Thesis: Set in their ways both Abner Snopes and Emily Grierson and have difficulty with coping and facing the change environments around.

Summary: Regarding the characters Abner Snopes from “Barn Burning” and Emily Grierson from “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner illustrates the flaws of ignorance. Both Characters have a immense amount of pride of their situation despite their actual quality of life. Despite the difference in structure William Faulkner’s two stories ultimately carry a similar message as both characters struggle to adapt to the changing environments.

“A Rose for Emily and Barn Burning”

“A Rose for Emily” and “Barn Burning” by William Faulkner are two stories both symbolic, alluding to the changing south, occurring between the “old money” and the new “industrial” period. Faulkner introduces two characters of different background share the same kind of problems and they attempt and solve their problems in similar ways. Emily is seen throughout the south as almost a monument or a reminder of the past the old south. Abner lives in the present, he is always moving on weather or not that is figurative or literal he does both. Abner Snopes holds to his position very strongly despite other peoples opinions and ultimately tend to lead to cause conflict. Abners opinion of Major De Spain is mainly jealousy and filled with pride "You must realize you have ruined that rug. Wasn't there anybody here, any of your women…" ultimately his opinion motivated Abner to turn to
