Purpose of education: In my view, one of the fundamental purposes of education is to enable active learning which not only deepens understanding of the concepts at hand, but also enhances intellectual character. Rather than viewing education as a one-way transmission of knowledge from teacher to student, I am of the belief that education should follow a student-centric paradigm in which students are integral parts of the educational process.
The characteristics of such constructivist pedagogy symbolize education not as an end goal, but rather as a life-long process through which the intellect is continuously developing. Throughout my own education, I have most admired professors who are able to not only engage students in the classroom environment, but also have an ability to translate concepts raised in class to ones that are relevant in the outside world.
Learning Goals: In consideration of the above, I have three overarching learning goals for any courses I may teach:
1. To create an active and stimulating learning environment to develop students’ intellectual character.
2. To foster critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
3. To enhance students writing and research abilities.

Martin Luther King said the purpose of education is to, “…enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life (King, 1947).” Eleanor Roosevelt argued that the purpose of education is good citizenship (Roosevelt, 1930). Others, like Newman (2006), posit that education is a much broader idea. It is the “entire process by which a culture transmits itself across a generation” (Newman, 2006). A purpose of education is letting a student be engaged in learning something different to them, something the students will need in life to conquer a task that is not known to them. Pointed out by Johnson (2015) students need tools and resources, these should be provided by the teacher and the student should learn and acquire them for their own purposes. Education should be not just confined in the classroom and textbook, students should be encouraged to explore and research information beyond that. I will provide my students with the knowledge that education is something they need to learn, and that it is useful in everything they do.
It is important for my students to understand and value learning goals in the classroom. At the start of every chapter students will be supplied an outline of what they are going to encounter in the upcoming weeks.

The great challenge for constructivism is that the world in which students and teachers interact is not utopian.
