Diversity is a major quality that attracts me to Northwestern. It is important for me to be surrounded by different backgrounds, experiences and outlooks. The diversity at Northwestern is shown in the types of organizations and programs available to students. Another quality is what makes Northwestern an excellent university. Underneath their mission statement, its states, “Northwestern is committed to excellent teaching, innovative research and the personal and intellectual growth of its students in a diverse academic community.” A university that cares about their students’ success and takes pride in their mission to provide the greatest education is a crucial aspect on why I want to attend to Northwestern.

Diversity is very visible in the schools within the United States. When you enter most classrooms you see students from different nationalities. As the immigrant population continues to grow in the U.S., teachers need to make sure they take everyone’s culture into consideration when teaching. It is important for teachers to create an atmosphere where all cultures are recognized and respected. Teachers should ensure to use culturally responsive practices in order to be able to engage all the student and their families, despite where they come from.
Racial diversity is something that is often discussed on college campuses. As a student who self-identifies as a minority in more ways than one I often feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the subject of racism and race. However, often times when these issue are discussed I learn something new; this was the case when reading the articles this week. This week’s articles examined the issue of race from different perspectives. This allowed me to re-examine the issue in a fuller manner; it also allowed me to question some of my own notions that I hadn’t really challenged before.
Diversity is a term known for, "variety." To be diverse is to have a range of different types of people all in one place. Different types of people can range from their race, background, social class, age, or religion. Those are just a few examples that can separate a person from others. To be aware of diversity around you is something everyone should take note of. Diversity on college campuses has increased, which has let people assume that racism decreased and acceptance expanded gradually, however minorities still face prejudice and discrimination. Harvard University presented a research where they gathered college students from 4 particular public universities and questioned them about the social behavior they have experienced or witnessed. In the contrary, they discovered that college students have encountered racist comments or negative facial expressions towards them from Caucasians (Caplan, page 31). This has led to propositions for instance, improving social conduct between children in school, more gratification in regard to one’s culture and positive outlook toward the culture of others because America’s obsession with race and racial attitudes continues to affect individuals emotionally. It is urgent to spread diversity at a younger stage of life, for upcoming children that are starting school. The need of role models around the nation is necessary and relevant to help multicultural education in the schools. With the changing demographics of UW Bothell, diversity and social issues today are increasingly being addressed by students. Current student participation is rising with established clubs and new clubs. The current club structure is connecting like-minded students who want to establish a space where they can help and educate others about what they deem important. These clubs have encouraged students to devote time to global and social issues that mirror localized activism.

Men hold a different standard then woman are, it is okay for man to date woman with a lot of money and nothing is ever said about the man except that he must really love her. But if we flip it the other way around and a woman mad the statement that a man could never be to rich or too thin, then we have a whole new ball game. Woman would be ridiculed for making such a statement. People would say she is only dating him for his money, she is nothing but a gold digger, she does not love him she only loves the things he can buy her, or the places he can take her, she is just looking for someone to take care of her. They way society looks down on woman is not fair. It is discrimination to say that a woman cannot be happy with a man because he makes good money and is educated without people judging her. They always assume that there is an underling reason that she is with a wealthy older or younger man, and it can never be simply because she truly loves him.
