Edison’s Portrayal
A dreamer, an inventor, and above all, Thomas Edison was an ambitious and ruthless businessman who manifested the deep determination to take over the electricity market. Edison’s portrayal in Moran’s book “The Executioner’s Current” holds much more realistic and in depth aspects of his personality, than shown in the short excerpt, “They Transformed the World” pertaining to “America’s greatest change-makers.” On top of being an inventor, as shown in the excerpt, Moran’s portrayal of Edison displays him as an aggressive and competitive businessman by using the media and press to influence public opinion, as well as by pushing for the Electrical Execution Act.
Edison knew he could persuade the

Edison announced, “Just as certain as death, Westinghouse will kill a customer within six months after he puts in a system of any size. He has got a new thing and it will require a great deal of experimenting to get it work practically. It will never be free of danger”1 Through these tactics, he did indeed accomplish his mission of alerting the public, and it was not about to end.
After receiving the attention of the public due to the speech, Edison published a pamphlet entitled “A Warning from the Edison Electric Company”. This red pamphlet included attacks on competitors such as Westinghouse, who Edison claimed was a patent violator. (Moran 58) Edison’s attack was on-going and continued as the newspaper consisted of an article, “Edison Predicted It”. “’It’ was the New York Board of Health’s conclusion that the only way to light safely by electricity was to control, by ordinance, the strength of the current.”1 (Moran 58) Edison manipulated the public to think that by using by the AC power it would succumb to death due to the dangerous tension. The aggressive businessman Edison gained the dominance of the market and trust of the public.
Edison was not done in trying to destroy Westinghouse’s business and reputation, which is evident through his support of the new electrical execution
In 1884, Nikola Tesla arrived in the United States from Europe with nothing but his clothes, a letter to Thomas Edison, and a genius idea. Tesla approached Edison, and the latter hired him. The two worked to improve Edison’s direct current system of electricity. However, the two later split due to the two’s clashing personalities; Thomas Edison acted more stubborn and potent while
In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the first incandescent light bulb in a competitive community. The invention of the electrical light bulb was built on commutative work done by previous scientists and researchers. Edison was invited to William Wallace workshop to examine the Wallace’s prototype. Edison thought that the prototype has something wrong, “I believe that I can beat you making the electrical light. I do not think that you are working in the right direction” Edison told Wallace [1]. Therefore, he decided to do make his own electrical light and there race was started. After a week of his visit to Wallace workshop, Edison was already invented the first light bulb. The success that was achieved by Edison led to a big success for his company,
Thomas Edison is seen as the grandfather of technology to most but, not all. Edison is seen to some as a villain in history as he has gotten credit for ideas such as the light bulb that had come from someone else. The truth is Edison is both not an angel nor devil. Edison is a hero because of his large amount of inventions, he took challenges and used them for strength over weaknesses, and he is seen as a role model as both an engineer along with a person in general. Edison could also seen as bad from the fact sometimes he let his wealth control him and some of is innovation ideas are believed to have been stolen. The truth is Edison is neither extreme however should be viewed much more positively than negatively.
The light bulb had already been invented before but Thomas Edison improved and perfected the light bulb. The new light bulb that Thomas invented lasted for longer periods of time .Thomas thereafter went on to invent an electrical power system, so that people would have electricity and could use the light bulbs at home.
As time went on, Edison’s projects became bigger. He needed to come out of small shops and have a laboratory of his own. Edison decided upon building one in West Orange, NJ. Towards the end of the construction, he was very excited and proud of the much needed space. In a letter to a close associate of his, Edison recognizes his talent in inventing.
From this video I learned that back then it was a brutal world of people just craving to be the center of attention like Thomas Edison. Thomas Edison was careless of other people around him and only caring about himself, his inventions, and money. I also learned that just because someone wants you to be a certain someone and do something they want you to do just because they say so or teach you to do something, doesn’t mean you should listen to them or do exactly what they are saying and wanting you to do. Just like Morgan not listening to his father even though he was grown up learning how to follow his father’s footsteps and to not take risks. Morgan just passed though keeping some of his father’s teachings but still taking risks that made him even more powerful and wealthier. The last thing I learned about this video was that if you want to be the best you sometimes have to take things in your own hands and find things out yourself. Tesla had to quit his job to find out and figure out how to put his idea together and turn it into an idea to a million dollar brilliant invention.
Biograph was not in a financial position to survive if Edison took his case all the way to the Supreme Court—even when he was wrong, he was too powerful to lose
By the end of 1887, Westinghouse owned a total of 68 AC power stations to Edison's 121, and that number was rising quickly. Edison knew he had to act fast, he knew he needed to prove that DC power was superior. In February of 1888 Edison began his first attack on AC. Edison's propaganda war front began with, "A Warning from the Edison Electric Light Company", an 84 page pamphlet that was sent to any company considering buying from any of Edison’s competitors.
Historical facts about Con Edison Company I would like to give breath information which is really too helpful for further examination for us.

J.P and Edison embark a new company The Edison Company. They begin to lay out 15 miles long over 1,000 ft of copper wire.A new era is started electric street lights line the cities and houses.Until now Rockefeller hasn’t been challenged, but now is challenged by electricity his standard oil is going out of business. Rockefeller is trying to figure a way to show people that electricity is dangerous. Railroads,Oil, Steel, and electricity have changed the world. Nicholas Tesla is one of Thomas Edison’s interns Tesla was very interested in Edison and electricity. Edison is ignoring his enterprise and his new successful invention “Alternating current.” Nicolas Tesla is one of many bright men that worked for Edison, nikola resigns after Thomas ignoring his invention.Edison is arrogant and wishes Tesla good-luck materializing his own company and having someone investing in him. Tesla eventually has a notable person invest in him named George Westinghouse,Westinghouse and Tesla believe that alternating current is more powerful than “DC.” Tesla then begins travelling the country showing the power of voltage going through his body to show people the ability and the power of “AC.” J.P Morgan finds himself in an
Thomas Alva Edison will always be an important figure in American History. his ingenious innovations he created were astonishing and marked a huge step for mankind towards the future. In the Biography written by Martin V. Melosi he explains in great detail how Thomas Edison's innovation shaped modern society in America. In the book Melosi states " Edison was hardly a modern man, but he left the world with a legacy of invention that helped to create the twentieth century as we know it."(Pg200)
Rockefeller made a huge footprint in the world. Just like the setbacks he made some minor and some major footprints. One of the minor footprints was he was one of the most rich people of his time plus he was also one of the only people to ever gain monopoly off of buying/shutting down other businesses. But then the major footprints are sabotaging the light bulb in its early stages which attacked his business and the light bulb business. Plus he made the first trust (monopoly) in history of the USA. With that trust the court and government became suspicious about his actions. Another major footprint was that he made one of the most well worked companies that still exist today, his company turned into two major ones they are Exxon and Mobil that soonly moved together to make
The success of ELECTricity is dependent on a clear accountability structure with our internal leadership and external strategic partners. We are held accountable to standard metrics and a commitment to creating social value. This allows us to focus on scaling the impact, not the
I decided to do my report on Thomas Alva Edison because he brought a lot of things into our world. He invented the light bulb, the alkaline battery, the phonograph, and many other things. Many of our modern electronics origins came from Thomas A. Edison. I thought he was very interesting. That is why I chose him.
