A Dynamic Woman Wisdom is a characteristic that one possesses due to their experiences in life and learning from those experiences. The societal qualities of people in the Elizabethan time were focused on how money equals power. However, to have money, that person had to be educated and wise. This put women of this particular era in a bind due to the fact that women were not supposed to be educated unless their wealth family demanded them to be. In the play The Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare portrayed the character Portia as a dynamic, powerful woman with education and wisdom. Portia is used to represent how women are given and equal education to a man, they can prove that they are just as, if not wiser than any man that walks onto …show more content…
She demonstrates this intelligence by disguising herself as a lawyer in order to save Antonio’s (the actual merchant of Venice) life. She realizes that the only way to save Antonio’s life is to dress, talk, and act like a man. Portia tells her maid that, “they shall… think we are accomplished with what we lack” (III. iv. 63-65). They both know that the only way for them to be taken seriously, is if they change themselves into someone that the men would actually listen to – another man. To her, this did not matter because, in the end, she was able to save Antonio by using her intelligence, which is vital to having …show more content…
She demonstrates this by talking about mercy in a long speech that stuns the men around her enough to where they feel they owe her a debt of gratitude. “We do pray for mercy, and that same prayer doth teach us all to render the deeds of mercy” (IV. i. 206-208). Mercy is another key quality to understand and have in order to be wise. Mercy is showing forgiveness and not harming someone who has done something to hurt someone else. Portia gives a very impactful speech about mercy in order to save someone’s life. She delivers it so well that she accomplishes her goal of saving someone, as well as teaching an evil, unforgiving character how to have and show mercy. This is a great example of her intellectual level, as well as her level of
In order to become a hero the trait of wisdom must be presented in an individual, this is because without wisdom you would not be able to lead others into success. In The Once and Future King, King Arthur is taught by a magician named Merlyn who turns him into different animals to learn lessons that he soon uses in his later life as King. This passage below explains that wisdom is something that must be experienced with time:
When Claudio describes his sister to Lucio in I.i.182-186, he says " . . . in her youth there is a prone and speechless dialect, Such as move men; beside, she hath prosperous art when she will play with reason and discourse, and well she can persuade."
Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement; the quality of being wise. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, there is one character who shows a tremendous amount of wisdom. Atticus shows his wisdom throughout the story by teaching Scout how to be young wise girl and teaching her how to read and write. Shows Jem how to be wise and knowledgeable , and shows it in the defending of Tom Robinson.
The only work that they could do was moneylender or something to similar. It is shown the idea of Shakespeare; he is a democrat, which means he is democratic in a traditional liberal sense of the world. In another way, he is all main equal and many of his plays show the women as the heroine and they are smarter than men, or just smart. In fact, with her idea, she solves the problem; she creates solutions in a way that is not normal exhibited from the society. However, it is possible to notice in this play that Portia has to disguise like a man, so it is notable the role of the women in this period. Shakespeare moved forward, he made a huge impact. He promoted a very democratic idea of the polis of sexist. A woman save the day of the Merchant, she was
Wisdom is one of the traits of hero, but what is wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to make the right judgment, the right decision, because the situation is fully understood. A wise person has a complete understanding of the situation and makes the soundest decision for the best result. The connotation for a wise person is a person that
It cannot be obtained only through age, but in overcoming perilous scenarios and succeeding in experience-filled events. The growing definition of the word “wisdom” sets a feeling to the reader as though she did
What does it mean to have wisdom? Some may say to be wise is to have enough knowledge and good judgment to make well thought out life decisions. Wisdom is a common term mentioned throughout out the New Testament Epistles and the entire Bible. The Bible has a lot to say about wisdom and knowledge. It talks about ways to be wise and ways to be foolish. Through out the Bible there seems to be different types of wisdom and it is described in different ways. Analyzing all types of wisdom and knowledge will help us decide what the Bible means to be wise.
It takes countless decades and mistakes to acquire enough experience, knowledge, and good judgement to be considered a wise individual – a person everyone looks up to, and asks for advice. Wisdom is understanding and seeing the truth in life. It is the capability to recognize the aspects of life that are truly important and distinguishing them from the aspects that are essentially useless. Many authors incorporate one or more characters within their novels that possess the characteristics of a wise individual. In both Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom and King Lear by William Shakespeare, the protagonists Morrie and Lear are able to acquire wisdom after undergoing hardships and tribulations. Morrie is undeniably wiser than Lear as shown through his view of society, family, and his philosophies revolving around forgiveness and suffering.
Shakespeare initially introduces Portia in a way that her wealth and socioeconomic status are immediately evident. Not only is Portia rich and stunningly beautiful, but she rounds out the image of a
The feminist critical perspective examines the roles that women play in literary works and their true significance to the text. Their roles are usually decided on by the society or time period in which the story is set. In "The Merchant of Venice," females were suppressed by the societal ideals of Shakespeare's Elizabethan era, which is portrayed through the characters of Portia and Jessica, who could not establish their own powerful identities because they were women. Portia and Jessica are the main female characters in the play. If they had been given a chance to show their skills, they undoubtedly would've been extremely strong women. However, they had to mask their abilities in order to appeal to their male counterparts. Their
The Merchant of Venice is a play set in a very male and Christian dominated society where other religions and women rights weren’t very well accepted by the community. However Portia, a rich woman who had previously been controlled by men, triumphs as she manipulates tricks and saves the lives of the men.
What does it mean to be wise? Webster's Dictionary defines the word "wise" as being "marked by deep understanding, keen discerment". Through the telling of the ancient Mariner's tale, the Wedding-Guest became sadder and wiser. He became sad in that he identified himself with the shallow and self-absorbed mariner. However, the mariner changed his ways. The Wedding-Guest became wise through realizing that he himself needed to alter his ways.
Not only can women pretend to be men, therefore exhibit the commonly associated prestige; they can also exceed men’s capabilities. In the contraband letter, Bellario describes Balthasar (Portia in disguise) as a young man, but urges everyone in the court to "let his lack of years be no impediment" (IV i161) even though wisdom and keen sense are often associated with established adults. At first, Portia seems to support Shylock when she contemplates the case, so he remarks, "How much more elder art though than thy looks!" (IV i250). Portia’s looks are deceptive, but she is actually hiding her sex, not her age. Shylock is unknowingly amazed by a female’s intellect and continues to praise Portia repeatedly when he refers to her as a "noble", "wise and upright", "most rightful", and "most learned" judge (IV i245-303). After Portia shifts her argument to favor Antonio, Gratiano praises her in similar ways. Her intelligence astounds the court. In the final scene, Antonio, Bassanio, and Gratiano "are all amazed" (V i266) when Portia reveals the secret identities she and Nerissa took on. She proves that women can demonstrate more keen intellect than
Aristotle sustains that wisdom consists in knowing the cause which made a material thing to be what it is. For Aristotle, wise people know more than just what something is; they also know why it is what it is, or what causes it to be what it is. People with wisdom, for instance, a master worker understand not only that fire is hot, but also know why it is hot. Those with experience only, who do not know why something works in a certain manner, cannot teach. Say physicians understand that there is a relationship between the medical condition of this class of patients and the ingredients in this particular drug. They are then motivated to learn why the drug works on these
Portia is the heroine of The Merchant of the Venice. The first mention of Portia was through Bassanio talking to Antigo: “In Belmont is a lady richly left, and she is fair and-fairer of words” (Act 1, scene 1). Even the opinions of other people around her showed that she is indeed a kind-hearted person. Another instant is when Bassanio mentioned Antigo debt, Portia shows deep concerns even through it wasn’t her fault. “before a friend of this description shall lose a hair through Bassanio fault” (). She wants to be helpful to the people she loves therefore thinking of an answer to this horror situation. This not only shows the characterizes of sharp witted, but also the nurturing heart she processes.
