A. Ethnocentrism - The use of one’s own culture as a yardstick for judging the ways of other individuals or societies, generally leading to a negative evaluation of their values, norms, and behaviors.
Dharavi is the largest slum in the country of India. It is home to an estimated one million people, who all live within one square mile of its confines. This is approximately half the size of Central Park located in New York City, New York. Dharavi has one of the greatest population densities in the world. It is said to be six times greater than Manhattan, New York City. This fact ties into ethnocentrism because people who live outside of that society do not understand how someone would live in Dharavi by choice. For example, when

There is only one toilet for 1400 residents, electricity is illegal, and fifteen families share only one tap that works for merely two hours in the day. Taking someone who is accustomed to living in a developed society and placing him/her in Dharavi to live, culture shock is almost guaranteed to occur. Westernized culture has made it essential to have electricity, accessible running and clean water, and in many cases, to even have a simple telephone. The people of Dharavi do not have these things. The things that other cultures see as fundamental are almost non-existent in Dharavi. In American culture, it is almost impossible to find someone without a cell phone. To leave that same person to live in a slum without any electricity or to work in unsanitary conditions would be considered inhumane. In America, the citizens take for granted having a bathroom with a door for privacy, but in Dharavi, one toilet is shared by too many to count. That alone would make someone from a westernized country look down there nose at this culture. In cultures where people hate to wait in line to use a public restroom, Dharavi would be deemed as an unfit place to live. Imagine it to be illegal to have electricity here in the United States, how many people would be unlawful citizens? When considering everything that the US citizens use for survival on the daily basis, almost everyone would be engaging in illegal activity. From
Ethnocentrism is defined by our tendency to judge other groups or cultures based upon our own standards establishing
Ethnocentrism is the belief in the superiority of one’s own group. It’s a universal habit that ethnocentric individuals tend to compare and judge other cultural practices to be inferior. Ethnocentrism encourages the solidarity in groups; it creates the feeling of belonging and drives the individuals to build pride in the group. However, ethnocentrism hinders the understanding of the cooperation with other groups. With the sense of superiority, there is little incentive to interact with the inferior groups. While making generalization about the culture and customs of others, ethnocentric individuals aren’t being aware that they tend to make false assumptions regarding the cultural differences. Furthermore, extreme ethnocentrism is likely to
Ethnocentrism is defined as the tendency to judge other people and cultures by the standards of one’s own culture and to believe that the behavior, customs, norms, values and other characteristics of one’s own group are natural, valid, and correct while those of other’s are unnatural, invalid and incorrect. For example, in Funny in Farsi Firoozeh experiences ethnocentrism from citizens here
Any person that would judge somebody on their cultural standards or traditions is guilty of ethnocentrism. When people are guilty of this they believe that what they’ve learned is right is the most superior and what other people and cultures do is completely abnormal and weird. On the other hand cultural relativism is quite opposite; it is the belief that all cultures are equally valid and no culture is more superior then another when comparing them.
When the settlers invaded the Indian’s homeland, they weren’t happy about it. They were very angry. Some were forced out of their homeland, and others decided to stay because they were afraid to leave. The people who stayed were put into reservations. Reservations still exist today; it is land that is reserved for Indians under a treaty or an agreement. The Indians didn’t want to be put into reservations, but they had no other option but to agree with the government. I looked into the reservations and they still exist today. The Indian Country Today states that there is a housing crisis in Indian country. Despite the Indian Housing Authority's (IHAs) recent efforts, the need for adequate housing on reservations remains acute. I think that it is horrible what they’re going through after all of these years, you would think that they’re living conditions would have gotten better, but sadly it hasn’t improved.
Social integration /pg. 10: The degree to which members of a group or a society feel united by shared values and other social bonds; also known as social cohesion. Dharavi is known as a tight knit community. Everyone knows everyone and they are all very close. This place is very cramped, confined and overpopulated so everyone becomes close to one another. The people are all pretty happy and there is a sense of community and social life. Everything that these people do, they try to do alone with little help, or as a whole unit. Everyone is either a friend, family or neighbor. In the documentary, someone said that when a new person comes to Dharavi, everyone helps out by giving a helping hand and welcomes them with open arms. When someone comes to Dharavi they don’t have a home or a job and until they do people help them with a place to sleep and food. The people of Dharavi are said to be very happy people. Though they live in poverty and don’t have much, they make the most of life and they keep their spirits high. Even though they don’t have much or anything at all they live life to the fullest. I think that is very important for people in their situation to do. They all support each other and they work together and help each other out. Since Dharavi is a close-knit community, there is low crime rates and children can feel safe while out
The government also promises to the poor, better schools and hospitals. Balram’s father died because there was improper medical care in their home town, and the life expectancy in India is only 66.8 years. There are nearly 1,189,172,906 people in India and only 61% of the people living in India are literate. In New Delhi, though, the government does fulfill its promises to the rich. They live unaware and uncaring of the slums surrounding their middle class lives. The government makes promises of better livelihoods to its people that are never fulfilled; causing India’s poor to remain in the slums and the government to have little understanding of the problems poor people face.
Ethnocentrism:(late 15th century). Individuals judge other groups relative to their own based on langue behavior customs and religion. When the Spaniards came to the new worlds they saw that the natives were more advanced in agriculture. The natives also had a different customs and languages. Ethnocentrism, or the idea of it, placed natives in forced labor and segregated them based on their customs.
Poverty and oppression is a serious condition that is prevalent even in today’s modern society. Women and children are exposed to poverty and subjected to a life of injustice. One of the countries where such problems still occur is in India. Despite the country’s modernization, there lies an undercity where the disparity of wealth is transparent. These social problems are thoroughly described in movies and literature such as Slumdog Millionaire and Behind the Beautiful Forevers. In the book Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Catherine Boo, the author describes slum life for a set of individuals and the hardship that their social conditions confined them to. Another movie that gave insight to slum life in India is Slumdog Millionaire
People who are ethnocentric are judging other on the basis of their own culture, especially for language, behavior, customs, and religion.
A concept that has helped me to understand the social world is ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism is defined as the attitude that one 's own culture is the best and others are inferior. On the micro level, it is now clear to me that I have demonstrated ethnocentrism in my dealings with individuals and this might account for some of the problems that have come about in individual friendships. On the macro level, ethnocentrism has helped me to understand why world peace is so elusive.
We must first understand the two distinct theories regarding perception of outside cultures: Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism. Ethnocentrism is judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one's own culture.[1] The ethnocentric individual will judge other groups relative to his or her own particular ethnic group or culture, especially with concern to language, behavior, customs, and religion - these ethnic distinctions and subdivisions serve to define each ethnicity’s unique cultural identity.[2] The logical alternative to ethnocentrism is Cultural relativism, the practice of judging a
Ethnocentrism and cultural relativism are two contrasting terms that are displayed by different people all over the world. Simply put, ethnocentrism is defined as “judging other groups from the perspective of one’s own cultural point of view.” Cultural relativism, on the other hand, is defined as “the view that all beliefs are equally valid and that truth itself is relative, depending on the situation, environment, and individual.” Each of these ideas has found its way into the minds of people worldwide. The difficult part is attempting to understand why an individual portrays one or the other. It is a question that anthropologists have been asking themselves for years.
One must also beware of ethnocentrism, or a belief in the superiority of one 's own culture. Individuals who are ethnocentric frequently demonstrate disregard for other cultures.
Thai Buddhist temple is the most well known spot to surrender stray dogs, since they have a ton of remains. If the temple dogs get along, then stray dog and stray. Other normal spots incorporate disconnected streets or even outside somebody's fence.
