When somebody asks me a question, I would almost immediately have an answer to it because I think before I speak and I am a very compulsive person. Today, I was asked to write about my favorite word or a word that interests me. I jumped onto my computer and began to type…30 minutes later, I was still on my header. Why was this so hard for me? What word should I use? What if I used a word that made people uncomfortable, like the word moist? What if I used a word that people used to often without meaning like the word love? Then, it dawned on me… What if I used the word, word? The word word means, “a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used with others/ alone to form a sentence.” (Webster’s
The short story “Two Words” by Isabel Allende is a tale about a girl who went by the name of Belisa Crepusculario. She had extreme desire to be the best at selling words, since the first time she saw words in the sports section of the newspaper. Belisa learned to read from a priest for 20 pesos and read the dictionary until she knew it cold. She went from the top of blistering cold mountains to scorching hot coasts selling her words in markets and fairs. Belisa’s words became popular fast and everyone knew who she was. People waited for her from year to year to hear her words.
Most people would believe that we are shaped and defined by our values and moral character. However, Malcolm Gladwell argues, in the chapter “The Power of Context, Bernie Goetz and the Rise and Fall of New York City Crime” In other words, The Power of Context is the social setting and or the environment around you and how it affects your behavior. Anticipating resistance from the reader Gladwell uses rhetorical strategies such as real life examples, controlled experiments and theories to help advance his claim and to help persuade the reader to side with his argument.
“Words I Never Said” is the second single released from Lupe Fiasco’s third album Lasers. This single was released on February 8th, 2011 for online download. “Words I Never Said” is a very informative and somewhat opinionated song. Through his lyrics, Lupe Fiasco is trying to speak out to the people and let them know what is really going on in the world and how they should pay attention because they play a huge part in it. The lyrics refer to multiple socioeconomic and controversial political topics. He talks about the corruption within the world and how we all see it and yet no one speaks out against it. Lupe writes about the war on terror, the media, and the silence in the
This paper will discuss the meanings that some words have for me that may differ from people of a different cultural group. This paper will also characterize what I think democratic, bigot, feminist, conservative and liberal mean by using each word in an illustrative sentence.
What is writing, you may ask? Writing is putting your thoughts into words and putting it on something that people can see. Writing is one of the most important things to a social species, like humans. Writing can be used to save information over the ages for a future generation, spread information to many people, or to make something to entertain others.
Most of the time that results because they are usually the ones you talk to the most so eventually
In Shaped by the Word, by Robert Mulholland Jr., one finds a way to read scripture in order to provide a deeper understanding of God and allow His Word to shape one’s spiritual life. In the Introduction, in chapter 1, the reader is introduced to the idea that there is a movement in the church that seeks to become deeper and stricter in spiritual formation. He claims there are many books written for this purpose, and his intending purpose for this book is for God to use however he may want in the reader’s spiritual life. Mulholland provides the reader with a prayer to pray in preparation of reading this book and states there may be points where God is knocking and calling the reader’s attention to something new.
Dissolved oxygen is oxygen that is trapped in a fluid, such as water. Since many living organism requires oxygen to survive, it is a necessary component of water systems such as streams, lakes and rivers in order to support aquatic life. The dissolved oxygen is measured in units of parts per million (ppm). Examine the data in Table 4 showing the amount of dissolved oxygen present and the number of fish observed in the body of water the sample was taken from; finally, answer the questions below.
To many people, a lie has little significance. Some people tell lies as a way to cover something up, make a different name for themselves, or just to make excuses. No matter what the situation, my father has constantly reminded me that the truth will set you free, and as I get older even though I am still in my youth, the more I realize the truth and importance of that statement. To me a lie is a form of disloyalty, the less you respect the person the more you lie to them as a way to cover up your true identity. A lie is when you mislead what is really the truth; where you don’t tell the full truth in order to deceive someone, or you avoid being honest at all. There are several different outcomes to
Using rhetoric to make an argument has been very crucial to my writing in the past couple of months. From Project 1 to Project 3, I learned to form my sentences using rhetorical strategies to make my argument.
Although there are some actions that many people agree on as to being just, the whole concept of justice is vague. There are no clear cut definitions of what justice actually is or even what it means for a society to be just. There are many different opinions and beliefs, two of which belongs to the philosophers John Rawls and Plato. Rawls’s idea of justice revolves around the two main principles in which he believes how society should run. These two principles, equal rights and the rearrangement of inequalities, ensure that everyone has the free will to do and become who they want without being limitations placed on by society. Plato’s, on the other hand, offers a completely different idea as to what a just society is. According to Plato, justice is a result of a highly structured society, in which each person has a certain role to perform, doing only what they are most suited for. At the top of Plato's society are the guardians, those who renounced personal interests for the sake of knowledge, and their words are justice. Although both Rawls and Plato offer two completely different version of what it means for a society to be just, I ultimately agree with Rawls’s
Word choice, it can elevate the paper, or bring the whole expository down. Rudyard Kipling once said, “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” As a drug can refer to as a positive or a negative item, words can also stand as a positive or negative item. Try not to choose simple words, but do not choose overly complicated big words. The understanding of word choice has changed over the time period of the last week, as students learn that word choice can deeply affect the professionalism of the paper.
Growing up is a journey filled with hardships, some of which will break you down and some that will make you stronger. In Bryce Courtenay’s ‘The Power of One’, a small English boy dubbed Peekay grows up in a series of harsh environments and difficult situations that force him to adapt. Peekay spends the majority of his earlier years in a Boer boarding school, which causes him to be singled out, due to the tensions between the Boers and the English. He is humiliated and physically hurt on a daily basis, most of which occurs at the hands of an older boy, nicknamed the ‘Judge’. As he grows older and progresses through life, Peekay meets different people, such as a pet chicken he names ‘Granpa Chook’, a boxer and train conductor named Hoppie,
Language can fill a story with vivid details and show emotion throughout words. The words we use make our imagination bigger and opens up a new experience. Only words can make us feel connect with other people. How we view words depends on how we think and express ourselves.
Forgiveness by the World English Dictionary is the “act of forgiving; state of being forgiven, disposition or willingness to forgive”. But what does it really mean? That is my question. Is being able to forgive and not forget the same thing? In my life, I have found that true forgiveness is a quality that separates us from other species and it is what makes us human. In order to truly and sincerely forgive, one must, aside from saying they have forgiven the person, let it go and not hold a grudge against that person. Just, as Mahatma Gandhi once said: “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I believe that holds to be true.
