The most interesting future research direction that comes to mind for me is the line between warm and hot. To clarify, it is a well-known psychological phenomenon that as temperatures rise, so does aggressive behavior. If physical warmth, as demonstrated in this study, increases interpersonal warmth, where does that effect stop and begin moving toward that increased aggression? I’d be interested to see if the manner in which the physical temperature is delivered also plays a factor. In this study, it was a more concentrated, subtle approach to priming temperature. Would turning the heat or air conditioning on high influence interpersonal warmth similarly? Instead of concentrating the physical temperature on one part of the body (the hand),
Throughout this semester of Psychology 150 I have learned a great deal about several different concepts that I consciously, and sometimes unconsciously, find myself applying to my life. There are five different psychology topics I found that held the most relevance to my life. Some of these topics do not deal with myself exclusively, but they do affect the people I hold dear to me. The topics range from disorders to personality differences, and they all affect me in some way, both indirectly and directly.

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide or LSD is a hallucinogenic drug that can be taken orally, injected or even absorbed through the skin. Once LSD has entered the body, it starts to take effects on the levels of serotonin in the brain which can cause; hallucinations, mood change, and even sensory distortion. After taking LSD, the effects on the brain usually last from 6 to 9 hours depending on multiple factors; the dosage of LSD taken, the subject taking LSD, and even the user 's mood can affect the duration of LSD use. LSD is a non-lethal, non-addictive, and a non-habit forming drug that has little to no effect on the long-term health of an individual. However, LSD has been illegal since the 1960 's. Not only did availability of LSD become scarce with the criminalization of the substance, but the legislation also put a halt on the research of the chemical as well. Much of the way LSD interacts with the brain has been left unknown. This derivative from the rye fungus Ergot has been the source of controversy that has left many people wondering why LSD has been classified as a drug that is just as dangerous to use as heroin. It becomes difficult for an individual to understand how legislation could criminalize a chemical without completely understanding how it functions and affects people. LSD should be legalized for scientific, medical and recreational usage.
Research that works with non-numerical data and often tries to understand how people make sense of their social world capturing the How and the Why
In the book In Cold Blood, Dr Jones, a psychiatrist, diagnosed Perry Smith with schizophrenia causing him to believe Smith had no control at scene of the murder of Clutter family. “I knelt down beside Mr. Clutter, and the pain of kneeling—I thought of that goddam dollar. Silver dollar. The shame. Disgust. And they’d told me never to come back to Kansas. But I didn’t realize what I’d done till I heard the sound” (Capote 244). Despite Smith’s acknowledgment of Dick’s plan, Smith has trouble fathoming of killing Mr. Clutter. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by withdrawal from reality caused by a combination of genetics and environment. Readers can infer mental illness runs in Smith’s family since two out of three of Smith’s siblings committed suicide.
principal fields, with scenarios: developmental, physiological/biological, personality, clinical/counseling, social, industrial/organizational. Perhaps the field that best umbrellas the author’s firsthand experience is Physiological/Biological Psychology, since the
As society advances, teens lose a sense of identity and therefore are prone to depression. Sometimes this depression has sustaining effects. For example, if a teen has friends who pressure him to be to himself, he might feel less worried and feel sad. Often he has no idea to whom to turn. Henry Longfellow once said that, “Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not, and often we call a man cold when he is only sad.” One’s attitude is affected by one's secrets. Shane, the protagonist in the novel High Heat, suffers from depression and subsequently conquers it. First, he loses his beloved father to suicide. Second, Shane finds out that his father was a petty drug dealer who had no self-control. Thereby, Shane’s view of his father
While mainly all drugs are supplied into the U.S, the country also produces some illegal drugs on a relatively large scale. The most common illegal drug that is made in the U.S is cannabis. The country has never been a big exporter of illegal drugs. In fact, mostly every drug consumed is imported. One of the drugs that is snuggled into the U.S is ecstasy. Canada is a significant producer of ecstasy.
My initial thoughts towards behavioral research did not encompass a complete understanding of its significance. Thus, there was a feeling of ambiguity towards its relevance, especially in the scope of everyday life. However, after reading Chapters 1 and 2 of Methods in Behavioral Research, the necessity for behavioral research became more defined. Specifically, the findings accumulated through research can be applied in various aspects of life, such as aiding mental health professionals in patient care decisions, developing educational programs, and influencing Supreme Court decisions (Cozby & Bates, 2012).
Throughout this course I have learned many things about research at an introductory level. Research is a critical part of all of our lives in many ways. God blesses each of us with a degree of common sense and we all learn from observing others even as babies, we learned behaviors and skills by observing our parents. Walking through experiences throughout life teach us a lot we need to know as well but sometimes we have to take a better approach when we need to learn about certain things. Many of us know that what works in some situations or with certain individuals doesn’t always work or is the safest option for another situation. Controlled and precisely organized study allows scientists to compare and examine contrasting methods and concepts, also helps them to discover various approaches and be able to learn from individual’s behaviors and experiences. I will act as the case study throughout this paper in order to observe what I have learned about.
Research can be a very scary topic when it is first introduced to a class, and I was that scary student. Research to me was like learning how to swim for the first time with a life vest on, and my heart beating 100 miles per hour because I’m so afraid. Taking off my life vest and diving into this research course has been very rewarding for me. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time. It has open my eyes up to a variety of ways I can start and conduct my research. Research is not so scary anymore. In this paper, I’m going to tell you about the things that I have learned and perfected while taking this course.
Katie great job on your discussion post. I have to agree with you, the author was all over the place. I too read this article but felt it was very confusing so I decided not to write my discussion based upon this article. I understand he was talking about the drug Ambien however, he went from comparing it to Ecstasy and LSD then abruptly went to talk about how Eminem and Coldplay use it. Honestly, this is where I lost interest in the article. I also agree that there was no closure. He left me wondering what he was trying to tell us. His thoughts must have been all over the place as it shows in his writing. I found it funny that you thought he might be on something because I too had a similar thought. From his writing, I wondered if he too
The poem, ‘The Ecstasy” is one of the more well-known works written by John Donne. In the poem, Donne seems to agree with the philosophy that true love can only be available on a spiritual level and explains what the process is to get there. The purpose of this essay is to analyze how the poem expresses the unique ideas of love and how two people make connections through different pathways, aside from just the physical bonds.
I. Open with Impact: Is the climate warming? The impacts of global warming will be felt across the globe.
One of the most all time debated and controversial topics to date in science is global warming. Over the last few decades climate change have lead scientist to develop a theories that human beings are the major contributors to the global warming crisis. Many theories suggest that different types of issues contribute to the warming of the planet but the mitigation strategies to slow this process down vary as well.
