The Virgin Suicides relates the story of the Lisbon family and the multiple crises they face, particularly acute suicidal risk of all five daughters. The family consists of the father, Ronald, the mother, and five sisters, Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary, and Therese. The family experiences both major and minor crisis events throughout the film, ultimately ending with all five daughters completing suicide. While there were numerous individuals experiencing a crisis, the neighborhood boys, the entire Lisbon family, and several other minor characters, this review will focus specifically on crisis incidents that surround the mother and two daughters, Cecilia and Lux. This analysis will utilize the Double ABC-X model and suicide risk assessment.
Cecilia
Cecilia is the youngest of the Lisbon daughters, being only thirteen. She is slight, thin and plain. She is quirky, as evident by her wearing the same wedding style dress throughout her entire appearance in the film, as well as precocious and introverted. She is an environmentalist, as evident by her reaction to the condemning of the tree in her front yard, her grief about the fact that a frog was added to the endangered species list, and her overall fascination with nature discussed in her diary. Cecilia appears alienated from her family, perhaps misunderstood because of her drastically different personality. In regards to Cecilia’s initial crisis that involves her suicide attempt, by means of exsanguination through wrist
Since the girls were depressed, this later resulted in their suicide. "Suicide attempts are usually made when a person is seriously depressed and feels that there is no way out of their problems" according to D'Arcy Lyness, PhD. Adolescents commit suicide because they feel as if they can not escape emotional pain. The Lisbon girls were simply depressed. The majority of adolescents who commit suicide suffer from depression. From the film The Virgin Suicides, it is obvious that the Lisbon girls are depressed. The Lisbon girl's depression was the cause of their
The hyperbolic lack of individuality in The Virgin Suicides changes both the image of the boys and the girls. The narration is through the perspective of the boys as one entity, an indistinguishable chorus, rather than from separable perspectives. The chorus of boys views the girls as one entity “separating” but ultimately “coming back together” (130). They can only see the similarity of the girls: their similar hair, morals, upbringing, clothes, disposition, stature, age. This exemplifies that the girls themselves did not draw the boys in, but only the beauty of their sadness and the grandeur of their mass suicide.
Through use of narration in The Virgin Suicides, Jeffrey Eugenides portrays the issues that come with the blind idolization of women. The Virgin Suicides is narrated by a group of teenage boys obsessed with the mysterious Lisbon sisters who live across the street with their hyper-strict parents. The narrators have a mystified and enthralled tone as they study every aspect of the sisters lives, completely captivated with every minute detail about them. Eugenides critiques the objectification and blind idolization of women through building a narration that acts to develop a tone of complete obsession in The Virgin Suicides.
Suicide is defined as the act of taking one’s own life voluntarily. Sometimes, talking about this situation makes people very uncomfortable because, according to today’s society, it’s a terrifying word. For this reason, most people try to avoid this subject they are unwilling to talk about it or deal with it. Suicide has become the third leading cause of death for teenagers; the rate of suicide has increased dramatically over the years. Teenagers who commit suicide suffer from a severe case of depression, leading them to think that the only solution to end their pain is by ending their own life. The difference in gender plays a role in how one may take their life. Males usually use guns or knives to hurt themselves while females usually use pills. It’s important to take this subject seriously and try to find different solutions for this social issue by applying a variety of sociological theories including the structural functionalism, the conflict theory and the symbolic interactionist.
Prior to leaving Primary Care Services, Dr. Lockhart appointed you as the reviewer for the Suicide Risk Screening Audit (SRSA) on October 21, 2015. The SRSA was instituted by OIG, as a safety requirement for veterans. As such Hampton VA Medical Center needs to comply with the SRSA for OIG. A signed copy of the Appointment letter is attached. To date, you have completed the monthly audits as required.

Shadrack was a citizen of the bottom, he fought in WWI, return back as a damaged man that couldn't cope with reality of what was happening in the world, his mental state of mind was unstable he live around the border of the town to find harmony in his life.
The third key idea is the gender gap. The text defines the gender gap of suicide by explaining that even though women have a higher rate of suicide attempts, men have a higher rate of suicidal deaths. This term was well defined in the article and the information given with it was presented substantially. The authors put together convincing statistics, although one source that was associated with multiple statistics was from 1997, which brings to question the validity of those statistics in today’s rapidly- changing society; almost 20 years later.
The first aspect I picked is the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. I feel that this resources can help in understand the resources available to clients who are suicidal. It also provides some training information on assessing and managing suicide risk. This web site has many pages on effective prevention including Care Transitions. This could be useful in assessing a patient and offering them resources to help them get over the feeling of being suicidal.
Interventions. To determine Sara’s level of risk for suicide I will administer the following: Reasons for Living Inventory – Older Adult version (RFL-OA), Suicide Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ) and Beck Depression Inventory (Jacobs, Baldessarini, Conwell, Fawcett, Horton, Meltzer, Pfeffer, and Simon, 2003). The RFL – OA is a self-report that will measure a person’s beliefs than could contribute to inhibition of suicidal behavior and there are six factors which include survival and coping beliefs, responsibility to family, child-related concerns, fear of suicide fear of social disapproval, and moral objections to suicide (Linehan, Goodstein, Nielsen, & Chiles, 1983).
This week clinical I felt better prepared than I did with my first week. I was able to focus a lot more on interpersonal skills and develop therapeutic relationship with my patients. In terms of Mental Status Examination (MSE), this assessment provided me with a helpful base of information from which to observe changes, progress, and monitor risks. Especially, suicide risk assessment is a gateway to patient treatment and management. The purpose of suicide risk assessment is to identify treatable and modifiable risks and protective factors that inform the patient’s treatment and safety management requirements. I got insight into how important it is to document suicide risk assessments with sufficient information. Documentation of suicide risk assessments facilitates continuity of care and promotes communication between staff members across changing shifts. It is easy for suicidal patients to “fall through the cracks” of a busy psychiatric unit that has rapid patient turnover of admissions and discharges, and mostly during shift change. Asking question such as “What is your view of the future?” or “Do you think things will get better or worse?” helped me to elicit important information regarding patients suicidal ideation. Additionally, how my patients expressed their hope about the future assisted me to identify, prioritize, and integrate risk and protective factors into an overall assessment of the patient’s suicide risk and include in MSE.
A track on the Everybody album, by Logic (Sir Robert Bryson Hall), Alessia Cara, and Khalid, illustrated an artistic, educational, inspiring, and honest song released on April 28, 2017 through the Visionary Music Group and Def Jam Records in Los Angeles. This heartening song aiming to encourage suicide prevention through it’s title and lyrics made a profound impression on America, as reported by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline “On the day of the release (April 28), The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline received the second highest daily call volume in it’s
In both texts, the collapse of the family is influenced by each household’s religious way of life. Firstly, in The Virgin Suicides the decaying house of the Lisbon family is a symbol of the family’s deterioration and downfall after Cecilia’s suicide as they neglect its upkeep. Therefore, it demonstrates a paradox of the doctrines of Christianity as the house takes on a hellish form. It firstly acts as a safe place for the family to hide from the local community. However, the more Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon trap their daughters in their highly religious house, the more they are reminded of Cecilia’s death.
Suicide is now an international epidemic, and students are under constant surveillance at home and school. Handlers are called when there is a chance that a teenager has caught the epidemic and the handlers take them to The Program. In The Program the patient stays six weeks or longer and all the memories that are important that may have caused depression are stolen from his or her memory, and go back to the real world with the only few memories they’ve allow them to keep. There are so many missing memories and broken puzzle pieces in their lives. It begins when, two years ago when Sloan was fifteen her brother, Brady committed suicide down by the river. Now seventeen Sloan’s best friend Lacey was put in The Program for six weeks after being
“More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, combined,” according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an issue thoroughly discussed in the novel The Program by Suzanne Young. This dystopian story features a society where there is an overwhelming amount of teen suicide. It uses many realistic aspects of life that allows the reader to relate to the exaggerated reality of the story. The author uses the act of suicide and brings it to an extreme sense to create a realistic plot.
Because teen suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for Idahoans age 15-34 and specifically for males age 10-14 this program will be directly targeted to children, both male and female aged 10-17, (5th-12th grades). The specific behavior that will be targeted is bullying.
