Descriptive Memory

Everyone has their first memory when they have to enter the adult world, mine just happened to be my junior year of high school. This year was just a little glimpse of what was going to be the rest of my life. Getting my first job was bitter sweet. I had to learn how to manage my time between school, sports, and now a job. After my first week of school I had to start my new job.

Many times, we have memories that we would like to forget, such as an unpleasant or traumatic experience. My memory of my first internship was something that I always tried to forget, along with a lot of other negative experiences in my life. However, now that almost two years have passed, and after reflecting on it time and time again, I began to reclassify that memory as a learning experience rather than a negative experience. In life, we are faced with many obstacles, sometimes on a daily basis. Our society values stories of overcoming life’s obstacles because they are inspiring, interesting and may lead to personal growth.

The human mind never wants to recall negative memories. We do not want to remember that time when we were giving a speech in front of a class and we tripped on our words. We never want to remember that time when we were walking through the hallway and suddenly fell over our own feet with our books flying all over the floor. We do not want to remember that time when we were at war and our best friend lost his life, but we got to keep ours. But what we do recall is the moments we arose heroic and overcame an obstacle.

Memories can last a life time, so we tend to only remember the extraordinary ones. Extraordinary like the essay “The Yellow Ribbon” by Pete Hamill, in which he talks about how a person named Vingo, was riding on a, bus recently released from jail, to this oak tree explaining to some passengers that he had told his wife to leave him if she wanted, since he went to jail or to go to this oak tree and tie a yellow ribbon around it to see if she wants him to stick around and he will go and check it out. In the end, he saw hundreds of ribbons tied on to the tree. Not only is this an amazing story, but also very unforgettable one as well, because he finds out that after four years in jail his wife has enough love for him to go to this tree and tie hundreds of ribbons just to show the type of love the women had for Vingo. I have to say that, I believe this story is truly unforgettable, but I also got a story that is very extraordinary, like the time that I got my very first car. Furthermore, I didn’t just get a car, I got the love of two truly loving parents.

In sum, we can conclude that eyewitness memory still hold important place in investigation and prosecution process yet it is flawed. Based on research that I reviewed in this paper, there are several aspects that important to enhance eyewitness memory such as the repetition and precision-accuracy trade off. In contrast there are some factors that can threatens quality of memory such as such as avoiding co-witness situation, less focus on the confidence level to measure accuracy and delayed effect. These factors need to be prioritize to create a better environment to recall accurate information.

In this paper I will revisit Russon’s definition of memory, and three of the aspects that he presents as important in the memory process. I will also argue that our body play an important role for our remembering, as does the objects we interact with. As well as present my position on Russon description of memory demonstrating that Russon’s description is indeed relatable to the actual human experience.

Memories: they can cause us grief, bring us joy, or make us regret the choices we made. There are some memories that we hold close our hearts, so strong not even oceans can wash them away. The memories we hold all remain the same, even when everyone else changes. One thing is true; memories are best when you make them.

This experiment was designed in order to explore whether false memories generated by the fear conditioning technique could generate an observable active fear response through conditioned place-avoidance (CPA).

It records and uses an inner voice to repeatedly replay them. This might bugging them so that they could remind of what they were working on.

From his working memory it takes in and outputs to his, declarative memory, and prospective memory which are short-term memory and long-term memory (Friedenberg & Silverman, 2012, p.112-117). For the robber, his declarative memory is part of short-term memory and long-term memory because he is given facts and declarations and with the time being he rehearses them well enough that they become long-term memory (Friedenberg & Silverman, 2012, p.113&117). Basically, he rehearses facts and events in short-term memory which leads it to being more active and having a lower chance of decaying. Thus, with this method of rehearsing, eventually the information stays in the robber’s mind for a longer period of time (Friedenberg & Silverman, 2012, p.113&116). Robber’s prospective memory contains his goals and desires that he wants to fulfil by achieving the money from the bank (Li and Laird, 2013, p.155). Prospective memory deals with future predictions and having a dream to achieve them (Li and Laird, 2013, p.155). Similarly, prospective memory is part of short-term memory and long-term memory because just like for his declarative memory, he is able to rehearse well enough his goals and desires by preventing them from decaying, which will stay longer in the robber’s mind (Friedenberg & Silverman, 2012, p.113&116).

On Thursday, March 2nd, 2017 our class had welcomed a guest speaker for our adulthood and aging course. Our guest speaker, Dr. Parks, had spent a considerable amount of time teaching our class about different dimensions and aspects of memory. Although, the class learned a wide array of information; Dr. Parks notable amount of our time presenting information on prospective memory. The term prospective memory can be defined as “memory to perform future actions without specific reminders.” After learning about perspective memory the class had learned additional information about two different types of perspective memory. The first type of perspective memory is event based PM (completed when a cue present); and the other is time based PM (completed at specific time).

The two concepts that I resonated with are Memory and the Psychodynamic theory. Starting with the Psychodynamic theory is an approach to psychology that studies the psychological forces underlying human behavior, feelings, and emotions, and how they may relate to early childhood experience. This theory is most closely associated with the work of Sigmund Freud, and with psychoanalysis, a type of psychotherapy that attempts to explore the patient’s unconscious thoughts and emotions so that the person is better able to understand him or herself. The second one is Memory; understanding how memory works will help you improves your memory. Which is an essential key to attaining knowledge. Memory is one of the important cognitive processes. Memory involves remembering and forgetting. I chose the two concepts because throughout the class they stood out to the most. Understanding the conscious, subconscious mind and also memory. I’m interested in understanding the human behavior.

As Sousa (2017) states, “Learning is the process by which we acquire new knowledge and skills; memory is the process by which we retain the knowledge and skills for the future” (p. 86, 87). A person has the ability to learn many things throughout his/her lifetime. Research states that a person can store unlimited amounts of information in forms of memory. Declarative and non-declarative are two different types of memory that people use to learn and grasp new concepts. Both of these types of memory are used in order for a person to gain knowledge, develop habits, and build muscle memory.
