The life of a teen who is struggling with depression is just an ordinary thing for most people. The atmosphere surrounding teens are slowly spreading through the air. The story is being told through the mind of Elena to Dora, who is suffering from depression. Schumacher reveals the devastating effects of depression on an individual and her family through the eyes of Elena, the sister of the depressed. The nature of this mental illness, its unpredictability, the mental and emotional strain on the sufferer and family, and the irreversible damage that can result is displayed in The Black Box. The author was influenced by the lack of awareness for depression. For example, “The article talks about the author's background and friends who have …show more content…
The following example helps clarify that fact, “The important thing is that you always stood by her. You couldn’t fix everything for her, and you couldn’t see inside her hear, but she knows you love her. Right? You’re probably already writing her secret messages.”(Jimmy, 149). The example as stated before helps to clarify the theme as well as showing how the family member/friends are doing to help them throughout their internal struggle. This solidifies the statement by displaying the sister as the light in Dora’s darkest hour, but refuses to acknowledge that fact and pushes her away fearing she may drag her down. This example displays the effect it has on the mother of the victim, “I remember Jimmy’s mother being a little unusual. I don’t want to talk about this anymore, I’m going upstairs.”(40). This example displays the attitude the mother has any criticism provided by anyone that is not Dora's psychiatrist. The fact she avoided accepting advice from others who are experienced in the matter is simply due to her maternal instincts, assuming she knows what is best for her …show more content…
For example, “A drowning person doesn’t rescue herself.” “Good point, which is why it’s important for your sister and for everyone else that she learns how to swim.”(116). This part of the books explains why it is not always a good idea to help someone who is depressed, due to the unpredictability and requires the family/friends to leave them to figure it out for themselves. This, as stated previously helps shine a light on the fact the victims of depression need to figure out how to rely on themselves instead of everyone else. Another good example, “When teenagers reach the point of not wanting to do anything or start to think about suicide, then they are more likely to recognize that there is a problem with their mood.” (Wagner). This states how the mood of the victim of depression can change within a blink of an eye. The example puts the unpredictability of depressed individuals into the light, as many do seek suicide because of their mood swings. This example provides an insight into their emotions, “Teenagers often do not recognize the symptoms of depression or might not use the term “depression” to describe their mood.”(Wagner). This example elaborates the fact that depressed victims are oblivious to their own emotions. The depressed become more unpredictable due to the fact they are completely oblivious to the fact they are depressed and
“She never thinks anybody is good enough for anything” (Tan 183). She explains how her mother criticizes everything. There are many events that happen within the book that show the negative side of the relationship. On the contrary, there are many events within the book that show the positive side of the relationships between the mothers and their daughters.
Next in importance, a person suffering from depression will often times feel that everything they do is inconsequential, and that life itself is purposeless. Countless tend to feel incredibly lonely, but find it burdensome accepting people into their life and discussing with them what they are going through. They want to be left alone, but at the same time do not want to be lonely frequently. Society portrays depression as someone being sad all the time or wearing all black, but it is much more than that. Depression is constantly fighting a battle against oneself, day and night, feeling numb and usually misunderstood by those around you because depression is viewed by society as a choice, not as a mental illness. Majority of individuals who go through depression say they feel as if they are trapped in a dark hole, trying to climb their way out, but as soon as they almost reach the top, they fall back again, and the cycle repeats itself. Thus, many tend to give up in life. They struggle going through it daily, tending to lose interest in everything and leaving them feeling helpless. In the same way, the slaves relates to them

Depression is a common theme throughout all writing, and it can relate to other major themes such as unhappiness. “Someone behind me also stepping on stones, leaves: if I slow down, he slows down; if I run, he runs. I turn: nobody” in the poem “The Street” by Octavio Paz, the character is expecting
Depression is something serious that ruins the lives of many. In “The Depressed Person” by David Foster Wallace, he introduces the reader to a person who suffers from depression but also is narcissistic; someone who hungers for attention and makes and situation about them. There’s a difference in depression alone and depression that is accompanied by narcissism. Being sad and keeping to yourself is symptomatic of depression, but being sad accompanied by the need to blame others as well as having a grandiose view of one’s self would be more representative of depression with narcissism. This combination brings an unhealthy lifestyle and burdens ones around the sufferer. The Depressed Person may not reach out
Elena holds onto the hope that her family can be the same again only if she can “save” Dora from herself. Elena displays grown up thoughts and ideas however the child in her prevents the maturing process to be complete. Elena must realize that her focus should not be on protecting Dora and getting her family back as it was. Instead she is obliged to want the best for her sister’s health and well-being. Elena’s therapist and friends advise against this plan, that this fight is for Dora alone.

A majority of people associate the root of depression with mental or emotional trauma, but they do not realize that in a large amount of cases depression is the result of a preventable problem outside of the brain. In The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy, multiple characters have to confront depression. John Poteete, an overweight freshman cadet at the Institute, and Annie Kate Gervais, a southern girl with an undesired pregnancy, exhibit all the signs of depression throughout the novel to the point of attempting or committing suicide. Even though they are facing events that are mentally and emotionally distressing, that is not the only reason they are suffering. Depression is not solely caused by psychological circumstances, but can be traced
Though the theme of depression is more literally touched on in the show, it is hard to deny its presence in the short story despite its subtleness and the fact it is masked with happiness.
For instance a loss of a loved one or a break up. In this paper one will be talking about the symptoms of the disorder. Lady Macbeth will show one how her depression has affected her and how it affected her life and how it made her kill herself.
Victims can learn all the signs and recognize the severity. In any case, Depression should be treated like a disease. Internally, Valerie dealt with so much. She wanted to make friends but was too anxious. She wanted to be loved but needed self-love.
Depression is a serious medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often is unable to live in a normal way. It brings together a variety of physical and psychological symptoms which together constitute a syndrome. At least 10% of people in the U.S. will experience major depressive disorder at some point in their lives. Twice as many women as men experience major depression and is known as the common cold among psychological disorders. Like the common cold, there are many types of depression.

The aunt, with her offer of allowing Sofia to take over as the storyteller, is introducing an opportunity to advance Sofia’s cognitive development. Although the viewer may not be aware of the show’s educational lesson/s, the interaction between Sofia and her aunt follow Lev Vygotsky’s Sociocultural theory. The aunt, (with social speech) explains the purpose of the library to Sofia (p. 236). And then, the aunt explains to Sofia her intent to give control of the library to her because she thinks Sofia is ready for the task—an example of her aunt assessing Sofia’s zone of proximal development (Cook & Cook, 237-238). Finally, her aunt mediates for Sofia when Sofia asks for help in completing her first story. Examples of mediation include support through scaffolding (e.g., the aunt’s help in leading Sofia to the kingdom where the Pegasus is held and aiding her to escape from the stable). (Cook & Cook,
People that didn’t reach their goals may blame society and its issues for their failure and unhappiness, even for their debt. However, some people lack success because they gave up to easily, and settled for what was most convenient instead of working hard for what was most beneficial. Having to sit back and watch everyone around you succeed can lead to depression and enable a person to discourage themselves and even attempt to sabotage the lives of people who achieved all they wanted in life. “For them life becomes a continuous ground hog day of limited and unsatisfying experiences” (Henry). Ground Hog Day was a movie that portrayed a world where the man changes but the world stays the same, but in depression, a man stays the same continuously as the world changes around him and so he ends up envious and angry, resulting in a bitter life. The individual not only gives up on himself, but his negative attitude stimulates people to give up on
