This essay is going to be talking about a poem called Dream Deferred. I selected this poem, since I liked the wording of it and what Hughes was writing it about. The title to me tells me that a dream can always disappear and that some dreams can fall. My first impression of this poem was wow! The reason I liked the poem was because the wording he used. This poem before I researched about, I thought it meant that someone has a dream and that their dream has been vanished. This poem's tone is negative, because in one part he's talking about African Americans and how they don't have freedom. The poem has to do with African families and how their having to face prejudice and economic hardship (GradeSaver 2). People make decision everyday and they get ruined or don’t happen. In “Dreams” by Langston Hughes he shows that everyone has dreams and dreams die. …show more content…
This poem was published in 1951, and I don't know anything about that time period other than that there were poems written in that time period (The Life and Work of Langston Hughes 3) He was born in Missouri, then he moved to Lincoln, Illinois to live with his mom and then they finally settled in Ohio but Hughes began writing in Illinois. He went to many different colleges, but he was in Washington D.C. when he published his 1st book The Weary Blues. He then moved to Pennsylvania. He worked in odd jobs such as assistant cook, launderer, and a busboy (The Life and Work of Langston Hughes 3)He wrote about African families having no rights and no freedom, but I don't know if that was from that time
The well known poet Langston Hughes was an inspiring character during the Harlem Renaissance to provide a push for the black communities to fight for the rights they deserved. Hughes wrote his poetry to deliver important messages and provide support to the movements. When he was at a young age a teacher introduced him to poets Carl Sandburg and Walt Whitman, and they inspired him to start his own. Being a “darker brother,” as he called blacks, he experienced and wanted his rights, and that inspired him. Although literary critics felt that Langston Hughes portrayed an unattractive view of black life, the poems demonstrate reality. Hughes used the Blues and Jazz to add effect to his work as well as his extravagant word use and literary
James Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1902, in Joplin, Missouri. His parents divorced when he was very small, and his father (who found American racism made his desires to be a lawyer impossible) left the family and emigrated to Mexico. Hughes' mother moved with her child to Lawrence, Kansas, so she and he could live with his grandmother, Mary Langston.

Although the Jefferson and the founding fathers anticipated a better country after the creation of the Declaration Of Independence , America has not fully fulfilled these hopeful ideals. Langston Hughes is an extremely successful and well known black writer who emerged from the Harlem Renaissance (“Langston Hughes” 792). He is recognized for his poetry and like many other writers from the Harlem Renaissance, lived most of his life outside of Harlem (“Langston Hughes” 792). His personal experiences and opinions inspire his writing intricately. Unlike other writers of his time, Hughes expresses his discontent with black oppression and focuses on the hardships of his people. Hughes’ heartfelt concern for his people’s struggle evokes the reader’s emotion. His appreciation for black music and culture is evident in his work as well. Langston Hughes is a complex poet whose profound works provide insight into all aspects of black
Hughes brings out such a strong message in this work that it is not just relevant to the year it was written (1938), but has an extremely strong purpose and voice today. Langston Hughes did not have the easiest life. One can see those struggles, especially through this poem. He was an African American author born in 1902, and raised by his grandmother in his early childhood. He then went to live with his

An immediate place and setting are not given or hinted at. One can derive the historic time though from the publishing year, 1951. This time is right before the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. when segregation was still legal and African-Americans were seen as second class citizens in the U.S. From the historic time one can assume the geographic place is the United States, perhaps somewhere in the South. The persona is that of someone educated, possibly a professor or a college student. Figurative Devices Hughes uses similes throughout the poem, except for the first and last lines.
In this poem, Langston Hughes basically addresses the limitation African Americans face in the pursual of their version of the American Dream. The 1900’s was an American Era prime with racial segregation discrimination, and subordination. African Americans still kept their status as “slaves” in the eyes of White supremacists and there was a rise in violent attacks upon them, by radical groups such as the KKK, that thought that the entire race shouldn’t exist.. During that period of time, there were many peaceful protests and activists who championed for equality of African Americans, expressing this right through both political actions as well as artistic actions, such as poems. This specific poem outlines the idea that African americans will have their American Dreams oppressed because of the environment they live
“Dream Deferred,” is a poem written by Langston Hughes discussing what may become of a dream that is put off, delayed, or postponed by external influences. Throughout the poem, Hughes uses questions about concrete things in everyday life and compares them to the ignored dreams. Langston Hughes isn’t referring to the dreams we have when we go to sleep at night, he’s referring to an aspiration or a desire.
Throughout the poem “Harlem,” Langston Hughes wrote with increasingly destructive images to warn of the dangers of postponing your dreams. These images help present the poem’s very strong message that a dream deferred can be very painful. The thought of how great the dream is nags at the dreamer’s mind until they can no longer bear it. The “explosion” result of this pestering dream deferred can actually be good for the dreamer. The dreamer may
Throughout most people's life, they have this idea or goal that they want to achieve. This idea then becomes their dream, but people do not always fulfill these dreams. There are obstacles that come in the way of people being able to fulfill their dreams. In “Harlem [A Dream Deferred]” Langston Hughes uses imagery and rhetorical questions in order to demonstrate what happens to a dream. The theme that appears through Langston Hughes poem is the theme of not pursuing a dream. Through Hughes poem, this theme is demonstrated and the imagery helps in conveying the idea of having a dream postponed.

After poetry is written, published, and circulated, analysis of the poem must take place. It unveils and discusses the themes, figures of speech, word placement, and flow of the piece, and "A Dream Deferred," is no exception. In Langston Hughes's poem, A Dream Deferred, the theme is that no really knows to dreams if they are not reached, and very realistic figures of speech help convey this idea; the poem can be surprisingly related to Mr. Hughes's life through the subtitle and quotes from Langston himself.
