What is Multiculturalism? Multiculturalism is the presence of distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society. Multiculturalism plays a big part in teenagers as well as adults life’s. For example the two tv shows The Brady Bunch and Modern Family have different cultural lenses and cultures causing them to view multiculturalism as well as diversity in different perspectives.

Acts of violence are detrimental when regarding its effects on human emotion. When exposed to too much violence, a person’s perception on society and even themselves begins to be altered. Nevertheless, just as violence can be disadvantageous to people, it can also be seen as an advantage as it causes citizens to realize that change needs to occur. In “Great to Watch,” the author, Maggie Nelson, discusses how society, especially Americans, have become desensitized to violence. Nelson also goes into depth to explain how society has become accustomed to violence due to the fact that people are exposed to it on a daily basis. In addition, Beth Loffreda discusses and explains the effects that a violent hate crime had on the town of Laramie, Wyoming

Pluralism is a state in which racial and ethnic categories, though distinct, have equal social standing. (Macionis, 2012 pg.84) So in stating what it is we are looking to foster gives us a better idea of what to expect if we do foster a climate of acceptance and cultural pluralism in the United States. Though to get there we need to teach, I mean really teach each other and about one another in every way form what we eat to how we celebrate traditions. We need to get everyone involved as much as possible, which means in schools, jobs, and community. By doing all of this we will have a better understanding of one another which well level out the minorities with the majorities and make acceptance easier all around.

“Pluralism is the granting of equal support, acceptance, or influence in decision-making to more than one religious group” (Segal and Oxtoby). Secretary Kerry is, in my opinion, a religious pluralist. I believe this because throughout his speech, he spoke about his efforts to understand all types of religions, united religions by talking about their common fundamentals, and called others to build relationships with people of all types of religions in an effort to create a community of peace and acceptance.

Pluralism is the freedom of having many faiths accepted, while post pluralism is in a sense the new faiths that come about after time of taking in and observing other distinct religious practices and adding to one’s belief in order to shape something new and different. The author may feel that America has a oneness of religion because it seems as if even though there is no exact way everyone views and expresses religion it all still manages to come around to the same basic concept of looking up to a higher power and following a certain procedure or rituals to reach out to that higher power and express ones culture or religion. I personally have got in the routine of giving thanks every day, and in a way at times I do feel there is an oneness

Today in America you can see that we are a pluralist nation by simply observing the diversity of beliefs and practice. However, within our society there are some religions that come with extreme stereotypes in certain situations, such as Islam. Ever since the tragedy of the Twin Towers on 9/11 stereotypes have gotten more extreme and spread around at an accelerated rate. “Pluralism is not a birthright in America; it’s a responsibility . . . People have fought for pluralism. “ (Patel 28). Patel had the right idea because tolerance is learned and due to the aftermath of 9/11 Americans are still unjustly wary of Muslims.

The Dalai Lama once said, “Major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness… the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives” (Huffington Post). This quote by the Dalai Lama speaks to the issues of pluralism and interfaith understanding. Pluralism is used to describe the diversity of different cultures and how they actively interact with one another. It engages the differences between cultures to obtain a deeper, more profound understanding of each other’s beliefs. To engage in pluralism means to equally support, accept and participate in the decisions of various religious groups as well as placing a positive value on faith and practice. In pluralism, all religious practices are considered beneficial as long as they follow the laws of the state and do not harm individuals within the community.

The Hero’s Journey is a theme I was somewhat familiar with prior to viewing the video. Although I haven’t actually read most of them many of my favorite films are from literary works. Many of them were named in the video. I was able to recognize the similar themes in The Wizard of Oz, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and Harry Potter.

Pluralism can be distinguished by two different types: cultural and structural. Cultural pluralism exists when groups have not acculturated and each maintains its own identity. In the videos sports journalist David Zirin spoke about a common myth that sports and politics don’t mix. Zirin likes to point out that sports and politics are so imbedded into each other that we as fans don’t even notice. Sports seem to contradict themselves when there are constant militarism and patriotic acts being taken place at sporting events. Zirin pointed out military appreciation games where those in attendance had the chance to enlist at the game as a place where sports and politics mix. Zirin also speaks about how taking part in the game is often compared to war. The video had a football player speaking about the game he had just played saying it was a war and the other players were out to kill him and he was a soldier. By using these terms in a sports world, fans are exposed to a glamorized war and political terms. This becomes a form of

Pluralism is a worldview in which the society members structure their culture based on acceptance and diversity. These common traits all strive for the common good of all and also realize there is some truth in other beliefs (Pluralism, 2015). This worldview stresses the importance of tolerance of other religions but does not however deviate from their own beliefs.

Throughout his presentation, Hans Rosling shows that the rich and wealthy release the most carbon emissions, but they are often the ones telling Africa or another developing country they shouldn't begin using fossil fuels and other technology because it's hurting the environment. Rosling claims that the rich end look down at the "poor" people and say, "You cannot live like us, you will destroy the planet." Technology, however, is key to progressing out of poverty and developing. As shown in his graphs, the wealthy release the most emissions, but shake their finger at developing countries that are starting to use technology and/or burn fossil fuels. An example used in the video is Africa and the coal available to them to provide warmth and light.

Multiculturalism is also known as ethnic diversity relating to communities containing multiple cultures. The term is used in two different broad ways, descriptively and normatively. By using the descriptive term, we usually refer to the simple fact of cultural diversity. This can be applied to the demographic make-up of a specific place and sometimes at the organizational level such as schools, neighborhoods or nations. The normative term is often referred to ideologies or politics that promote this diversity or its institutionalization.
