Discrimination is the unfair or unequal treatment of an individual or group based on certain characteristics such as age, national origin or ethnicity. This act of discrimination goes back to the 1800s were president Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves and then the Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 confirmed the doctrine of separate but equal which permitted segregation along with equal services to both races. As a result of this, discrimination is happening everywhere in the workplace, community and even in the schools. Language discrimination is consider under national origin discrimination by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Also, 17.5 percent of the population speak a language other than English at home, that means that 45 millions of people are foreign workers. Language discrimination specially on the workplace can cause several negative things to the employer and employee. Therefore, language discrimination should stop because it can negatively affect the employee by decreasing their morale and productivity; also, the company is also affected by lawsuits and decrease in profit. Language discrimination is a continuing problem that is affecting everyone. Workers, especially Hispanics are suffering in their workplace because their managers are making them feel downgraded for the reason of their accent or English proficiency.
