Describe Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is the process of rationally analyzing and attempting to solve a problem accurately without guessing. The first step in critical thinking is to understand the problem thoroughly which will allow you to restate the problem in different ways to learn about it and other related issues and where to look for possible solutions.

Over the last thirty years, the health care system has incurred dramatic changes, resulting in new advances in technology and medical theories. Greater demand for quality care by consumers, more knowledgeable patients, remarkable disease processes, shorter hospitalizations, and the continuing pressure to lower health care costs are all contributing factors in the necessary changes to the nursing practice. 1. My current situation with work isn't that great. I told my boss that I have school and that is my main focus this fall. They really want me to work so they can get things done. The problem is they are going to give me the crappy jobs that nobody wants. Why would I go back when I would be given the crappy jobs to do? I currently have enough money to cover my schooling costs. It bothers me that they can't hire someone else. It's almost like they expect me to come back and work.

Critical thinking’s meaning to me is a very well-disciplined thinking process of an individual who skillfully, analyzing and evaluating. A process from information gathered from information given to an individual. It also is coming from communication, observations and past experiences that the individual has experienced from the past. Critical thinking allows you to think and ask yourself the right questions so that you can reach the best conclusion.

Critical thinking involves evaluating and analyzing data in order to form a reasonable judgment about a particular topic or idea. It is not simply believing a subject matter because someone in authority or expertise said it, but challenging those arguments in order to form a well thought out conclusion. A critical thinker will normally not accept an answer without reasoning; they require evidence to validate or prove their conclusion. The ability to reason logically is a fundamental and disciplined skill that can be learned over time.

Critical thinking is not something that is foreign to our brain. We use critical thinking every single day, even if we don’t know it. Critical thinking usually involves a process of breaking down information in order to get a desired result.

The concept of critical thinking in my eyes basically means thinking outside the box! In other words, means to think about the topic or situation in another way then what the specific reason should be. I think we all think outside the box and we think that a certain situation should be done another way. For example, I work in the claims department for life insurance and I code a lot of different reasons for cause of death. When I look at a death certificate there are multiple reasons to why the insured has passed away from but I need to be specific on the cause of death. I have to think outside the box about the main reason why the insured passed away from what illness and then start coding it from the different causes they have had listed

Do you ever think to yourself, “This can’t be worth it. Is what I’m doing right? Can this affect others in a negative way, and hurt people I don’t want to hurt?” When you do this, You’re thinking, and not just the kind of thinking you normally. What you’re really doing is critically thinking. You’re thinking about your decision and how it might hurt others, and what it will do for you in the future. When you critically think, it can help you make decisions from where to eat, up to huge and important decision that could last you a lifetime.

"Don't judge a book by its cover". Many of us must have heard this saying, but only a few understand its true meaning. In fact, Judgment is not simply a random process but it is a more complex procedure revolving mainly around critical thinking. Critical thinking is all about asking questions that help to assess meaning or the significance of claims and arguments. Building these skills and applying them in a life makes it easy to assess evidence, evaluate arguments and stimulate intelligent thinking. Consequently, the person will stay activated and engaged in different situations. Critical thinking involves stepping back from the situation to take a view of all the angles before making any judgment or taking decisions.

The similarities I found in the definitions of critical thinking from the websites were that critical thinking explores alternative ways of thinking about something with the purpose of uncovering untold meaning. It delves into the deep layers of meaning and tries to formulate a better and holistic understanding. People should not settle with obvious and the taken for granted. They should question assumptions and ideas rather than only accepting them. They should make correct decisions independently.

Critical thinking can be defined as analyzing and evaluating information with a view to improve it, and making more effective decisions. Critical thinking is asking questions on the information and analyzing the answers to find the logic and applying it to real life situations. Critical thinking moves us past just the description and into scientific interference and reasoning. (The conversation, June 19, 2013).

Critical thinking means accurate thinking in the search of appropriate and dependable knowledge about the world. Another way to describe it is sensible, insightful, responsible, and skillful thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe or do. Critical thinking is not being able to process information well enough to know to stop for red lights or whether you established the right change at the supermarket.
