Basketball is a team sport where a ball is dribbled between opponents and is passing around through teammates to eventually throw or shoot the ball with their hands in the 10 feet raised basket on the respective opponents side of the court. All of these clock rules are in the game to make it faster, more entertaining and harder/easier to play the
Basketball started in 1891. It has now grown into one of the most popular sports in history. Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Canadian James W. Naismith. An instructor at the YMCA Training School in Massachusetts, he sought a suitable indoor game to keep his students fit and warm during the cold New England winters. With wire mesh backboards. He formulated 13 rules, most of which still apply today. In 1893, the first women’s game was played at the Smith College, in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA. And soon to spread all over the world.
Did you know basketball has been around for almost 85 years? Many people from all around the world play basketball. It is played with a ball from a variety of sizes and with a hoop from many different heights. As my alarm clock startled me from sweet dreams, I grinned realizing game day had come upon us. I leapt out of bed in excitement as I skipped to the bathroom. I filled the bathroom with “Today’s Hits” on Pandora, sprang in the shower, and danced while scrubbing my hair. After showering, I brushed my teeth, gave the mirror a cheesy smile, and headed to my room. I slipped into my Crestwood Girls Basketball long sleeve and a pair of jeans. I combed through my hair and decided to let it air dry. I gulped down my breakfast in three bites, grabbed my book bag, and zoomed out the door. After an exhilarating start to the day, I anticipated tonight’s basketball game would bring more delight to that wonderful day.
Basketball is a game that millions of people love to watch or play. The game of basketball has been around since 1921. Ever since then the game has evolved dramatically. From beach baskets and soccer balls to glass backboards to leather/rubber balls. As the game has changed people have evaluated the game of basketball. Since I was little, I have been evaluating how basketball works. Everyone is different and may see or judge basketball in another way.
I can recall this day unquestionably. It was a bright summer day, the trees looked taller and the daily breeze was magnificent. I had just woken up from a nap, when I received a text message from my basketball coach. It read, “Hey girls, let’s get together and go hoop at the rec today.” I read the message and I was amped with excitement. It had been months since I had actually played basketball with all girls. I missed it so much.
I’ve always loved the game of basketball. The way it gets people sitting on the edge of their seats, the pressure on the court, the anxiety on the bench, the frantic coaches. But never have I experienced such an intensity of that of the Norrix vs. Central game. We are in the locker room, whooping and hollering, with 20 minutes to tip-off. I’m so excited to get on the court and hear the deafening cheers of the crowd. As I pull my jersey over my head, Haleigh approaches me.
In life everyone has an aspiration in something in which they wish to accomplish until they are unable to do it anymore. Mine happens to be the amazing sport of basketball. Overall, basketball has been playing a key role in my life throughout my high school years: summer, fall and the intense grind of winter practices. I love it, all the way down to the chilling, dreadful ice baths. Therefore, I play hundreds of basketball games throughout my years for for west high school, for my game it’s to the the absolute best I can for my team. In all the games I played for my many coaches at West I can’t illustrate everything that goes through my mind on the court.
To some people basketball is a hobby. To others it's a sport that they enjoy playing. To me, it's my life. I play ball before, during, and after school. If you can't find me, there's a pretty good chance I'm out with some friends playing a pickup game. As a sophomore in high school, I already have numerous colleges interested in me like Butler and Louisville, and it will only go up from there
In an arena full of people with no room for error, the pressure was on and I was not planning on disappointing my supporters today. In a gym full of anxious gymnasts, a once in a lifetime event was about to occur. I was 11 years old; I had a large support group which consisted of my family, my teammates, and my coaches, and I was ready to take on my first regional gymnastics competition. The event lasted all day, and I learned that with hard work and dedication I can achieve anything.
Thick mounds of snow line the streets and a thin layer of ice after all the plows pushed away the snow. My father and I were driving thru the highway trying to get to my game. The game was at Ramapo College which was 35 min from my house to there with all the detours. As we pulled into the parking lot there was luckily a pretty clean parking spot for us and as we got out we realized that we were very far from the court that I played in, luckily for us there were security guards who were cleaning the snow paced parking driving around and stopped us asking if we needed a lift. We thanked them and went into the basketball courts, thankfully I was just in time for my game, and it was about to start.
Basketball, the sport where there are five players of each team on the court. The point of the game is you try to make the basketball, which bounces and Is round in the round basket on each side of the court. When I was five my parents said ok time to stop playing basketball, but leave your basketball stuff on and get your basketball shoes on because I was playing basketball downstairs. They surprised me and took me to the gym and when I got there my parents said it’s basketball practice. All I heard was squeaky shoes and smelt a stinky gym some of my best friends were in there and i was ready to play basketball. When i got home my parents asked if it was fun and i said yeah. They said do you want to play a longer time and i said yeah again.
If I were to meet anyone in the world, it would be the greatest player to ever play the game of basketball. A real close decision between meeting LeBron James and Michael Jordan. So, I chose the G.O.A.T. Michael Jordan. He is such an inspiration to many people, whether those people were alive or not born when he was in the league. Michael is a really nice guy too.
I used to put on my basketball shoes, and worry, about getting injured, or doing badly on the court. I would get stomach cramps, before each game. I always worried about how bad I would cramp up, or how miserably I would mess up during each game. You could say that this was my biggest “Achilles Heel.”
I walked into the high school gym 15 minutes before it started. I was ready to kill it. I could already smell the fresh new volleyballs for the upcoming season. It was the last day of junior varsity volleyball tryouts. “Hi Amber!” exclaimed Taylor, the junior varsity coach. I waved, sat down, and got my shoes and kneepads on. There were many upperclassmen in the gym ready to make the team they had all made the previous year. Honestly, it was pretty intimidating being a freshman surrounded by all of these amazing players. But, I knew I’d be okay because I spent my entire offseason preparing and working in order to make the team I’d wanted to play on during my freshman year.
It was a chilly September morning as the volleyball team piled onto the bus and headed to the preseason tournament in Hoisington. Two hours later, we entered the building and began preparing for our first game. We flew past our first two opponents, beating them easily. Next, we played Hillsboro. Returning from the state tournament the year before, they had a solid team. Alex Ratzlaff was their star player. She was an excellent receiver, phenomenal hitter, and had one of the best jump serves I had ever seen. The University of Nebraska had recruited her to play for them next season.
