“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely, or unhappy is to go outside... Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be”(Anne Frank). In the story, “Diary of a Young Girl”, by Anne Frank, Anne is a young Jewish girl who has to flee into hiding during the Holocaust and writes in her diary about what goes on. At the beginning Anne is sociable, but as the war progresses she becomes lonely. Therefore I believe that loneliness can change a person. When Anne first arrives at the annexe, she’s open to others and tells her family what she’s been thinking about. At the beginning of the book Anne says “I went upstairs and visited the Van Daans. I do so occasionally to have a chat”(Frank, pg.29). This is an example of her being open to others because she’s reaching out to the Van Daans to get to know them better. Anne was also not very fond of Mrs. Van Daan. She thought of her as rude and insulting and told her family what she thought about her. An example is when she says “I get nothing but blow ups from her for my continuous chatter. She is always pestering us in some way or another”(Frank, pg.27). She says that “older people formed their opinion about everything and don’t waver before they act. It’s twice as hard for us young ones to hold our ground, and maintain our opinions, in a time when all ideals are being shattered and destroyed, when people are showing their worst side, and do not know whether to believe in truth and right and God”(Frank, pg.263). This is an example of her being lonely because she’s afraid of her ideas being wrong or dumb and then being judged for them. So as a result she tends to keep her thoughts to herself.
