Enlightened, enlightened with all the food that surrounds me and how I have the freedom to eat anything I want, whenever I want. All I see is food ranging from colorful breakfast cereals to gluten-free blueberry bread, tofu wraps, Hawaiian pizza, vanilla ice cream and healthy green salads. I am honestly overwhelmed to see so many food options crammed into one dining hall. The so-called “Freshman 15” will probably hit me hard due to consuming all of this food offered to me. I went from eating homemade enchiladas soaked in red California pepper sauce, topped off with freshly cut lettuce and radishes to consuming greasy pizza and ice-cream at any given time of the day.
Trading off my mother’s homemade food for dining hall food is a tough transition not only on myself in terms of leaving my comfort zone but it will also have its effects on my body. My body has been used to eating my mom’s home cooked meals for the past 18 years that it really doesn’t my body in terms of gaining weight or getting sick; for the first time ever, I will be not be consuming healthy home cooked meals that are made with love anytime soon. Home cooked meals included quesadillas full of melting Monterrey Jack that stretched so far apart when I’d open the flour tortilla in order for it to cool off and soon home cooked meals will probably turn into me making myself some Kraft mac n’ cheese at late night hours.
