The Easter Offensive was a military campaign conducted by the communist People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) against the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and its allies in 1972. The PAVN, led by General Giap, caught the United States and South Vietnam by surprise when they dropped guerilla warfare approach and launched a three-pronged multi-division cross-border invasion. With ample intelligence but lack of decisive direction, it hardly raised eyebrows when PAVN managed to achieve surprise in the Easter Offensive. Throughout the Vietnam War, there were many instances where PAVN was able to tap the Allied communication network. This does not came as a surprise as the South Vietnamese were lax about security. The 5 May 1964 edition of Saigon Post carried an interview with the South Vietnamese II Corps commander who revealed the existence of a radio link between a Viet Cong base and Hanoi and the transmitter was successfully located thanks to their "modern equipment" (Hanyok, 2002).
