Every year the NURSE Corps provides underprivileged Americans with charismatic, hard-working, and qualified nurses. These underserved communities go without health essentials such as vaccines or basic checkups due to a lack of medical professionals. Thankfully, there are people who are willing to get involved to effectively bring healthcare improvements to towns and cities across the United States. However, it takes a special kind of person to touch the lives of the underserved. People and families who strive for basic necessities need someone who can take charge of a situation. They need someone who has experience working with people in their situation and will listen to their needs. Supplies being late, trouble finding the exact equipment, and being physically inept due to my broken ankle hindered the process. Nevertheless, I was posed to get this project done. I remember making trips to the nature preserve with my dad, trekking through the mud on my crutches to get everything necessary for its completion. Eventually I lead my troop to Baltimore Woods that April day to put the finishing touches on the kiosk and complete my Eagle Project.
Gaining the rank of Eagle Scout taught me what it takes to be an effective leader—a quality that will be indispensable to the NURSE Corps. Nurses in this program have to take charge of daily situations to ensure underserved communities get the healthcare they are entitled to. This can often involve doing logistical work that no one wants to do, but must get done. Moreover, it is the leader’s job to ensure it is completed even if that means doing it themselves. I experienced this first hand as Vice President of my Rugby Club at Syracuse
