The Treaty of Versailles was signed by Germany and the allied powers, which consisted of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and the United States, on 28th June 1919, in the hall of mirrors, effectively ending World War One (WW1) after an armistice of seven months . This treaty established the League of Nations and decided the repercussions that Germany would have to pay for instigating the war. Some of these repercussions were demilitarization, losing ten percent of its overall land and other financial obligations. These repercussions humiliated Germany and turned the allies against themselves. This paper will focus on how the Treaty of Versailles caused more problems than it solved by causing resentment between Germany and the rest of Europe …show more content…
France wanted territory returned to them, including the complete restoration of Poland. France also wished to completely disassemble Germany for fear of her rising to power once more. However, France did not have the finances for such a feat, in turn, she tried to get as harsh a treaty as possible. America wanted to no longer partake in the war and to form a League of Nations as well as making all nations disarm. These different agendas made it impossible to write a treaty that every country was happy …show more content…
Meaning that this treaty was based on what the allies thought Germany should pay without letting them have any say in the overall result. This treaty was put together by the big three, Britain, France and America. Other allies were hardly involved and no defeated states were included, making the Treaty of Versailles a treaty among the allies, not between Germany and the allies. There were originally plans to include Germany but seeing how the treaty was hastily put together and the allies were having a hard time compromising amongst themselves the idea to include Germany in negotiations was soon forgotten. This complicated matters since there was not a sense of defeat among the German people because no soldier had made it into Germany unless that soldier was German or a prisoner of war and some thought their army to be undefeated . It just worsened the relationships between Germany and the rest of
The treaty of Versailles was a treaty signed at the end of World War I by Germany and the Allies. United States, Great Britain, France, and Italy negotiated the treaty at the peace conference held in Versailles beginning January 18, 1919. The treaty reduced Germany’s armed forces to very low levels and prohibited Germany from possessing certain kinds of weapons, it also established Germany’s liability for reparations. The treaty was supposed to ensure peace and help Europe recover from the war. In my opinion the treaty did not help with any of those two subjects.
How did the Treaty of Versailles help cause WWII? The same treaty that ended the first world war played a huge role in starting the second. WWI ended on November 11th, 1918 with 17 million casualties, 7 months later the official document to end the war, the Treaty of Versailles, was created & signed. Leaders of the United States, France, and Great Britain shaped the terms of the treaty.
Almost all nations desired to completely destroy Germany and make them work almost like slaves (Doc 3). The other nations act as if they had no part or fault in the war when in reality they were part of it just as much as Germany. Great Britain, France, and Italy all wanted revenge and saw this as their opportunity to get it. The treaty caused restrictions to their military and also made Germany lose their territory and colonies. The fault was entirely placed on their shoulders and the weight only became greater with the treaty. Germany was also not the one to start the war but yet were accused of it
The treaty of Versailles helped cause World War ll because it caused many germans to be angry and that caused them to want to follow Hitler and then a second world war had began. Using document number one which is German Territorial Losses it states, “No nation can remove this hand from its throat except by sword.” This shows that I can use this document to show the Treaty of Versailles helped world war ll by making Germany angry and bringing Hitler into power by him saying they he can help germany get out of the mess they are in by going to war or refusing to do what the treaty of Versailles said that Germany had to do. Document number two which is Treaty of Versailles Article 160 states, “the total number of of military troops in Germany must not exceed over one hundred thousand men…” This shows that the Treaty of Versailles helped cause WWii because it shows
The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I, and because Germany had lost the war, the treaty was very harsh against Germany. The treaty stated that Germany must accept full responsibility for the previously ended war and pay thirty three billion dollars for the damages that remained from the war. This treaty left Germany and the citizens with a shattered economy and chaos. The Treaty of Versailles left many Germans angry and frustrated due to the long term effects it
The Treaty of Versailles was a major event in the 1920’s that was largely responsible for the events to follow, including the rise of Hitler and World War 2. Woodrow Wilson came up with a fourteen point plan of how to end the war with fairness and lasting peace. Germany was willing to accept the consequences because they trusted the treaty would be based off of Wilsons’ plan. Unfortunately for Germany and her allies, there were meetings with the four main allie leaders at Versailles to determine the final terms of the treaty without them. These men were determined to punish Germany, excluding Wilson, and hold them completely responsible for World War One. The consequences for Germany were unreasonable and unfair because Germany was not able
Germany was believed to be the cause of World War one, which made other European countries want to severely hurt Germany’s military and economy so that Germany couldn’t achieve future aggressions. The peace treaty called the Treaty of Versailles did just that. On June 28, 1919, the major powers in Europe, other than Germany, negotiated Germany’s punishment for the war. Germany’s military was limited to 100,000 men, they lost many of their colonies, they were forced to disarm their troops from the Rhineland, and worst of all they were forced to pay for all of the destruction caused by the war, which totaled to about 40 billion dollars. The Treaty of Versailles crushed Germany; they were weak and desperate, until Nazi Germany came to power.
The Treaty of Versailles was to blame the outbreak of WW2. The treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties at the end of WW1 signed on 28th July 1919. Overall, the treaty of Versailles was to blame for
What if your world changed in a moment, a quick yet tedious second in which you knew nothing would be the same? Realizing that your world was falling apart crumbling at the edges, the cascading pieces taking away those you love and your will to survive. This is what many felt like after the treaty of Versailles was signed by the November criminals, but many German natives suffered the treaty’s repercussions decades after the treaty was signed. This formal agreement was significant in Germany from 1919 to 1939 because it led to Hitler’s rise to power, distrust among German citizens, and a newfound opposition to all those who created the treaty.
The final product of the Versailles Treaty’s terms was the humiliation of Germany and more importantly, its individuals. Supportingly, Document D reports that, “The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies.” (Document D) As the Treaty enforces blame, it singles out Germany. This attempt to prevent war only fueled the fire, creating bitterness that would be a massive contribution to World War II. In agreement, Document D continues the theme, relaying that, “What they knew of the treaty was etched
The Treaty of Versailles was penned during the Paris Peace Conference, mainly to decide upon Germany’s consequences for beginning World War One. When Germany signed the treaty, it lost a tenth of its land to surrounding countries. Not only did they lose part of their country, but they also lost their overseas territories, including Chinese ports, Pacific Islands, and African colonies. One of the actual causes of the war was that Germany wanted ‘a place in the sun’, and requested
Despite the fact that the Treaty of Versailles have marked as an end of World War I, it have led to an unbalanced world. The Treaty of Versailles have affected Germany because they have lost their territory, weapons, military strength, etc. due to the determination of France of punishing Germany. The treaty have led to an unbalanced world because it was a prejudiced treaty and not a treaty with justice, fairness, or peace. Based on the perspectives of the United States and Germany, the Treaty of Versailles was unfair, while France thought the treaty was a punishment that was not harsh enough because they were determined to punish Germany; therefore, the different perspectives of the Treaty of Versailles concludes the treaty have led to an unjust and a corrupted world.
The Treaty of Versailles was a very unfair document towards Germany. According to Mike Dowling, the treaty had taken away Germany's overseas colonies and their coal source. Germany could not build large ships and their army was a joke.
The Treaty of Versailles was a way to bring down Germany, according to France. France would be able to take back its territory due to Wilson’s fourteen points and also copied into document seven. France got back Alsace-Lorraine and was able to work its coal mines. In the aftermath of the war, France
The Treaty of Versailles was quickly doomed to fail as a foreign policy strategy of isolationism, by the U.S. and Great Britain, left France extremely vulnerable to the threat of a German military attack. This strategy of isolationism also weakened what became known as the League of Nations, an international organization dedicated to preserving peace. The League of Nations however, quickly became irrelevant as the U.S. refused to join and the rest of the members conducted a policy of appeasement that inevitably lead to the start of WWII. The Treaty of Versailles, also contained a war-guilt clause, which Germany was forced to sign, thus making Germany accept blame for the start of the war. Germany was also forced to pay steep restitutions and had it’s military might cut down. The combination of these clauses, quickly angered the German people who believed they were being treated unfairly by not only Europe, but also by their government who signed the treaty. This anger stayed with many Germans, and was eventually used a tool for Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and the start of
