life and living a life where one has the option to momentarily stick their head in the sand to remain happy is undoubtedly superior than giving into extrinsic
As a child, I grew up in a Christian family where my dad would read to my siblings and me from the Westminster Catechism. The first question from this text asks “What is the chief end of man?” And the matching response is “To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” This seemingly simple answer is something I have taken to heart and strive to live out in my daily life. For me, this looks like spending time in the Word, journaling, talking with friends and people I come into contact with about their lives, and trying to maintain a positive attitude even when things don’t go quite as I had planned. I think glorifying God and truly resting and enjoying His peace and presence is
The term “the good life” can be viewed in different ways. Although, the more powerful meaning regarding the sources would be when others are jealous of your own success. In other words, they can be considered haters. Once you reach this point, you sense accomplishments because it shows you did something with your life. More importantly, “the good life” can be lived well if you’re able to help others while you’re stable and able to treat yourself.
A goal tempted to be achieved by people all over the world is the good life. The idea of endless happiness is pleasing to everyone. Three components found in achieving the good life is an intensive feeling of affection a person feels, when their heart starts racing when they see something they love. Feeling belonged in a society helps a person feel connected and less lonely, and significance to the world and to the people, feeling that one was put on this earth to make a change. In an individual’s life love, status and significance to the world and one another, are the basic components in making the good life achievable.
There are many different interpretations of what the good life truly is. Individualists believe that the good life is pleasing oneself, while utilitarians believe that the good life is acting for the good of the rest of society. Philosophers, too, have their own interpretation. Plato alludes to the philosopher's good life when he uses the phrase "my greatest pleasure." The inherent subjectivity of the word "my" tells the reader that philosophical conversation may not necessarily be everyone's greatest pleasure.
What is the good life? The definition of a good life will vary; but how I can make create my good life is by the happiness I create and what I can see through and find happiness. Life has twists and turn and it is never the same; day- in or day- out. The choice I have made is to accept the good with bad endure all things; but my happiness and the happiness of others is the fundamental goal.
What is the image of a perfect life? If this question was asked to one hundred people you would most likely receive many different answers from different people. The reason for this is because the image of a “perfect life” is one that can easily be changed, one that is dynamic. If everyone wanted the same things from their life then that would mean that all people would be the same. This would mean that all of our minds would have similar interests and beliefs, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Human beings all have varying needs, desires, and interests, so instead of defining a “perfect life” by having specific objects or living in a certain way, the perfect life should be defined by oneself, rather than what other people say.
The “good life” is a way of living that would typically be heralded as the optimum way to live ones life. The way in which the good life is lived, however, along with all the beliefs within that way of living, has been individualized between multiple different philosophers and philosophies. Firstly, John Stuart Mill for example would probably use his age-old argument of saying that the “good life” would be one where you’re happy - but with absolutely no harm caused to others. The early Christian faith belief would be simply: the “good life” is to follow Jesus. The philosophy of stoicism is a belief that the “good life” is to have strong personal traits, and strength of character. Finally, a personal belief is that the “good life” is an essentially insurmountable goal.
The Good Life. A definition that will always slightly change depending on what’s happening in my life, but will always follow the same criteria. The most crucial step will be that I am happy with who I am and the decisions that I’m making. And to follow my relationships will reflect this attitude that I with myself. When I was in high school my dad and I would get breakfast every Sunday morning so my dad could share his words of wisdom. My dad lives in such a way that makes everyone around him want to treat him with respect and therefore he has many healthy relationships with people to accompany that. Now although I’m speaking on the topic of relationships in general, my dad’s opinion on my significant other is extremely
In this paper, I will argue that good life is the free life. As Immanuel Kant once said, “independence from being constrained by another’s choice, insofar as it can coexist with the someone else’s freedom.” I will also argue that the role of the government in helping one live the good life is to protect its citizens as well as to keep the peace.
In today’s world, humans are often misled on what really is a good life. We are constantly shown through the television and magazines that being rich and famous is the way to go when it comes to a good life, when in truth many of them are miserable by problems that usually wouldn’t affect the common person. In truth there are only a few that are rich and famous and do achieve what can probably considered one of the greatest achievement’s by a man which is having a good life. In my opinion, the decision if someone has a good life or not is up to them and their will to strive for something better than average during the high school years of their life. The reason I feel like it begins at that age in their life is
