For my senior project I have explored the career of a Dental Hygienist, who is a licensed dental professional who is registered with a dental care association within their country of practice. Their duty is to clean teeth, examine patients for signs and symptoms of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventive dental care. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral cavity health. Dental hygienist occupation has many important aspects to their job, which makes it a very rewarding occupation. According to my research dental hygienists is one of the top career choices in America, being so, over the years the career has evolved into a high demanding occupation.

In life, choosing is never easy. Choosing what to wear, eat, where to go, and how to live. Choosing what you want to do for the rest of your life, is as easy as walking to the moon and back. There is no brochure that gives you a sure set of bullet points as to what you would like to do, instead, we are meant to simply discover what we would enjoy doing most. There are over a million different careers, yet I’ve chosen a profession in Dental Hygiene. Believe it or not, my first words were not in fact, “I want to become a dental hygienist”.

There is nothing glamorous about putting on scrubs everyday but it is beautiful to be an integral part of a patient taking an interest in their health. The oral cavity is intricately associated with the rest of the body and a fundamental, but often forgotten part of overall health. As a dental hygienist I have the opportunity to educate and help people improve or maintain their periodontal health. I would like to transfer because I have a huge desire to educate future registered dental hygienists and by continuing my education I will be equipping myself to be a stronger leader and mentor for students. Being a dental hygienist was not the career I grew up believing I would pursue. At a young age, up to my Junior year in high school, I had my goals set on being a veterinarian. Going into high school I widened that plan into any job dealing with animal science. However, taking classes like zoology, botany, equine science, veterinary technology and advanced animal science, made me realize that I would not have as much direct contact or personal connections with the animals as I had hoped. However I found that being a dental hygienist gives me the opportunity to have that direct contact and personal connections with my patients.

My educational goal is to get accepted into the dental hygiene program at South Florida State College. Furthermore, get accepted into the program, I will need to get straight A’s and rack up as many hours as possible in a dental office. At DeSoto County High School, there is no club or class to prepare me for dental hygiene school. After I obtain my degree in dental hygiene, I plan on working at a dental office, in addition, do community service by cleaning teeth for people that can't afford it. For example, the homeless community and group homes.

There are many jobs around the world to choose from. The three jobs that I choose were a Border Patrol Agent, Dental Hygienist, and an American Navy Nurse. The jobs that I picked either one or two have something in common with each other. For example the American Navy Nurse and a Border Patrol Agent share something in common and so does the Dental Hygiene with the Navy Nurse. All these jobs inter me and it’s hard to choose for only one.

As a college student, it is important to research different professions in order to determine what career path to ultimately follow. Certainly, there are many types of jobs to take account of, and as a person with plenty of passions, finding a major has proved to be quite difficult. Nevertheless, the time has come to decide a career pathway and currently I am pursuing to become a registered dental hygienist. This career path is far from my art passions, but the search for a good occupation, and a feel-good job has brought me to the dental hygiene career path. In order to research this occupation even further, I will interview a dental hygienist and find out if this is the right career path for me.

Theoretically, it takes ten thousand hours of deliberate practice to become an expert in any field. I intend on not only dedicating approximately nine hours a day for the three years, that I hope to spend at Newcastle University, but the rest of my working life in the dental industry. I have researched and shadowed a dental hygienist therapist and I firmly believe they are an invaluable asset to the dental care team. I would thrive from the independence and clinical freedom to work, within the scope of practice, on a one to one level with patients. I believe I can make a difference, particularly building the confidence of sporadic and nervous attendees adhering to a holistic and preventative approach.

Becoming a dental hygienist involves the game stage substantially. In the game stage, we begin to understand that the people around us have responsibilities of their own and demands placed upon them as well, the world does not revolve solely around the individual. In patient care, it is important for us as the dental hygienist to be aware that our patients may feel as though they do not have time to brush or floss their teeth. Instead of just placing judgement on them the dental hygienist needs to look at the situation from the patient’s point of view and should empathize and work with the patient to come to a solution. The game stage is likely why we also say keep your home life and your work life separate, this being, if you are fighting

Dental hygienist focuses on oral health. They clean the patient’s teeth, tell them how they can improve their oral health, and tell the patient about any oral disease that they have or can possibly happen from poor oral hygiene. To become a Dental Hygienist you have to graduate from an accredited dental hygiene program and have a license in the state they have practiced. It takes 2-6 years to become a Dental Hygienist, they make an average salary of $55.307 annually. The dental hygienist work in many places such as: private dental practice, community health centers, hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, practice clinics, schools and state/federal government services.

My dream job is to be a dental hygienist and has been the same since I was a little girl. I have an interest in how health can affect one’s body. I would like to educate others how important it is to keep your body, including teeth, healthy and clean. To see people who have not cleaned their teeth in years compared to people who are able to see the dentist every six months, is a drastic difference. Some people may think it does not matter, but lack of dental care actually takes a toll on your health. I want to peruse this career to help other’s think. I will enjoy helping other people by showing them the importance of keeping their teeth cleaned. Contrary to popular belief, a tooth brush does not do all the work, that is also why it is so important to have a dentist to make sure you are getting the cleaning you need to stay healthy. Another reason why I want to pursue this career is I work best in an oriented atmosphere. Making sure people are comfortable with where they are and make sure the patients are taken care of. Creates a very friendly environment. That is why my passion is a dental hygienist.

After marriage, I had moved to California. There I wrote NBDE Part 1&2. Then we had to move to India and later Vancouver, Canada. According to healthcare regulation of Canada, I couldn't work as a Certified Dental assistant because it is a long procedure to get the certification and licensure. Initially, It was tough to get an observership in Vancouver but with patience and perseverance, I got this opportunity of shadowing an amazing dentist. Here I am shadowing Dr. Basant Abdel Rahman during different clinical procedures like Implant placement surgery, Implant crown restoration, RCT, extraction of the impacted tooth, restoration, veneer and other dental procedures.
