The geography behind Gatsby and the backdrop of it makes Gatsby more able to understand what is happening in the story. There are two sides of the lake, The East egg and the West egg. The East egg is where the people that had money passed down from generation to generation and the people didn’t really do much in life to get at that point because they just had money given to them from old family members. This is where Tom and Daisy live.
The West egg is there the people that worked there butts off to get money and a nice life. This is the people that had a poor childhood or a middle class childhood would work to have a life and nice things. This is where Gatsby and Nick live.
West Egg is where new wealth is and it means that the person who has all this money acquired it by hard work. Gatsby lives in West Egg and he spends a lot of money on parties but he does it to impress Daisy, Tom’s wife. He does it all hoping to find Daisy again knowing that she lives in East Egg. While Tom only uses his money to please himself. The personalities of the two are very different. Tom is arrogant, aggressive, dominant, and unfaithful while Gatsby is restless, delusional, innocent and mysterious. Tom only cares about himself and here’s a quote to support that claim “Not even the effeminate swank of his riding clothes could hide the enormous power of that body”. Gatsby is a man who wished he was old wealth but really is
Getting to where one is and life depends on what class one is born in. For instance, if one is born in old money they are not only born in a generation a great deal of wealth but they are also born with a high degree of respect. Meaning they will grow up in a world where money is handed to them and it is used to solve the majority of their problems. On the other hand, people who are born in new money are not born rich or with respect. They grow up earning their income and respect. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, East Egg is considered to be old money. Tom Buchanan and Daisy Buchanan are living in East Egg. Meanwhile, West Egg is considered to be new money. Gatsby and Nick Carraway are living in West Egg. Nick is a character who lives in a smaller house, next to Gatsbys mansion “I lived at West Egg, the – well, the least fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizzare and not a little sinister contrast between them.” (1.10) Nick is explaining that both West egg and East Egg are high class areas in New York but West Egg is not as high class or fashionable as East Egg is. Nick enjoyed his time in his small house located in West Egg, as he helped Gatsby reunite with his true love. Daisy Buchanan is a young woman who lives in Eastlake with her fiancé Tom Buchanan. She is one who enjoys materialistic objects rather than the person themselves in a relationship. Gatsby is aware of this information so he illegally bootlegs alcohol during the Prohibition time period as The novel takes place in the 1900s. With the money he earns, he pie is a big mansion right across from
Throughout The Great Gatsby, various locations are introduced that correlate to specific types of inhabitants. The geography of the novel is primarily comprised of four scenes: East Egg, West Egg, the valley of the ashes, and New York City. Although all of the localities are situated in the East, Nick muses at the end of the novel that the story is, in actuality, “of the West” (Fitzgerald 176). This discovery insinuates that the materialisms of the East besmirched the characters of the West, symbolizing the deteriorating effects the quest for riches has on traditional values. Employing the four major settings, Fitzgerald is able to translate the moral and social corruption of society which dramatically contrasts with the conventional
The Great Gatsby takes place in New York during the Roaring Twenties, also referred to as the Jazz Age. There were two formations of lands, West Egg, which was where the narrator, Nick, lived and East Egg, the more fashionable and luxurious land on the other side of the coast. Gatsby threw these extravagant and lavish parties at his mansion, hoping to reconnect with his soulmate Daisy. The women would
In The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway moves from Chicago to the West Egg of New York. He settles in as Jay Gatsby’s neighbor and starts a new chapter of his life. Nick is related to Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom, who live in the East Egg. After his summer in New York and after all the tragic events that happen, Nick realizes that maybe this isn’t for him and now he has the knowledge that he needed to realize that he is a 30 year old man and his youth is past him. He had come to the conclusion that maybe it is time for him to leave and try starting over, and maybe, it would be best to start over in the Middle West, where he came from. People can teach you some valuable lesson in life, pay attention to those and learn from their mistakes.
The East Egg and West Egg are symbolic of the effects of wealth and the corruption of values. The West Egg is the home of the newly rich, like Gatsby, and those like him who have made huge fortunes, but lack the traditions associated with old wealthy families. The West Egg made up of families like the Buchanans, have a tradition of money, have grown up with money and have never had to work for anything
The West Egg housed the less fashionable of Long Island, where hard work was the reason for their lap of luxury. The East Egg housed the rich by inheritance. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald West Egg accommodated Jay Gatsby, whose home was an imitation of Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, Gatsby’s mansion included a tower on one side, a thin beard of ivy over the, a marble swimming pool, and over 40 acres of lawn. How is it possible to earn such a large sum of money? The majority of Gatsby’s money was made from selling liquor, which was illegal at the time. Nick Carraway on the other hand, was not living the same lavish lifestyle as Gatsby was. Nick’s own home was an eyesore, for he was not as wealthy, he worked as bond man, living in a cardboard bungalow for $80.00 a month. The East Egg included the Buchanan family, Tom, and Daisy, and temporarily a friend, Jordan Baker. Both Buchanan’s had inherited their millions from family, however their wealth had not kept their marriage strong. Tom had a mistress, Myrtle Wilson, in New York City, and Daisy was in love with
To begin with, Gatsby’s desire to rekindle the flame between his dearest Daisy and himself causes a series of awful decisions to arise. For instance, after Mr. Carraway attends the grand party that Jay Gatsby was throwing, it comes to his attention the reason why the affluent man was living in West Egg instead of the elite East Egg. That reason being that“Gatsby bought [the] house so that Daisy would
The Game is just like many other different Hidden Object games; your number one goal is to find all of the objects that are need to complete the level. One of them was to make drinks when you were at Tom and Daisy’s house, and another was to fix a tire when at George Wilson Garage. One thing that was interesting when playing this
F. Scott Fitzgerald has a distinctive attribute to his writing that stands out. As an author, something that he does exceptionally well is use imagery and setting as an approach to add greater aspects to his writing pieces. This is shown very suitably in possibly his most famous novel, The Great Gatsby. In this novel especially, Fitzgerald uses the setting and imagery to not only deepen the visualization for readers, but also to add to the storyline, while at the same time helping to distinguish classes in society and in addition, giving greater significance to characters. Imagery is defined as a literary device that adds visual description or figurative language and visual symbolism.
In the novel The Great Gatsby there are many themes relating to the geographical location in which the story takes place. These themes relate to the social class of the individual that inhabits the space. The divide between the physically of the land show the divide of class. East Egg represents old or inherited money, that comes with an elevated status. West Egg represents new money, that the person would have made themselves.
The settings and backdrops in The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, are essential elements to the formation of the characters, symbolic imagery and the overall plot development. Fitzgerald uses East and West Egg communities to portray two separate worlds and two classes of people that are technically the same their status, but fundamentally different in their ideals. The physical geography of the settings is representative of the distance between classes of the East and West Eggers. Every setting connotes a different tone and enhances the imagery of story line. From the wealthy class of the "eggs", the desolate "valley of ashes", to the chaos of Manhattan. The imagery provided by Fitzgerald becomes an important
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the setting of New York in the nineteen twenties performs an extensive role in the novel. Although the nineteen twenties are a time of economic prosperity, they appear to be a time of corruption and crime as well. In New York, particularly, the nineteen twenties are a time of corruption and moral scarcity. The setting is during the Jazz Age as well, where popularity, fashion, and commerce are a primary inclination. The setting of The Great Gatsby efficaciously portrays the behavior of the characters in The Great Gatsby, as well as the plot and development. The setting assiduously delineates how themes, motifs, and symbols can fluctuate in relation to the time or location. The setting of The
The Great Gatsby begins when the narrator, Nick Carraway, and established the context and setting of the novel. The narrator, Nick Carraway begins to explain his own situation. Nick Carraway moved from the Midwest to West Egg, a town on Long Island, New York. The novel is set in the years of WWI and begins in 1922. Nick served in the army in WWI, and he decided to move east and try to become a bond trader on Wall Street. He is a graduated from Yale and grew up in a wealthy family. Nick has rented a small house that rang between many large mansions. His house neighbors one of the main character named Jay Gatsby. Nick is invited to Daisy and Toms for dinner. He discovered that Tom, Daisy's husband, is still aggressive and assertive as he was
Like East Egg and West Egg, they are both modern and uprising communities of New York. East Egg is where Daisy and Tom live. A place where people that are well educated, have a high status stay. Their origins have also come from the lavish and rich inheritance of American society. This is what is known as ‘Old Money’ people, the kind that defiance the poor. West Egg, is where Nick caraway and Gatsby lives. They are also wealthy people, but with a different background. Jay Gatsby is uneducated, but a rising newcomer in the fireball of wealth. As a comparison to the East Eggers, the west side lacks the polish standards of choice. Although Gatsby is kind hearted in the inside, he will always be an outsider to the high class. Because it wasn’t meant to be, it was a miracle from the roots of where he is from. One of the many themes from this book is presented in the movie from the angles of East Egg and West
