Difference Between Slavery And Historical Slavery

Today, slavery is not something you see in modern day society. For the most part, people are treated fairly while working, are given benefits such as holidays and the option to take a sick day when feeling ill, and are paid a good wage for their services as an employee. But unfortunately this was not the case back in the 1800s where slavery was popular among the southern parts of the United States.

Slavery was very common around the 1700’s. Slavery is when others (masters) people into their fields to work, even if they didn't want to. From infants to adults, masters took whoever they felt like keeping under their control. A master is the person who owns the slaves, they are the ones to decide how the slaves will be treated and what they will be doing on the plantations. To be a slave means that you don’t have any freedom what so ever, and you are controlled by another person.

First, slavery in America. Most slavery in America happened in the Southern states, in all of the states fully below the 40th parallel. This line, or more accurately, the Ohio River, divided the North and the South, with the North being free states, but the South being slave states. Most of the slaves were treated terribly on the plantations they worked on. “I used to have to pick cotton and sometimes I pick 300 pound and tote it a mile to the cotton house. Slave by definition is a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them. That about sums up what slavery really is in our mind and is pretty much the definition that we all picture when we think about slaves and slavery. But this is not what slavery truly was within the antebellum time period. Most of the slaves had a whole different outlook on the way they viewed, and acted and while living in their unfortunate circumstances. This is one of the few things that will be discussed further on within this paper. Slavery has been around since the start of colonial times in America. At first, it was not very popular, but after more and more people came to America, the industry increased a substantial amount. When the production of cotton increased, the amount of slaves began to increase as well. Plantation owners feared the rebellions of slaves so they whipped and beat them, or is more serious cases killing them, so they learned to not turn on their owner or run away. There were different ways of taking care of the slaves as a Plantation owner. One of the ways was giving their slaves plenty of food, clothing, and not beating the very often. On the other hand, other owners were very cruel to their slaves and beat them often while giving them very little food and one set of clothing. There were pros and cons to each method of caring for the slaves. Conditions and experiences for slaves in the south were different for every slave, whether the were a truth or a lie. If any American today were to be asked to describe the word “slavery”, they would probably describe to you the a time were African America people were enslaved in the south do engage in free labor and harsh conditions. But slavery is much deeper and much more impactful than most realize. Slavery was not just an idea or a set period in time; slavery was an evil spirit that was infiltrated throughout human history from the beginning of time. Nations like the United States have used slavery to their advantage not understanding the true immoral reality of their actions. More specifically in the Old South, black antebellum southerners were oppressed physically and emotionally every day that they were under this system.

When people hear the word slavery, they picture chains, shackles, and labor harder than any man woman or child should ever have to endure. Slavery can be in many more forms than this however. Many men, women, and children were slaves during the 19th and early 20th century, this type of slavery they were in was wage slavery. Wage slavery is a person completely dependens on income from employment. Many men were forced to work hard long hours, women were also expected to work to raise a family, lastly children were even sent to work at age 9 because it was profitable. Though none of these people wore chains and shackles, they were indeed under wage slavery.

A slave is a man, woman or child who is the lawful property of another person and is compelled to obey them. Slavery is the system of possessing slaves, which could be either one slave or many. Slavery in the United States officially began with the trans-Atlantic slave trade, it also began during this period in a lot of other countries. The slavery which was started during the Atlantic Slave Trade still exist today but holds a different form, trafficking, forced labour, and child slavery.

Slavery was a cruel time in American History. It first started in 1619. African americans were brought in to aid production of crops. Slavery goes far back even in the ancient times. Slaves were not treated good and were forced to work. Slaves were African-American, they can be either bought or sold. Instead of hiring someone or doing the work yourself people would buy slaves and force them to do a labor and hard work for them.

Imagine your life as if you were treated worst than a dog or a stray animal and treated as someone’s property. Slavery was the practice or system of owning people. It was a part of life that existed for a very long time. Slavery began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619. Slaves were bought and sold, and used as laborers under orders of whoever owned them. Slaves were treated as prisoners in their own skin because they couldn’t do nothing for themselves but listen to people’s commands. Slaves were forced to listen to their owner without any say so. When talking about this touchy topic slavery was about having no choices at all to what happened, slaves had no control of their lives, and slaves constantly had a fear of violence.

America, the land of the free and the home of the brave has been plagued with slavery for hundreds of years and to this day many are still enslaved. Slavery from the past and modern- day slavery share many similarities and differences. In the past, millions of Africans were captured by Europeans and were forced to move to the U.S in which they began a horrifying life as slaves. These slaves only had one job and that was to do what their masters saw fit. There were usually two types of slaves; the house slaves and field slaves.

When Christopher Columbus first discovered the New World, people of all varieties flocked to this new and mysterious place in an attempt to make a fortune. Many of these people settled on the eastern coast of the United States, in the Bahamas, or in Brazil. In the early Americas, there were many plantations that produced income for the colonists. These plantations were very large, grew substantial quantities of cash crops like tobacco and sugar, and ensured the survival of the early colonies of the New World. There was, however, a hefty demand for labor on these plantations. This led to people who colonized the Americas in the 1600s filling their labor needs with African slavery and doing very well with it.

Slavery is terrible institution that was across America because slaves were traded like livestock, families were broken, and there was inhumane treatment. First slaves were like livestock referred to as a “new lot” . The slaves were stripped of their identity and demoralized having “no wife, no children, no country, and no home. He can own nothing, possess nothing, acquire nothing, but what must belong to another.” Often the women were raped by the owner themselves and their purpose was to reproduce and the owners would then sell the kids. Along with this, the separation of families. The children were separated from their fathers and loved ones never got to even meet their parents. Also slavery is bad because there was many inhumane treatments.

Slavery was the practice of taking a human being and making them do the work of another by force. This was practiced through out the ancient world and especially in Rome and Greece. Slaves were nothing more than just property to the ancient peoples. They didn't have the rights of citizens nor were they able to do what they want in most cases. Slaves had many tasks that they had to do, many of which included taking care of the masters house and kids, cooking and cleaning that house, herding the cattle for the farming families, being guards for some prisons, fighting for entertainment of the masses, and more common was sexual activities with the slaves.
