It is important to be persuasive in a debate. This is so you can convince the audience to agree with your position. There are three parts of this. They are ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is the credibility in the character. This is the connections, appearance, and trust that a character has. For example, this person could be the one to be prepared for class. They interact with many students. They ask questions in their group. They try to solve problems. Pathos appeals to emotion. For example, the pet commercials make me cry every time. It is important that pathos touches the heart. This is a way that people can relate to it or feel empathy. Logos is appeal to reason. This has to be a rationality with evidence.

The appeal to logos, ethos, and pathos are used everyday in many instances. A commercial is just one instance, and Gatorade commercials use them very well. The specific Gatorade commercial I chose to use was the one where Kevin Durant has a nightmare about being blocked by Dwyane Wade that aired in 2013. Kevin Durant doesn’t want that dream to come true so he practices very hard all while using Gatorade products. Meanwhile Dwyane Wade has a nightmare that he gets dunked on by KD, so he decides to use Gatorade products while he practices. The commercial is essentially saying that if you use Gatorade products that you will achieve your goals easier, and be more like the great NBA players that use the products as well.
The idea of pathos, logos, and ethos is used throughout all three of the passages it is used in how the first passage uses pathos when astronaut Armstrong expresses a meaningful quote hence using pathos. Then in the second passage, uses logos and pathos to describe if a disaster would have occurred but it did not break out. In Neil Postman’s novel, Amusing Ourselves to Death, he argues that rationality in America has become dictated by television. Through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, Postman demonstrates that his claim is valid and reliable. These are three forms of persuasion that are used to influence others to agree with a particular point of view. Ethos, or ethical appeal, is used to build an author’s image. Ethos establishes a sense of credibility and good character for the author (Henning). As Meredith Grey, my fictional idol from Grey’s anatomy would say, “Progress looks like a bunch of failures”. A main focus of this semester was learning our audience, and convincing people of things through writing and or visuals using ethos pathos and or logos. I did not see the connections of any of my papers from the first to second semester at first. But my memoir from the first semester and my campaign project from this semester both use pathos, emotion. For me it was easiest to write about the pathos, but the ethos and logos part was out of my reach. I left some of my comfort writing the campaign paper using all 3 and it gave me a better understanding as a writer to keep in mind who am I talking to, what message am I trying to get across
Ethos, pathos, and logos are all devices that Barbara Ehrenreich effectively uses throughout her novel Nickel and Dimed to prove that America needs to address the commonly overlooked issue of poverty within every community. It is important that she uses all three devices because they help support her argument by increasing her credibility, connecting to the readers’ emotions, and appealing to their sense of logic. The combination of these devices puts a sense of urgency on the problem Ehrenreich is addressing and therefore creates an effective argument.
Alone, the use of only ethos, pathos, or logos would make for a semi-interesting story, but together, they tell a believable account of real events. Beatty makes use of all three techniques to connect with her audience and share her own story as well as hard facts that verify the events. “Pathos, ethos, and logos in The Redeemed Captive” The story The Redeemed Captive is about a man named John Williams who was captured by Native Americans along with his family to be taken to the French. The story goes through John Williams experience of being kidnapped and his relationship and faith in God, this theme is shown throughout the rest of the story. Throughout the story John Williams constantly brings up God and how good He is, this persuades the reader and convinces them to keep their faith in God. He persuades the reader by using the three rhetorical appeals pathos, ethos, and logos.
Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are all ways of persuasion used in anything spoken or written by someone with a purpose. The address to Congress on Women's Suffrage uses each of these ways of rhetoric within the excerpt. In the second paragraph, Ethos is used by referring to the Declaration of Independence. Logos is used by using historical evidence such as the Revolution and Abraham Lincoln. Pathos is also expressed by using adjectives to describe our country with emotion.

Every point that is bought up by the author Ellen L. Lutz uses one or more of these points to help prove that point that native american languages need to be saved.
The appeal of pathos is used in this article to evoke the emotions of the readers. There's different kinds of emotions the readers can feel from reading this article. she uses examples to strengthen the main idea and also to bring out the emotion. In the beginning of her Introduction she uses the word "slaughter" which reveals a terrifying scene on the reader's mind. She then gives examples of the type of crime juvenile committed, murdering, raping, and assaulting someone with harmful weapon.

Convincing an audience in general is a hassle, however convincing a parent to do something, for example allowing their child to take a year off between high school graduation and college, really requires persistence and persuasion. In order to get my parents to at least consider that thought, I would have to appeal to the most useful concepts when it comes to persuasion: ethos, pathos, and logos. When appealing to ethos, I would consider speaking to my parents about my achievements and commitments to school, attempting to come across as a mature and responsible person.
