Definition Of Fear

Fear is a common human emotion, but the way some people react is different than others. Although, it is harder on some humans unlike other people. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said,” Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.” I think that means that fear harms more people than anything else does in the whole world. Also that people can scare themselves way easier than normal and it’s not healthy.

Life can be seen as a continuous story. It has a beginning and an end, and every event has its own impact in the story. Fears can be a result of specific events that made an impact strong enough to cause it. We turn everyday objects, situations, or ideas into fear, but, why? Fear is a natural response, our reflexes are based on what we know, and when something unknown is presented to us our first reaction is to seek for awareness. For example, children tend to have more fears than adults do. Their understanding of things is still developing, therefore, it is too narrow to comprehend some things further than what they can see, as darkness. Adults’ understanding on this is supposed to be fully developed, but yet, a fear as nyctophobia, the fear of the dark, is something that can follow people throughout their whole lives, as stated in “Nyctophobia: From Imagined to Realistic Fears of the Dark” by Joshua Levos and Tammy Lowery Zacchilli,“It may be that the unrealistic fear of the dark that is seen in children might have transformed into a more realistic fear of the dark in adults.” The lack of certainty puts us in an anxious state. Humans have always looked for ways to avoid the dark. From oil lamps to electric light, early humans invented ways so they could see in the darkness, which shows that humans have always been scared of the dark. But the question remains, why are humans afraid of the dark?

Everybody has a different perspective on fear and everybody is affected differently. The Mental Health Foundation stated that, “Fear can last for a short time and then pass but it can also last much longer and stay with us. In some cases it can take over our lives, affecting appetite, sleep, and concentration for long periods of time. Fear stops us from travelling, going to work or school, or even leaving the house.” This quote shows that fear does not affect people as much as it does to others. Although, fear can affect people for a long time which can cause them to stay isolated from others. There are many types of fears and some examples of fears include: the fear of the number 13, the fear of spiders, the fear of heights, and many others. There are hundreds of fears and many people have these fears and everybody is affected differently.

Fear is one of the oldest,strongest, most uncontrollable and an unavoidable feelings. It can: make you sweat, make you cry, shake or even lose your appetite for food. It can also cause people to do stupid things that they never would do in ordinary circumstances. This can be seen in many different aspects of life. One place it can be seen is literature. It can also be seen in movies and t.v. The last place fear is shown is real life.

However, fear can come in many forms and affect people in several different ways. Fear is evident in all areas of life. Everyone experiences fear whether the outcome is positive or negative. Another cause for people having fear is the past experiences they have had. Generally, if something bad has happened to somebody, they try to forget about it and/or they try to make sure it never happens again. However, in doing so, they still have a subconscious fear that something similar to the terrible event they’ve experienced may somehow manage to happen again, especially if there are a few similarities between the past event and the current situation. For example, if a man had surgery for his heart to perform better and he nearly died, he may be very reluctant to ever have surgery to his heart or any other body part(s) again.

Between today’s society, not all people, situations, beliefs, and practices are as black and white as portrayed in years past. There are many elements involved with individuals today that people often don’t take the time out to explore and try to understand. Why? it is mainly because of accumulated fear from the portrayal of certain groups of people on television, newspapers, social media, etc. But what exactly is fear?

Do you enjoy fear?  Fear has been challenging the minds of humans since the beginning of time.  All people can enjoy fear, and highly despise fear as well.  Fear is the nauseating feeling of caused by the belief that something or something is out to harm you.  Fright actually keeps us alive because it keeps our brain active and alert of our surroundings at all times.  Horror is contagious; most of our fear is not caused by us, but instead it is caused by watching other people’s reactions.  The thin line between truth and make-believe are obscured when one is frightened of the unknown.

Have you ever cringe, scream, jump back panic or even ran away form something? If you have then you have experienced fear. Fear is simply things you are scared of . at one point in time everyone has experienced being scared of something weather it was a big or small a small fear, some people fear sharks ,wet grass, mushroom, and even germs like others I have three fears that make me shake with anxiety, panic with fear and scream with terror ,they are carnival rides, horror movies ,and house basements although these fears are small, fears are common and normal to have .

Fear is a feeling induced by experience, perceived danger, or watching a frightening traumatic accident. The fear responses arise from the perception of danger and ultimately a change in behaviour, such as fleeing, or hiding or from perceived traumatic events. Every person has fears and different fears may be different adaptations that have been useful in our evolutionary past. I have fears too, and sometime, I feel embarrassed to intersperse my fear with others.

Fear is a feeling created in a response to a perceived danger. Fear can produce pleasure, heighten awareness, be in the form of phobia, a fear of the unknown and an instinctual response to danger.
