Page 25: This question makes me wonder if melinda is talking about Botched the TV show where people get plastic surgery. I have always wondered what it feel liked to get botched. Do you feel like a new person, or better version of yourself? I know when someone is depressed they don’t feel like himself, they mostly feel like a bag a skin with no life source. I wonder if this is what melinda feels like, lifeless. It must be miserable, finding no happiness. I would never be able to live life like that, I wonder how the people who are miserable live. Page 161: This question makes me wonder why Melinda’s rapist keeps agonizing her. It’s sick that he feels no remorse to what he did, he almost seem like a sociopath. I wonder if Andy (the rapist) told
Opening Statement: “Life is short and insecurities are a waste of time.” Why is plastic surgery considered wrong? I believe that if people feel insecure and have the money. It should be acceptable not only for adults but teens as well. If I was a mother to a child that felt complete insecure about him or her self of course I would consider plastic surgery. However, it should be a realistic surgery for example rhinoplasty (nose job). Therefore, as they get older yes it is their own decision to make other improvements to their appearance. What you have to see is the positive side that plastic surgery brings out of people in the world. Plastic surgery helps you by building self-esteem, by increasing opportunities, and by improving mental health.
The beauty standard is a culturally constructed notion of physical attractiveness that has become increasingly imperative for women and men. However, this standard has become extremely perilous to men and women’s self-image. Camille Paglia, a highly educated individual who earned her PhD at Yale University and became a highly acclaimed author, explicates this conception in her essay “The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery”. Paglia suggests that the beauty standard idealizes women to look like “sex symbols with an unattainable grandeur” (776). She continues to claim that it forces her audience of higher class women to pay large sums of money in order to alter their features ultimately conforming to a very “parochial” definition of beauty (776). Although Paglia is a highly credible source, she illogically appeals to the reader’s fears in order to persuade them. Paglia fails to give any credible outside sources which affirms her preposterous beliefs. Contrary to her inconsistencies, Daniel Akst, a social journalist and graduate from New York University provides his audience with reputable sources in order to persuade his audience. Daniel Akst believes that there needs to be a “democratization of physical beauty” in which instead of attempting to alter the beauty standard, we must first change how we view ourselves. Akst provides credible sources to establish his credibility where he observes cases studies and cultural experiments from scientists and organizations including:
These modern day people feel the need to try and fit into the western culture, even Asian American, so desperate they are willing to go under a knife to fit into the mold. For example, in the New York Time, author Patricia Marx highlighted, “Many dispute the notion that Korean plastic surgery today emulates a Western aesthetic, pointing out, for example, that big eyes are universally considered appealing and that pale skin connotes affluence.” This is essential because western culture have a major impact on the Asian American community that brought the changes in cosmetic surgery to Korea influences the change among Asian to transform into “American” literally. Having blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, shaving down their jaw lines just to name a few Asian American is doing this cosmetic surgery to become what Asian American community considered being a true American. Because within today society, everyone wants to fit it, and for Asian American to accomplish the western culture would be reconstructing their features to becoming a Western American so they can blend into American society.
In todays hectic, fast paced society, many American look forward to coming home and relaxing in front of the Television. Throughout the years, television has introduced many different genres to the viewers. Reality television has been one of those expansions. Many American refer to it as their guilty pleasure. Deep down they know the message it’s prompting is questionable. Take real housewives of Atlanta for instance. The show is about 6 housewives who are supposed to display the day to day of upper class housewives. The show does everything except that. Instead they place these false images into viewers head by promoting the key to happiness is in plastic surgery, money and fame. Wanting viewer to believe their contentment is coming from those

In today’s society we constantly see people not accepting the imperfections in themselves and others around them. It’s good to always look for ways to improve yourself but if you take it to a superficial route it can become a severe problem. Plastic surgery is an example of some form of cosmetic ‘improvement’ that can become a severe problem. Plastic surgeries used for cosmetics take place all over the world and it is not strictly limited to wealthier countries. A luxury such as this may be thought of being taken upon by mostly wealthier people, but Brazil is an example of a poorer country that has many plastic surgery operations. Having only a GDP of 11,208.08 USD (gross domestic product) per capita as of 2013, it is home to 13% of all plastic surgeries performed in the world. Compared to wealthier countries, such as Luxembourg, which has a GDP of 110,697.03 USD which only has 8% of total adults in the country having partaken in some form of plastic surgery. So we see people regardless of wealth going to great lengths to fix their imperfections.
Elizabeth Haiken, "The Making of the Modern Face: Cosmetic Surgery," Social Research, Spring 2000. The American culture that produced cosmetic surgery is the increasingly visual, psychologically influenced culture of the twentieth century United States. For those surgeons who perform cosmetic surgery, the relationship between the physical face and the construction of individual identity has always been and continues to be central. "In our modern twentieth century United States, our attitudes toward cosmetic surgery have been based on a series of assumptions: that inside every person who looks different is an American struggling to get out; that inside every homely girl a confident girl is trying to emerge..." These surgeons,
The media puts forth a plethora of information to the general public. Appearance is a major idea in society that is constantly put out on mainstream media. The image of seemingly perfect celebrities and stars are heavily rotated, and have lasting effects on millions of Americans who are unhappy with their body image. Plastic surgery has become common amongst middle class women, and a rapid increase in male plastic surgery has been noted in recent years. Constant exposure to the “perfect” body image in the media puts harm in the very idea that the human body comes in all shapes and sizes. Despite the temptations of a perfect body and plastic surgery to fix imperfections, it is completely possible to maintain a positive sense of self while facing standards and expectations that are nearly impossible to obtain.
Today’s society puts too much emphasis on a woman’s appearance. The media portrays celebrities and models as goddesses, setting the bar for is considered beauty unrealistically high. Almost every picture in a magazine has been edited to fix “imperfections” as well as the Movies that star beautiful starlets have also been edited or have a touch of animation to make the actress or actor more appealing. Women often try to model themselves after their good looks by buying the same beauty products, getting the same haircut, or even going to the extreme of getting plastic surgery that can cause serious complications or even death. Plastic surgery procedures are painful and gruesome, no woman should be have to feel the pressure to
The subject of plastic surgery in America is still a taboo since it attributes to the idea of being ‘unnatural’ and a ‘plastic monster’. Most popular surgeries in the country include eye lifts, liposuction, and breast enlargements. Those who have gotten these procedures are likely to keep what they have had done in order to not be shamed by others who may not support artificially changing one’s appearance. Many people may know that South Korea is known as the plastic surgery capital of the world. Plastic surgery was once a major taboo in Korea, where those who have gotten it done would be looked down upon on by family and friends and be ostracized by society, but now the pursuit of perfection has made cosmetic surgery much more popular and open to the public. About one in five women in Korea would have some kind of plastic surgery done, and many neighborhoods and subway stations are lined with advertisements and billboards to promote clinics by showing before and after photos (Graham, “Popular Surgery Shrouded in Shame“). In my experience of living in South Korea for a few months, I did notice that there were many cosmetic surgery advertisements in certain districts of Seoul. In those areas, I would typically see women’s faces all bandaged up from those procedures that got done and they wouldn’t care if people judged.
Cosmetic surgery has become one of the most popular trends in America today. Whether you are reading a magazine, watching the news, or a television program, you are likely to see something about cosmetic surgery. Within the past year, there have been several television programs dedicated to people “bettering” themselves through body augmenting surgeries. Millions of people undergo risky surgery every year simply to improve or enhance a feature or body part. While the results may seem foolproof and glamorous, it is actually a very risky procedure.
According to the article “Is cosmetic surgery worth the risk?” by Rebecca Ganzak ,she discusses the disadvantage and advantage of teenager having plastic surgery. First, the article mention that some people would spend $10.000 on a nose job and they will take a second job or take a loan so they could have money to do surgery. Second, they see more teenagers willing to do plastic surgery the before, that mean the number are increasing. Third, the author states that if a parents get into a situation where they daughter tells them they want to have plastic surgery on their body, parents should inform them that appearance isn’t everything in life. In the article I will talk about the reason why teenagers
Plastic surgery keeps increasing like daily activity that has been done in society. Even it does not matter for some people after they know their relatives or friends have done with it. These are most common reasons from the above statement:
The first career that interested me was plastic surgery. Plastic surgery deals with the repair, reconstruction, or replacement of physical defects of form or function involving the skin, musculoskeletal system, cranio and maxillofacial structures, hand, extremities, breast and trunk, and external genitalia” Plastic surgery is divided into two different categories cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic plastic surgery is focused on enhancing people’s appearance. Improving aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportion are the key goals. Cosmetic surgery can be performed on all areas of the head, neck, and body. Because the treated areas function properly, cosmetic surgery is elective. Cosmetic surgery is practiced by doctors from
