Abecedarian Project According to all of the videos I watched and articles I read, early childhood education has benefits for the child’s development as well as for our society’s economy. The two programs we were instructed to research are very similar. Both projects focus on the education during the earliest years of life, ages 0-3 years. Both believe that this early education will have an effect on the children throughout their entire lives. Head Start began as an 8-week program in 1965. The inspiration behind it was to fight against poverty in the United States by giving children a chance to grow up with a better education experience. After just the first 8-week program, it was launched into a full year education center. Over the years, it expanded, developed new policies to shape into a better program, adopted better curriculum, etc. in order to be the best program it can be. According to their website, “Head Start promotes the school readiness of young children from low-income families through agencies in their local community.” Their goal is to give parents, children, and employees an opportunity to succeed. Early Head Start offers programs for pregnant women, infants, and toddlers until the age of 3, when they are ‘school ready.’ Head Start takes children of up to 5 or 6 years old.
