Dog Breed Specific Legislation Imagine someone has just moved to a different town and the townspeople decide that the person that just came to town is a threat, so the town creates rules that say the new person is not allowed to do certain things or go to certain places. This is how I suspect the following dog breeds feel nowadays: Pit Bull, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Jack Russell Terrier, Spaniel, Collie, Saint Bernard, and Labrador Retriever. A lot of people feel strongly for our furry friends and when they found out about this legislation they wanted it shut down completely. Using the death based approach, 66 out of 76 of the Pit bull type were purebreds and the rest were crossbreeds, 17 out of 27 were purebreed German Shepherd dogs, 7 out of 8 were purebreed Saint Bernards, and 1 out of 5 were Labrador Retrievers (Stacks et al. 838). The rest of the totals were cross breeds. Using the dog-based approach, 98 out of 118 were purebred Pit bull-type, 24 out of 41 were German Shepherd, and 7 out of 8 were purebreed Saint Bernard (Stacks et al. 838). Out of all these studies, they found out that 24% were deaths involved with unrestrained dogs off the owner's property, 58% were unrestrained dogs on the owner's property, and 17% involved restrained dogs on the owner's property, and 1% involved a restrained dog off the owner's property (838). This however can be justified, most of these dogs bite for a reason just like people may lash out on other people if they are mad or angry. In an article done by the American Veterinary Medical Association they said that “ Based on behavioral assessments and owner surveys the breeds that were more aggressive towards people were small to medium- sized dogs (2)”. They mentioned that since they are small they are less likely to inflict serious bite injuries. Pit bull owners deal with dogs with a strong breed stigma, which basically means that they need more time to be played with and attention to them.
