Differences Between France And America

The French Revolution and the American Revolution have many similarities but there are definitely some differences between these two wars as well. Yes, both wars were focused around liberty and equality and both were trying to gain freedom but the main difference between these two wars were the context. (www.quora.com) America wanted to gain freedom from rules and taxes that Great Britain had put upon them, whereas France wanted to abolish the French monarchy and form a better government where people had more freedom of speech.

A contrast of the colonies are where they settled. The early English colonies settled mostly in Virginia and Massachusetts but quickly spread from Maine to Georgia and even to the Mississippi River. The French Colonies settled in parts of Canada, the Mississippi River, Quebec, and Louisiana. While the Spanish colonies claimed most of the south/southwestern regions including Florida, New Mexico, and places in Texas, and California. Another difference would be where the population of the colonists came from. In English colonies the population arose from specialist such as lumberman and sawmill workers, middle-class farmers, tradesman, convicted criminals, and immigrants from other countries were also allowed over. There are many cultural differences between the United States and France. Some of these are simply social and others are cultural. Hofstede’s Value Dimensions can be used to highlight the differences between the cultures. Individualism vs collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity/femininity, power distance, and long-term vs short-term orientation are all characteristics that differ between France and the United States.

The lifestyle in France, just like in all other European countries, has changed dramatically since the early 1700’s. People went from farmers to factory owners to all of the professions of today’s society. The main reason for the great changes in lifestyle that occurred in France was the Industrial Revolution, which urbanized most of France. But the Industrial Revolution was not the only thing that changed France. The monarchy fell the church changed, and the role people had in their jobs and family life change drastically.

During the European age of expansion in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, various European nations were colonizing the newly discovered Americas. Spain and France would become prominent players in the Western Hemisphere, both conquering and colonizing new territories. However, each country had different methods of developing their colonies in the New World. Spanish and French settlements contrasted greatly with one another in terms of economic development and Native American relations.

There where a lot similarities and differences between the the American and the French revolutions. The French and American revolutions were both countries fighting for independence, almost one after another, the American first, and then the French. Both were very similar, while also, very different. Both were inspired by Enlightenment thinkers, and both involved citizens against the king. The French revolutionists were inspired by the American patriots.

By the early 1600s both the French and the English had established colonies in North America; the French had New France in Canada and the English had colonies in New England and the Chesapeake Region. These colonies were very different but they shared a few similarities. One aspect they had in common, was that the territories they claimed had already been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. The European settlers’ relationship with the American Indian’s was in constant turmoil, and between the arrival of the colonists to 1760 there were many instances of cooperation, conflict and compromise between the two groups.

President John Adams had sent several delegates, one of them being John Martial, to France to help sort out the issues between France and the US, such as the United States not honoring the Franco-American Treaty, formed back during the American Revolution, when France had its revolution, by meeting with minister Talleyrand of France. Three of Talleyrand’s men met with the delegates and told them Talleyrand refused to meet unless a large amount of money was payed. The delegates returned home and informed President Adams, who was outraged. The name of the Affair comes from the substituting of the three French men’s’ names with X, Y, and Z in a Congress report.

As you can tell america’s and france versions may be different but they are alike i some ways. Like america’s christmas on the day after, get up in time to watch their children find christmas presents under the tree and unwrap them with excitement. Also we have a nice family gathering near christmas time. And we write letters to santa. But like us france has their children prepare their letter to ‘le pere noel” Something that is kinda alike to our traditions.

Before the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic Wars, Britain controlled waters very close to America’s shoreline. Britain protected Americas ships heading to Europe. When the Napoleonic Wars broke out, Britain began to impress American sailors into their Navy to fight in the Napoleonic Wars. They als along with France created Laws that interfered with America's trade with Europe. They were forced to stop at Britain to go to France and forced to stop at France to go to Britain.

Another difference between the two countries is their court system. France does not practice judicial review. In the United States, the Supreme Court has the principle responsibility of ruling on the constitutionality of all laws. This kind of judicial review is not practiced in France (Terrill 232). In France they have the Constitutional council which has nine members serving a nine year term, they are responsible for election complaints and the legislation made in parliament. The advantage of this is that it reduces the conflict of jurisdictions. But the disadvantage is that our Supreme Court has a longer term than the Constitutional Council which allows more constant laws and fewer laws that will contradict each other.

Using Hofstede’s four cultural dimensions as a point of reference, what are some of the main cultural differences between the United States and France?

     France, which is the largest nation in Western Europe, is a presidential republic. France is a very important nation in Europe and it continues to be involved in contemporary policy issues. Helping the world as one of the great trading nations, France is a very important trading partner with the United States. Not only is France important to the United States, they are also important to countries all over the world. Their abundance of both mineral and agricultural resources make them a very important supplier of products all over the world. I chose to report on France because it is an interesting county and I wanted to learn more about it.
