What does success really mean? Although the term success has one fundamental definition; it partakes in many different meanings when being the subject raised in discussion. As children and young adults, we are told to try our best to succeed at our goals and ambitions, no matter how unique or challenging they may be. Growing up in a conventional family, I was raised in no different approach. However, one major failure I faced while growing up was not making the varsity bowling team during my freshman year of high school. I felt like I had let my family down. They ruffled the paper with the names and began to say the names. However, I didn’t have to wait long because I was the first name they called out. I had gotten my spot on the team. I was ecstatic and electrified about their decision. After some of the members who did not make the team left. Coach called all the members to him to discuss who would be the team captain. Given about a minute of discussion on why everyone should be the captain, he looked at me and announced myself as the captain. This was awesome! I had gone one year not even on the team, to becoming the team captain. It was because my hard work and commitment even when I didn’t make the team, the support I showed to them at their games were traits of leadership he told me. I thanked him for his support and encouragement throughout the journey. I could not wait to tell my family about this. I knew they would be so proud of me. However, if it wasn’t for my failure freshman year, then I would have never been motivated to become the best I could be. Every road has its bumps, but they won’t stop you from getting to where you want to be. One great lesson I learned from this is “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.” I will embrace this with me for the rest of my existence. This failure sparked a fire in my eyes to go after what I want. I was not going to let someone tell me what I could and couldn’t do. Not only was I the captain my sophomore year, but I was also the captain my junior and senior year. I had accomplished what my family and I had set out to do. There is no better feeling than making your family proud. After facing adversity and succeeding, you always will come out on the other side stronger than you were
