In her article “Gendered Racial Violence and Spatialized Justice,” Sherene H. Razack explores the murder of Pamela George; the way that her murderers’ sentences were lessened because of a variety of factors pertaining to Ms. George’s life; and the fact that the murderers were young, white, and middle-class men.
Being determined means that you can reach and strive for anything, even if your not strong or smart enough. Both Althea Gibson and Barbara Jordan share many things, but best of all is the fact that they are very successful African-American women. But of course, what makes them so successful? Both woman strived for success to be great African-Americans who have accomplished many things. Although they can compare to be great African American role models, they may also compare to their determination. This is true but they may also differ, they both are very successful but their achievements are completely different.
A very controversial court case in American history was Texas vs. Johnson (1984). In 1984, a man named Gregory Lee Johnson followed a group of anti – Reagan protesters to oppose the American exploitation of third world countries. This act of rebellion resulted in the burning of the American flag. Out of a total of approximately one hundred demonstrators who were involved in this ordeal, Johnson was solely charged with a crime. Johnson was arrested under Texas law, which made the burning of the United States or Texas flags crimes. Johnson was convicted and sentenced to one year in jail and fined two thousand dollars for his crime in restitution. Texas reasoned that the police were preventing
It’s almost the end of 2016 and we still experience discriminative trouble. We are all different but should accept others differences. After reading “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?”, by Etgar Keret, “Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion”, by William J. Brennan, and “American Flag Stands for Tolerance”, by Ronald J. Alle, I have found fluent differences in the people explored and the way the people accepted others. In “Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion” the people of Texas are having a hard time accepting the fact that Johnson had burned a flag. In “American Flag Stands for Tolerance” the writer states that burning the flag wasn’t illegal and should accept those who express what they believe, even if you don’t agree with them. In the story “What, of This
In the book Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee (Dee Goong An), the main character is Judge Dee, a magistrate in China’s Tang dynasty. The roles of a magistrate include but are not limited to, being a judge, detective, jury and police officer. The book follows three of Judge Dee’s cases, the Case of the Double Murder at Dawn, the Case of the Strange Corpse, and the Case of the Poisoned Bride. In order to be a distinguished and powerful magistrate, one must lead with Confucian and Legalist values. Judge Dee is an effective magistrate because he blends both Confucian and Legalist values seamlessly, and is well aware of the Tang dynasty’s social hierarchy.
One of the most important cases in the history of the United States, especially for the freedom of American speech and expression, was Texas v. Johnson. This landmark Supreme Court case allows burning the American flag as grounds of symbolic speech. For the Supreme Court, the question was the desecration of an American flag, by burning or otherwise, a form of speech that is protected under the First Amendment? During the Reagan administration, many were upset due to Reagan’s policies, especially his military buildups and his missile reforms. During the Reagan administration, many protests took place, including arm bands to protest military, and sign waving to protest Reagan’s tax cuts that “favored the wealthy”. When the Republican National

Out of frustration and determination she studied and took the LSAT. She was soon accepted to the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
On Thursday, 08/11/2016, at approximately 1638 hours, I, Deputy Stacy Stark #1815 was dispatched to speak to Sheila Haggard about a report involving financial exploitation of an elderly couple. Haggard was a case manager with Shawnee Alliance. I spoke to Haggard via telephone. Haggard explained she spoke to an assistant Jackson County States Attorney, Rebecca Blomer and was advised to call the police department to file a report.
The Texas judicial system has been called one of the most complex in the United States, if not the world. It features five layers of courts, several instances of overlapping jurisdiction, and a bifurcated appellate system at the top level. The structure of the system is laid out in Article 5 of the Texas Constitution.
Margaret Lea Houston (April 11, 1819 – December 3, 1867) was First Lady of the Republic of Texas, First Lady of the state of Texas, and a founding member of Concord Baptist Church in Grand Cane. She was a poet and an accomplished musician. Her influence on husband Sam Houston persuaded him to give up alcohol and profane language. Margaret gave birth inside the governor's mansion to the youngest of their eight children, as angry mobs gathered outside in response to her husband's opposition to Texas signing the Ordinance of Secession of the Civil War. He was removed from office for refusing to swear loyalty to the Confederacy. Their eldest son joined the Confederate army and was left for dead on the battlefield at Shiloh, saved by a Union Army
Since Texas won independence in 1837 there has been a debate which city better Austin or Houston. They have both been the capitol of Texas at some point in time with Houston being really close is why in 1842 the capitol was move to Houston, but it would only last two years. In 1844 the capitol move back to Austin because of the Archive Wars.
Texas v. Johnson (No. 88-155). Argued: March 21, 1989. Decided: June 21, 1989 In 1984 the Republican National Convention was held in Dallas, Texas. While there, a group of protesters, opposed to President Reagan's reelection, burned an American flag. Specifically, Greg Johnson was seen dousing the flag with kerosene and lighting it on fire. Johnson was arrested under a Texas flag desecration law. He was convicted and sentenced to one year in jail and fined $2000. The State Court of Appeals affirmed but the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed the decision.
As times change, so do our cultural expectations and sociological acceptable norms. The image in the link provided above captures a peace sign printed on the American Flag, which is being raised during a strong anti-war protest in Washington, D.C. (Vietnam: Anti-War Protests 1). This distortion of the flag captures the citizen’s opposing views towards U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia. During the 70s, the defacing of an American flag to express unity and tranquility would have been an acceptable and powerful statement against the brutality and the turmoil of the Vietnam War (Levy 5). In today’s world, this defacement would violate the Flag Protection act of 1990, which is a result of Texas v. Johnson, a supreme court case in 1989 regarding
The removal of a pregnant woman from life support will result to an ethical dilemma especially where there is a law prohibiting it, such as the Texas law. With reference to pregnant Marlise Munoz who suffered from blood clot in her lungs and was pronounced brain dead. She was rushed to the hospital after collapsing in her kitchen. Furthermore, she was there was no supply of oxygen to her brain for more than an hour. Her family requested that she be removed from life support since it was against her wishes to be artificially kept alive. The hospital did not agree to this citing the Texas law which protects the life of the fetus (Farber and Blustein 99).
As humans have to learn how to tolerate others diversity. It is important to accept others no matter how crazy it may sound to you. The lottery was about a small village that had a certain way of things and did the “lottery” every year, meaning you would pieces of paper and sorry not sorry but if you had a dot you were gonna get stoned by your friends and family and people you knew on a personal level. Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion is about how people are getting kinda defensive about how others treat the flag. The Wife’s Story is about a family whom in the beginning we are lead to believe they are just a normal family but we soon realize they're not so normal after all. “The lottery”, “Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion,” both support
