The document that I selected to analyze is document 25-1. Document 25-1 was a speech made by Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt that addressed Congress in 1941. The reason as to why the document was written, was because Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt was explaining to Congress how the feelings felt by the Americans the day after Pearl Harbor. A historical theme that relates to this is the United States involvement in the Second World War. Before the attack, many Americans made it clear that they did not want to be involved in another foreign war. Former President Franklin D. Introduction: December 7 1941 marked a significant date, when the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the United States Naval base, Pearl Harbour. The day after the attack, on December 8 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt presented his Infamy Speech to American civilians stating that; “Yesterday, December 7th 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. I asked that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on December 7 1941”. The purpose of this report is to show that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had no prior knowledge about the surprise attack supported by historical evidence in comparison to Robert Stinnett’s thoughts, the American journalist and former sailor that knew about the Japanese planning a attack on Pearl Harbour in advance.
Being on your phone too much takes away from your boredom and your own creative thoughts. In the month of April 2017, Manoush Zomorodi gave a speech at Ted Talks about how boredom can actually be good for you. Her purpose was to explain to people how being bored leads to great things. She also wants to clarify to people that being on your phone affects your boredom. She describes in her speech that while being on your phone is fun, it never gives you time to actually sit and think. Being on your phone never makes you bored, and Zomorodi wants to show that being on your phone too much doesn’t allow new thoughts to come about. In The American Journey, David Goldfield et al. state that “Americans in the 1930s wanted no part of another overseas war by a wide margin.” Americans were still recovering for the ramifications of World War I and feared our intervention in any foreign conflict. In the fall of 1941, their reluctance was still abounding even though Germany achieved many victories abroad, the British were toiling to save their empire and Japan’s monumental aggression towards China escalated. In fact, Goldfield et al. noted that, “President Roosevelt’s challenge was to lead the United States toward rearmament and support for Great Britain and China without alarming the public.” Unfortunately, the aftermaths of World War I had set the tone for World War II since many small new nations in Europe felt the upper hand of Germany, Japan, Italy and the Soviet Union. Furthermore, the United States was not highly regarded by these nations, especially Japan, whose nationalists felt that they were unjustly treated after World War I. As much as the United States was trying to remain neutral and President Roosevelt wanted Americans to stay out of World War I, the inevitable came to fruition when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. A date so famously proclaimed to ‘forever live in infamy,’ and so it has. This inspiring speech to Congress and the American people employed appeals and other techniques in it’s mission to touch America’s heart, both with sympathy and indignation. President Roosevelt’s use of rhetoric is extremely effective in rallying the American people to the cause of entering a war so many were reluctant to support.

His speech incorporates bountiful instances of rhetorical devices, such as logos, pathos, and ethos. By analyzing these rhetorical devices, one is able to see Roosevelt’s vigorous use of emotion, his strength in addressing his character and reputation rather than focusing too heavily upon appeals to logic and reason, ultimately to get the result he wants from his audience. The profound power of this speech resonates with all who read and hear it.

The first reason why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor is because Japan had different beliefs then America. In document A it shows that the Japanese are being educated that the laws and rules of American are crumbling. Japan believed that their laws are greater and superior of those who are not from Japan. This created hate on the other nations. Japanese also believed that Japan has the best source of the Yamato race. The Yamato race simply means the pure natives of Japan. This is making their race greater than anyone else. The last evidence in document A is that you have to be loyal to the Emperor no matter what you believe. Yet again, Americans called for isolationism and neutrality as they believed America should focus on ending the Great Depression, not worrying about and dealing with the international issues of other nations and peoples. By analyzing Document 5, it is clear that many Americans still believe in isolationism during the Great Depression. Bennett Champ Clark states in his Defense of the First Neutrality Act that “the desire to keep the United States from becoming involved in any war between foreign nations seems practically unanimous among the rank and file of American citizens.” Americans influenced the US foreign policy yet again as the First Neutrality Act was passed in 1935. By analyzing Document 6, it is clear that President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the choices he made were still influenced by isolationist sentiment as he states in his Quarantine Speech that “it is my determination to adopt every practicable measure to avoid involvement in war.” However, it is clear in President Roosevelt's speech that he knew that entering the war was inevitable as he states that the “peace of the world and the welfare and security of every nation, including our own is today being threatened by that very thing (war).” Although the United States tried its best to not enter the second World War for many years, it could not avoided by the end of 1941. On December 8, 1941, 32nd US president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, delivered what is considered to be of the most impactful speeches of all time to Congress. In his speech, Roosevelt declared that December 7, 1941 would be “a date which will live in infamy”, due to the deliberate Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor to hinder the Pacific Fleet’s defense against Japanese forces, that caused America to enter into WWII. Roosevelt relies immensely on the usage of Pathos, Ethos, Logos, and Kairos throughout his famous “Infamy Speech” to help persuade U.S. congressmen to declare war on Japan, and help convince and unite America to support its Allies in the war effort in defeating the Axis Powers (“Pearl Harbor, History.com”). Through the heavy use of these rhetorical devices, President Roosevelt successfully conveys why America should join in his efforts to go to war.
The short story “Speech Sounds” is a science fiction story written by Octavia Butler. This essay portrays a central theme that really opened my eyes as well as many others. This theme is to never take your ability to communicate for granted. Communication is a huge part of our culture and civilization. I never truly realized how important communication really was until reading this story. Without it, we cannot express our feelings in a correct manner. Not being able to connect with other individuals results in it being very hard to cooperate with others, causing chaos amongst society. In a short amount of time, the world would turn on each other causing mass amounts of violence. Likewise, this is similar to the story “Speech Sounds.” There are many takeaways one can have after reading this story.

I learned that Dr. Jeanine Canty is a professor at the Noropa University in Boulder, Colorado. Her passions are about issues of race, oppression, and environmental justice.
