Oh, it’s something! When I was young I use to love being busy, but my downtime was playing with Barbie’s, watching Disney movies, or being outside with my next door neighbor. To me that was relaxing. In Doing Nothing is Something Anna Quindlen rants between two topics, she says that doing nothing is when the brain is the most creative, and thinks the most. Then Quindlen says that she use to hate being told to go outside and do things. What is doing nothing? “A hiatus that passes for boredom but is really the quiet moving of the wheels inside that fuel creativity” (82). Everyone has a different meaning of doing nothing, or what creativity is, and how it comes to be; but nothing is when your mind runs, it isn’t boredom, but entertainment and it’s different for every individual. …show more content…
Some kid’s think of bad things when doing nothing, others create things. Kids get bored easily, that is a simple fact; but when they get bored that doesn’t mean their minds’ have stopped working instead there spinning with thought. For this reason schools put in recess, and summer; giving the kids a break. Not to bore them, but to giving their minds time to work on what they want! With this break comes a busy schedule of fun!
As I was growing up, when I was sent outside to play, I had things to do that I loved to do. I created games I had never thought of before. I can now depict the past, figure out what went wrong, and when it did; from keeping myself busy with things I love. The creativity and thought process doesn’t stop when you are a child; it continues into adulthood and is there throughout your
The authors utilize the rhetorical appeals of ethos and pathos to show their conflicting argument on if children should be micromanaged. In the first article, Anna Quindlen claims that children shouldn’t have every minute of their lives scheduled because “downtime is where we become ourselves” and that allows children to grow. Her use of vivid imagery prompts the audience to empathize with the children. She describes the nostalgia of having “day trips to the beach” and “pickup games” that are no longer available to today’s generation. Quindlen also established herself as a sincere person since she explains how “‘doing nothing’ is when human beings actually do their best thinking”, it is that unstructured free time, that allows for children
Using persuasive writing, Wright begins to influence his audience that game play is a beneficial source of entertainment not a wasteful one. Playing video games increases creatively, self esteem and improve problem solving skills of the players. Video games are becoming test runs that appear or feel close to the real thing. Where you can control everything with added effects like magic or future technology. Games have the potential to exceed almost all other forms of entertainment media. They tell stories, play music, challenge us, allow us to instantly communicate and interact with others. Encourage us to create things, connect us to new communities, and let us play with people across the world. Unlike most other forms of media, games are inherently tangible. According to Wright young children spend their days in imaginary worlds, substituting toys and make believe into the real world that they are just beginning to explore and understand. Wright states that games are the result of imagination and that they consist of rules and goals. Generation of teenagers has grown up with different set of games. Teenagers use the scientific method rather than reading the manual first. Games today maybe a person’s only place to express a high-level of creativity and growth. Older generations have a lot of criticisms for games, the games can help a person learn to think on his or her own.
Being on your phone too much takes away from your boredom and your own creative thoughts. In the month of April 2017, Manoush Zomorodi gave a speech at Ted Talks about how boredom can actually be good for you. Her purpose was to explain to people how being bored leads to great things. She also wants to clarify to people that being on your phone affects your boredom. She describes in her speech that while being on your phone is fun, it never gives you time to actually sit and think. Being on your phone never makes you bored, and Zomorodi wants to show that being on your phone too much doesn’t allow new thoughts to come about. Zomorodi’s primary audience was toward middle age people that could not keep their phones away from them. The theme
Kids on my block always loved to play outside. Growing up we always knew each other. We cherished the times we would spend with each other. Whether it being on the Scorching hot days of Summer, the chilly days of Fall, Or the rainy days of Spring. We would be on that street hanging out and spend time with each other.
But “it means just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering” (142). This is an inconsistency, as for how you are listening while open to anything but you cannot hear. We can hear, but we do not bother on doing anything because we are happy, like Pooh was happy with what he saw and doing nothing. Hoff also says, “an empty sort of mind … can see what it is in front of it,” (146) with an empty mind one can appreciate what is right in life instead of chasing what is wrong with life, thus enjoying what is
Remember when you were little and someone asked you what your favorite class was? If you were like me or any of my peers, without thinking about it your response was “Recess!” It was not that the other classes were not as enjoyable, it’s just that the freedom we got: socializing with friends, running around, and being as loud as we could without getting in trouble.
And last we are going to talk about what is recess. To begin with we are going to talk about why we need recess. Now and days kids are just sitting in class rooms locked up learning all the time witch learning is good but it feels like our brain is going to explode this is why we need recess. Our brain needs to relax sometimes if our brain doesn’t get a break it probably won’t be able to function right .
“In Praise of Boredom” by Ellen Ruppel Shell shows that nowadays parents are putting too much pressure on their children, and they aren’t letting them be a kid and have free time. Children are missing out on having fun during free time and having an imagination. When children aren’t forced to be in activities, they become creative in their free time. Children develop imaginations when they are by themselves and not forced to do activities with other children.
When kids are bored, they look for something to do; sadly, it could mean mischief. Many children are left unsupervised. Unfortunately, without supervision, they are put at a higher risk for using drugs or alcohol. In fact, The National Survey on Health reports that there is a spike of first -time users during the months of June and July with December being a close third. They also engage in criminal activity and dangerous behaviors. To help solve some juvenile delinquencies, the increased school year will help with boredom by keeping students involved in school activities. With children becoming actively involved for longer periods of time, they will have continuous structure and continuity, which is important because children feel secure when their lives are predictable and are more likely to thrive. With these daily expectations, students will meet their fullest potential.
Although she noted children’s need of leisure time and the misuse of time, she missed the importance of learning and the benefits of a social life. As a result, I believe Children should have prior knowledge throughout their life to have creative thoughts. Quindlen conveys in her essay that one cannot become creative without lots
In her essay “Doing Nothing Is Something,” Anna Quindlen states that our imagination is created when we are doing nothing. When our mind is not distracted, we take time to ponder upon thoughts. Children’s unlimited usage of technology takes away key aspects of a child’s development. Because children become engrossed in technology, they lose the ability to form important bonds and lose childhood experiences that cannot be replaced, but on the other hand we do have to recognize technology plays an important role in this and future generations.
I recall waking up at my grandmother’s house, a striking image of the beige curtains slightly ajar, the glimmer of the well-known star radiantly giving warm life to the living room, my small six year old body running into the living room, turning on the monster of a television set, carefully powering on the Gamecube system, and carefully listening to the peaceful hum of the game disc spinning while I rest on the heavy wooden chair. Being able to be a protagonist who can explore different worlds, meet strange, or beautiful characters; it led me to buy more video games and enhanced my ability for my imagination to soar like a phoenix.Today, I log much of my time in video games that bear countless hours of open adventure, that allow you to make choices that affect your protagonist and the universe around them, and grant the capability to design your own
In the essay “School Is Bad for Children,” John Holt, the author, explains why the current school systems are failing children, but he gives ways on how the system could be fixed for children. Holts explains how a dull education is killing off the creativity in children. He gives solutions to fix the educational system by abolishing compulsory attending and replacing it with authorized absences, taking children outside of school to field trips to get a better understanding of the lesson being taught, have professional people come into the classroom to teach on the subject they know best, and finally have children work together instead of sitting by their self. Holt gives good points on what is wrong with the education systems that is happing in today’s modern world. It is agreeable that the current school system is failing kids, however instead of having voluntary schooling systems the educational systems need to be shorter, have more break, and start later. In general, schooling needs to be a place where children want to attend and be able to learn.
Combats Learning Loss: According to the National Summer Learning Association, “All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.” In fact, extensive research has shown time and time again, students
I really liked and still do like playing video games but they didn’t really make me the person I am today, but I do remember on snow days me and my friends would play all day and sometimes my
