My definition of health is when one feels an overall sensation of healthiness across all 7 aspects of health. A person who focuses independently on each aspect of health, views them as separate entities, and in doing so tries to improve them each individually without thoughts of the other aspects, will rarely ever reach a state of good health. One achieves health through the recognition that all the aspects of health are interconnected and changes in one aspect directly or indirectly influence others and application of this knowledge to their everyday life. At this time in my life, not all 7 dimensions of health are equal to me. As a stressed out first year science student I am personally placing more emphasis on my intellectual/mental health, my emotional health, and my occupational health. My ambition to learn and achieve high grades has left me in a position where I find I often neglect my physical health, social health, environmental health, and spiritual health by isolating …show more content…
Considering that these are only two of the seven aspects of health, and that one should be healthy in all seven aspects to be considered truly healthy, this statement is false. An example of someone who is unhealthy yet looks fine and is not in pain would perhaps be someone who is unsatisfied with their career and has taken to isolating themselves from their family, friends, and coworkers; while they appear physically fit and possibly even in good mental health, they are not healthy occupationally or socially and if they stay in this situation long enough, they might begin to see the negative effects of this unhealthiness in other aspects of their
Health is not limited to a physical illness that can be cured or alleviated but must encompass the entire individual. It includes spiritual, emotional, social, mental and physical aspects of the individual. All of these areas must be assessed and evaluated when caring or a patient and their families (Chitty, 2007, p. 303).
Naidoo and Wills(2001, p.47) “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ - WHO (1946).” This definition falls into a holistic way of defining health, which believes that there are more areas to look at when thinking of health than just simply the absence of a disease. It considers the cause of why someone is ill and not just simply about ’fixing it’.
The definition of health is the state of being free from illness and injury, it can also be used to explain a person’s mental or physical condition.
But over the past few decades, the definititon and concept of health has evolved to encompass more elements than just the physical well-being of a person. This is partly attributed to various researches and studies that have taken place around the world in the last 60 years. Already in 1948, the World Health Organization declared that health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not
The definition of health is fluid, ever changing and carries different meanings across individuals, societies and cultures. Although it is difficult
By looking at what different people say about health, it is clear that each one look at it differently. Therefore, there are many ways to define health. When we look at health, all physical, intellectual, emotional and social aspects should be considered because they all affect our health equally. Health can be defined in many ways, positively, negatively and holistically. It depends on how the individuals look at their health and how concerned they are about it. Our state of healthiness will depend on many things such as where do we live, what job do we do, what do we eat, who are our friends and everything else related to our lifestyle. Our choice about our lifestyle can make a difference to our health. If we are interested enough in ourselves, we can improve our own health. Some people think, that it depends only on the health care we obtain; however, it doesn't only depend on this. It is connected to our lifestyle as well.
With there being such a plethora of cultures in the world, there are so many different beliefs and practices involving health and wellness, that almost everyone has a different definition of health, and different views on disease and illness in general. My definition of health involves many different aspects, but most importantly living a healthy lifestyle overall; being free from illness, and doing everything possible to stay that way. Eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting plenty of sleep along with protecting your
My personal definition of health encompasses the holistic viewpoint that is health is the multidimensional aspect of wellness in mind, body, and spirit. The definition disputes the medical model of health which focuses on illness as oppose to wellness (Shi and Singh, 2015). Derision is a byproduct of my background in the social sciences and starting my career in the trenches of working with those with very limited means.
‘Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ (World Health Organisation, 2011) This definition was first cited by the International health conference in July 1946, and the definition has remained the same. Health is a way of life which is reflected
I consider health as a state of wellness. With this, I bear in mind that each person’s idea of wellness may differ from the next. For example, a diabetic may consider his diabetes being under control and healthy when his
(WHO, 1948) describes health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease of infirmity’? There are other dimensions of health such as physical health, mental health and emotional health which can be broken down and looked at individually.
Health: Orem (2010) stated,” health is a state of physical, mental, and social well- being and not only the absence of disease of infirmity” (p.184). Basically, patient/person is considering healthy when his or her is functionally and structurally whole or sound. It is a state of wholeness, and it is the responsibility of a society to supports health promotion and health maintenance. It is a result of physiological and psychosocial mechanism working together in relation to
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines Health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. ~World Health Organization, 1948
The medical definition of health is: the state of being whole and free from physical and mental disease or pain, so that all the parts of the body carry on their proper function". This is a negative definition where health is defined as to be free from pain and discomfort. (Critchley, 1978, p.784).
