Dr Pepper has been around for years. Nowadays this beverage might be your favorite soft drink but it wasn’t always so popular. It had to endure many hardships on its journey to where it is today. There was also a lot of luck and dedication involved. You might not even know where the beverage even comes from. Well I think it's about time you found out.
In 1885, at a drugstore in Waco Texas, a man by the name of Wade Morrison had hired Charles Alderton. Alderton was a pharmacist but he also served soft drinks to his customers. Back in that time there weren’t as many soft drink selections to choose from so Alderton would often combine sweeteners with fruit extracts. He had invented many different flavors. However one flavor sold better than

In order to keep the trend going A man name Robert Lazenby, a chemist, decided to work with Morrison to form the Artesian Manufacturing and Bottling Works in the year 1891. This event was able to get the town of Waco to be able to reproduce the soft drink. During this time the company had its first slogan. It was a simple slogan that just said “Drink Dr Pepper,” This slogan would be used for the company and the drink for a while. This company ran for about 29 long years until it was purchased in 1920. The company who bought Artesian Manufacturing and Bottling Works was another manufacturing and bottling company known as Southwestern Soda Fountain. They would later change their name to the Dr Pepper Company. (Dr Pepper Museum, 2008) During this time Dr Pepper had taken its first logo and second slogan. To replace the old slogan the new one had taken a different approach it was complicated yet simple. This new slogan said “Good for life,” (T. Stark, 2012) Later in the 1950s Dr Pepper had officially dropped the period after Dr. This was done so that the company would not be mixed up and confused with the medical profession. (T. Stark,
The soft drink was first created in 1783 when Jean Jacob schweppe invented Carbonated water. A young pharmacist from Waco, Texas named Charles Alderton invented Dr Pepper in 1885. He served it the drugstore he worked in. The soft drink was named after the owner of the drug store named Dr. Charles Pepper. About a hundred years later three new yorkian health food store owners made a new apple soda and was named Snapple. Snapples were originally sold in health clubs in 1973. The beginning corporation owners of Snapple was known as Unadulterated Food Corporation, then later became Snapple Beverage Corp. In 1995 Dr Pepper was bought by Cadbury Schweppes. Later in 2000 Snapple was also bought by Cadbury Schweppes. “In 2003, the four North American beverage companies under Cadbury Schweppes – Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc., Snapple Beverage Corp., Mott's and Bebidas Mexico – were unified under a common vision, business strategy and management structure to become Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages” (Dr Pepper Snapple Group). Dr Pepper now “is a leading producer of flavored beverages in North America and the Caribbean. Our success is fueled by more than 50 brands that are synonymous with refreshment, fun and flavor. We have 7 of the top 10 non-cola soft drinks, and 9 of our 10 leading brands are No. 1 or No. 2 in
The histories of Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb have a lot of unique facts and it is one way that they differ. Dr. Pepper started in 1885 in the Texas town of Waco. It is the oldest major soft
“Americans drink 13.15 billion gallons of carbonated drinks every year” Marion Nestle. Most of these carbonated drinks are different types of soda, which when boiled down leaves behind a tar that causes things as stroke, obesity, and heart disease. They have been taught all of their lives that it’s okay to drink soda from advertisements on the television and magazines, or from people around them, but have been told to avoid alcohol whether in school health class, by family members, or by advertisements on the television, which in moderation can lower the risk of both heart disease and stroke. Both alcohol and soda can cause major health problems, however the strokes and obesity from soda consumption
The company now known as Dr Pepper Snapple Group was originally started in 1885 by a young pharmacist named, Charles Alderton, in Waco, TX. According to the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Dr Pepper is the oldest soft drink in the United States. One of the legends state that the soft drink was named after Dr. Charles T. Pepper, an old Friend of the “Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store,” owner, Wade Morrison where Mr. Alderton worked. Some say Morrison was thankful to Dr. Pepper for allowing him to marry one of his
They like to build their own brand. Many redesigns have happened over the years including removing the period in Dr. in the 1950’s. By doing this it allows them to reach their target market and appeal to customers that are interested in them or already purchase their products by offering a facelift and a competitive edge. By reinventing the look of a product it gives them all the acknowledgement and build up. “As we continue to invest very heavily in our most profited brands to drive the revenue up and sustainable growth by strengthening consumer awareness, innovating against our brands to take advantage of evolving consumer trends, improving distribution and increasing promotional effectiveness” (Strategy 2017). Mainly a person of low income would be the consumers for Dr Pepper. There have been a few changes in their target market over the years. Products get mainly bought at dollar store type of businesses and gas stations/convenient stores. More non-college students and Caucasian started purchasing the product more. This has to do with the over stocking of the product during grocery shopping or packing the pantry. You see more non-college students because of how expensive other brands are at bulk price and most of these people are predominately “Caucasian and upper middle age”(Insights and Demographics 2017). Many of the target markets stayed the same, yes they profited and reached their goals but there wasn’t a big
His greatest invention came from the idea of the smell of the different kind of fruit syrups, and the smell of the drug store he worked in. After giving a sample test of his new drink to the owner of the drug store, and him liking the taste of it, Alderton gave his invention a greater opportunity to expand by offering it at the soda fountain. According to Dr. Pepper Museum (2016) His creation of this soft drink was exceptional, like no other drink, making other soda fountain operators ask for it too. It came to the point where there was high demand of the product that Alderton and Morrison could not produce enough for others to purchase. The product was so good that it started to be recognized. Alderton had no interest in making his own invention a product in the market, so he
According to its official website, Dr Pepper original and most well-known product is Dr Pepper with 10 flavors. The company also unveiled Diet Dr Pepper with several flavors with the aim of satisfying customers who seek out a sugar-free soft drink. Another well-known product is 7 Up, a lemon-lime flavored and non-caffeinated soft drink.
The first soft drinks in the 17th century weren’t originally carbonated. Instead, they had the ingredients of lemon juice, water and sweetened with honey. In 1767 the first-ever carbonated soft drink was created, and it was made by a doctor named Joseph Priestley. The first flavoured carbonated soft drink ever to be made was in the year 1807. It was made by a man named Philip Syng Physick. In the early years many pharmaceutical companies established the pop fountains. Consumers assumed that soft drinks had healing assets, and basically considered these drinks to be soda remedies for example, it could of cured head aches In fact, “Coke was developed while looking for an antidote to the common morphine addictions that followed the Civil War:

He first tells us a story about how Dr Pepper was saved by Howard Moskowitz. In the early 2000s, Dr Pepper was looking to expand its market share. Moskowitz helped Dr Pepper by inventing Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper. Moss describes in detail how Moskowitz found the perfect formula for the new soft drink. Moskowitz made millions of iterations of the Dr Pepper formula with the Cherry and Vanilla formulas added. The variables altered were the amount of formula used, the color of the packaging, the color and feel of the liquid, and the test group’s sex, location and race. The results were entered into Moskowitz’s computer, and a process called “conjoint analysis” was used to determine the most attractive features (479). Moss met with Moskowitz in 2010, and learned about Moskowitz’s past in the army. He was trying to find out how to get troops to eat a consistent amount of food. They liked a fancy dish, but eventually grew tired of. He gave them bread and they ate tons of it, but they complained it wasn’t filling them up. It was here Moskowitz’s discovered “sensory-specific satiety”, a contradiction where the brain makes you feel full after experiencing heavily spiced foods. Moss states that companies like Frito Lay take this into account when designing their flavors; make them flavorful but just enough so that the brain keeps craving
Obesity has become a real problem in countries around the globe, in America especially. Corpulence, when seen so widespread, is an epidemic and it is one that needs to be rigorously helped. Soda is a large part of Americans’ lives which is unfortunate knowing what it can do to you. These laws to be passed in New York that bar the use of food stamps for excessively sugary beverages are hopefully a step in that direction. However, soda is not the only cause for people’s rotundness. Many factors including fast foods, junk foods, and the egregious amounts of sugar in too many products also contribute to this sweeping problem. So my question is this: why stop at sodas? New York could really set a precedent if they bar the use of food stamps for
The original source of all carbonated drinks was Joseph Priestley. Aside from being an English clergyman and scientist, his curiosity sparked from the gas that bubbled from fermentation vats. Using this interest in gas, he created sparkling water in 1772. Basing his knowledge off of Priestley’s work, John Pemberton created a syrup that was originally made for medical purposes. He used this syrup and sparkling water to create the tasty drink known as “Coca-Cola”.
This product was the first artificial sweetener to be publicly sold and through its distribution there became monstrous effects on the old customs of sweetening. Before Sweet N’ Low was invented, people primarily used sugar and molasses as sweeteners, but other ingredients such as honey, maple syrup, and brown rice syrup were still in high use. These substitutes for sugar were great for its time but Sweet N’ Low was able to satisfy the modern era through its many advantages that these products did not have. Sugar cane was difficult due to the agricultural restrictions, since it required a warm, rainy climate to be able to grow (The Pros and Cons of Biofuels). Maple syrup and honey were inefficient since they could only be retrieved during certain times of the year and then once retrieved it took a lengthy period of preparation before it could be sold (Foreman, Diana). With the advantages Sweet N’ Low had, companies, stores, and businesses quickly began to get involved with the idea of artificial
According to the article of “Sugary Drinks”. New York City’s Board of Health passed a rule of banning super sized sodas in restaurants. This proves that they care about other people health besides themselves. This problem is that New York City’s Board might see or hear about people that are overweight, sickly , and might dissolve your teeth.
Coca-Cola Company history originated in 1886 when the “curiosity of an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton, led him to create a distinctive tasting soft drink that could be sold at soda fountains” (Coca Cola History, 2013, para. 1). He generated flavored syrup, took it to his
