In our society we can see many negative effects of censorship. The type of censorship we have could easily lead to a world that is shown in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In Bradbury’s novel he details how the government censored the society because they allowed it to happen. This became a trend because people no longer wanted ideas that challenged their thinking. People did not speak up when witnessing censorship, but instead they would continue to allow it by reporting others for having books. In the novel it is explained by Guy Montag’s boss Captain Beatty that censorship didn’t start with the government, it started with the conflict in minority groups, and technology that allowed entertainment to be easily digested without offending anyone. (Bradbury 57-61) Censorship is the suppression or prohibition of any part of film or printed materials that could be deemed as obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. We can see many forms of this in our society today that could lead us to the world of Fahrenheit 451. One great example of current censorship is the suppression of authors. Books that have any examples of controversial topics should be censored is some way to conform to ideas to not offend others. The novel F. 451 has even been censored at one point. Many passages in the novel were modified or eliminated entirely, due to offensives words like hell, damn, and abortion. (Karolides 487-489)
