In act one of The Importance of Being Earnest Oscar Wilde used irony which had a great effect throughout the entire act. Situation and dramatic irony occurred many times throughout act one. Situational irony developed when Lady Bracknell said, “You can hardly imagine that I and Lord Bracknell would dream of allowing our only daughter - a girl brought up in the utmost care - to marry into a cloak-room, and form an alliance with a parcel?" This is an example of situational irony Jack thought Lady Bracknell would accept him. However, the opposite of what was expected happened. Therefore, Lady Bracknell did not approve of Jack marrying Augusta. Another example of irony happened when Algernon said, “Good heavens! Lane! Why are there no cucumber
George Orwell’s allegorical novella, Animal Farm is a satirical retelling of the events leading up to the 1917 Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalin. After the animals rebel against Mr. Jones and his employees, they set up a government constituted by “Animalism”, which in its raw state parallels the basic principles of socialism. In order to govern them, they create basic laws meant to unify them known as, “The Seven Commandments”, which they write on the outer wall of the barn. However, the pigs begin to disobey the commandments and change them to get away with it. None of the other animals notice due to their illiteracy, so Napoleon continuously exploits this fact to get what he wants. As a result, the farm that was meant to be utopic

Imagine a person wearing a medal for the fastest sprinter in the world has a speedometer attached to him. He is getting ready to sprint in a 100-meter race. Two seconds after the whistle blows and he takes off, his speedometer reads 1 mph. That was unexpected, which is the whole point of irony. Irony is found in many stories. Although readers may think irony used in stories are for temporary effects of the moment it is read, the author has a bigger purpose than just enhancing their story. The authors of “The Sniper”, Liam O'Flaherty, and “The Princess and the Tin Box”, James Thurber, utilize situational irony to present the moral of each story.

Dramatic irony is a valuable tool used by writers in literary works in order to engage the audience in the works and to add a level complexity to the characters. Dramatic irony is understood by the audience, but not the characters. With this particular type of irony, the writer makes the audience more involved and they are able to empathize more with the characters in the works. Although the character may be heavily disliked, dramatic irony can cause the viewer to feel a sense of empathy as though they were in the same situation. With this technique, the character may also seem more real and relatable. And more often than not, when dramatic irony is used, the viewer will be put in a position of helplessness. In A Doll House, Ibsen takes advantage of this technique and utilizes heavy amounts of dramatic irony with his characters, especially Torvald, in order to engross the audience and also to place the audience in a position where they are hopeless, which could
Panic was set though the mind of Jeffrey the raccoon. He just woke up from two weeks worth of sleep. Snow had fallen on the ground, making it impossible to find more food. The snow covered ground looked white all around, with not even a footprint in the snow. The small trees around Jeffrey were ending under the weight of the snow. As he looked around for any bit of food, the air felt extremely cold. It was almost as if the air was laughing at him. The only sound came from the skunk tail he put in his log, rattling in the wind. He put it there to scare his predators. He vividly remembers his proud feeling as he put the tail up on his log. Jeffrey was so hungry, all he could think of was eating the skunk tail. It looked so good.

In the “Tale of Two Cities,” Dickens weaves irony throughout novel by installing ironic deaths and situations in order to show the reader that retribution will never be achieved, especially in the face of war. For example, in Book 3 Chapter 10, Charles Darnay is taken in for a second trial in Paris during the French Revolution. During the trial, the third witness was announced unexpectedly, Dr. Alexandre Manette. In Darnay’s first trial in Paris, Dr. Manette persuaded the Jury to not find Darnay guilty with a crime he ceased to do. Furthermore, Dr. Manette did not want him imprisoned, for Darnay is his daughter’s loyal husband and his granddaughter's loving father. But, before Dr. Manette met Darnay he had condemned Darnay’s entire family line
Contrary to how people often appear to others, there is a great deal more depth and inner turmoil than what manifests on the surface. Henrik Ibsen, the author of A Doll’s House, is a Norwegian playwright who often wrote on controversial topics, not necessarily taking sides, but rather revealing to the world the truths people often try to avoid. A Doll’s House reveals another one of the world’s commonly avoided truths by taking the story into the center of many people’s lives: their home and family. In A Doll’s House, by Henrik Ibsen, he shows the difference between the facade people often don in front of others and the reality behind their facade; the literary themes irony and symbolism play a vital part in accentuating the differences between
The first play that will part of the argument will be ‘A Doll’s House’. It is a play where the main protagonist, Nora Helmer is from the very beginning treated by her husband as his personal ‘plaything’ which he considers his private property. The nicknames that he gives to her are sufficient proof. “Is that my lark twittering there?”; “Is it the squirrel frisking around?” (Act 1: Torvald) The irony is that ‘squirrels’ and ‘larks’ are considered to be free animals and that is exactly what is Nora is not. Helmer sees his own wife as nothing more than a property that he has to maintain to look beautiful and presentable, while Nora believes that it is her duty to make sure that she fulfills all whims of her husband and alter her appearance as
