2.2 Theoretical Orientation
2.2.1 Children Literature
Children's literature has been used a lot as a useful and critical material in teaching reading. According to Rebecca (2010) Children’s Literature as a concept is defined as literature exclusively about children. Children's literature refers mainly to stories, poetry, rhymes, folk tales, drama, exclusively created for children such as infants, toddlers and the young people as target audience. But to look deeper, because children’s experiences, knowledge and interests are limited, their literature differs from adult but only in “degree” not in kind. Children's literature is a rich resource for vocabulary development that can be the strong fundamental for EFL learner to acquire functional English. For decades, research

The reader applies many strategies to reconstruct the meaning that the author is assumed to have intended. The reader does this by comparing information in the text to his or her background knowledge and prior experience” Stated Mikulecky in 2008
Teaching reading is one of the critical parts of teaching language. Through reading, the teacher role is to guide student how to comprehend written language so that the student can get the idea and share their thought to other easily. Byrnes (1998) stated that reading is an interactive process that goes on between the reader and the text, resulting in comprehension. The text presents letters, words, sentences, and paragraphs that encode meaning. The reader uses knowledge, skills, and strategies to determine what that meaning is. Before teaching reading, it is necessary for teacher to meet some requirements mentioned before. Teacher also has to be completely understood and choose the effective method and technique as well as preparing the decent reading material. Whilst also considering the student who has English as a foreign language and student’s language
First, Separating Children’s Literature from adult literature is an important stage to suit the child thought, to enrich his language development skills. A literature directed to the child, which has a distinctive
“The more you read, the more things you know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” This is how Dr. Seuss thought of reading, and I think of it in much the same way. Literacy is everywhere and influences us every day, therefore, it plays a major part in each of our lives. I believe that reading is an interactive activity in which learning happens, or as Clay (2001) defines it, “…a message-getting, problem-solving activity” (p. 1). Reading is the process through which one reads information and from doing so, constructs meaning about the material. The more exposure and practice one has with reading, the more knowledge one gains. In this paper, I will begin by discussing my own personal educational philosophy, then continue by stating and explaining four of my beliefs about the reading process and the research that is found to support each of them before sharing the remaining questions I have about literacy. I am an existentialist, and a strong supporter of a balanced literacy approach. My beliefs about literacy come from these foundations and perspectives that I embrace. For students to be successful in their literacy development, I believe that identity acceptance in the classroom is crucial, instruction for all students must be differentiated, direct and explicit instruction is at times necessary, and vocabulary is a significant component in the ‘Big Five’ of children’s literacy development.
It has been shown that if students start at an early age to learn to read and write their learning in all content areas will improve. It is for this reason it is important for secondary teachers to understand early reading acquisition as to incorporate those reading skills in lesson to accommodate students with reading deficiencies. Educators can understand the building blocks of how a student learns and develops into a successful reader in order to help them develop their reading skills. If teachers understand reading acquisition they can better assess their students’ reading level. As such, the role of professional judgement in understanding the selection of reading or writing material is to know their students reading needs and select materials
Literature is at the heart of the Australia English Curriculum and is integral to the teaching of language and literacy. Discuss how the children’s literature can be used to develop an understanding of the components of the language?
However, new language learners most face some difficult and boredom in reading, so teachers should try to give students books that can attract students interest and curiosity. Reading stories and novels can create great interest and suspense that ELL student’s need. Through my reading to this book ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’ I strongly recommend it as one of these books that can benefit ELS students. According to Krashen (1993) reading is an effective way to increasing and improving improve spelling, grammar, and writing for ELL students, especially reading for pleasure. Krashen also said that students who read for pleasure have better reading comprehension, writing style, and increasing vocabulary. The author also emphasized that the best way to develop Vocabulary is through real encounters words within context (Krashen,
Children’s literature is an effective teaching tool for children but also a way for children to escape their daily lives through fantasy. Didactic material can be used to teach life lessons, manners and morals where subversive and fantasy genres can allow children to release from daily expectations and allows an outlet for their large imaginations.
As time goes on the familiarity with reading and writing is essential for an individual to better themselves in life, for the world we live in is a place for competition between every human to succeed. The value of literacy is not only for high-end people but anybody that want to gain knowledge. As one gains knowledge through literacy, it can extend toward one achieving their goals or achievements in life. The strategies when going over a reading assignment is a significant part of what one is trying to comprehend the text.
In advanced classes, books are used to help demonstrate and reiterate what has been taught. A Critical Handbook of Children’s Literature by Rebecca J. Lukens, Jacquelin J. Smith, and Cynthia Miller Coffel is a great utensil in digging deeper into the world of writing. One of the main goals of the Lukens text is to give readers a more in depth understanding of what exactly makes a written piece quality literature.
Children’s literature is defined many different ways. It can be simply defined as a book that a child reads, or as Kiefer defined it “as the imaginative shaping of life and thought into the forms and structures of language.” (Kiefer, 2010, p.5) Literature has been around for hundreds of years, although not in the form that we are used to seeing now. There have always been stories to be told for as long as one can remember.
* Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning about key events, ideas and information in texts that they listen to, view and read by drawing on growing knowledge of context, text structures and language features (ACELY1660), (ACARA, 2012). Learning to read is essentially learning to decode and understand the words/language written in the story and to construct meanings from those words (literacy) (Nicole & Roberts, 1993). The more language the children (and adults) hear and read the more developed their vocabulary will become (Snow, Burns & Griffin, 1998, Nicole & Roberts, 1993, Anderson et al, 1985). Reading fluency is enhanced with an enlarged
“The more you read, the more things you know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go” –Dr. Seuss. Dr.Seuss could not be any more right. It is often said that once you find the right book, you could go anywhere. Literacy is one of the most important things that a child could ever learn. In order to succeed in society today, one must be able to read, write, speak and even listen. There has been great debate over the different approaches when it comes to teaching children how to read. This essay will go more in depth on both approaches, how the writer learned how to read, how the writer will teach their students how to read.
The strength of the research by Kucan and Palincsar lays in the Identification of a struggling reader and the importance of the teachers to dedicate one on one time with their students in an interactive atmosphere which allows early assessment with rich texts and bearing in mind, other factors such as home, which can contribute in this problem.
My experiences with children in educational institutions and pursuit of becoming an elementary education teacher have enlightened me in discovering effective ways to read to and with children. When I work with kids, I review and select a book that is developmentally and cognitively appropriate for their age. Before I read the book to the kids, I read it to myself and see the message of the author and I generate potential questions to ask the students. Often, I ask students if they are familiar with a certain vocabulary word or if they have experienced an event that occurred in the story. I like to relate the content in the story to the students, so that they can comprehend better and learn from the story skills that will benefit them in the
Good reading comprehension is a fundamental element that students must have to attain. Through researches, it is clearly stated that reading proficiency has a strong relationship between reading proficiency and academic success at all ages included in the university level. It is definitely important to discuss what strategy is the best way to practice to improve BSIE students reading comprehension for the sake of students’ success in the field of teaching.
Reading is an act of perception, analysis, and interpretation done by the reader to get the message to be conveyed by the author in media writing. According to Farr (in Dalman, 2013: 5) suggests that "Reading is the Heart of Education, the reading of reading comprehension is an essential prerequisite for mastery and enhancement of students' knowledge, so after reading the text the reader should be able to understand the text. First, give information, for example by reading newspapers and magazines, secondly, give entertainment, for example by reading a novel. The third one, most importantly reading can provide new knowledge. The book can provide understanding as well as entertaining and providing information.
