Graduation day is one of the most important days of any students’ life. Once you get to college you start to think about the job you want or even if you will find a job after college. The Tulane University graduating class also called the “Katrina Class” of 2009 got very lucky having a successful woman, Ellen DeGeneres, give her congrats and a commencement speech. It was a friendly hostile environment. She is a rich and successful celebrity who came from nothing which is the ethos that she brings. She was born and raised in New Orleans and in 2005 was the damaging Hurricane Katrina that hit that city. The fall class of 2005 had been through a lot. Ellen is known for her humor which she uses throughout her speech, but with most speeches it has a lesson that needs to be told and she shares how …show more content…
Ellen tells the audience that the road she had to take to become successful was long. She begins with an emotional speech which she starts to talk about a time in her life where was just at a complete loss and how she had no ambition and no idea what to do with her life, which brings in Pathos. She was living in a basement apartment with no heat, no money, no air and lots of fleas, telling the audience that it would be so easy if she could just call God and ask him why her girlfriend is gone and why fleas are in her apartment. She tells them about a one-sided conversation that she had with God. In this conversation she decides that she is going to be the first woman to ever have a sit down with The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Although she never did stand-up comedy before then she became the first and only woman to ever have a sit down with Johnny Carson. Soon she realized that she was so busy trying to please everybody else that she was not making herself happy. She didn’t tell anyone she
Jacob Neusner’s commencement speech points the finger not only at the graduating students but mainly at the faculty members. He sways towards how easy-going, laid back, and forgiving the professors and other faculty members were towards their students. In that sense, Neusner clearly states that these students aren’t prepared for what’s about to come because they have always had someone hold their hand every step of the way and shown forgiveness in this fantasy called “college.” College is supposed to help you get your feet wet and aid students with preparation for the harsh so called real world. Many thoughts ran through my brain while reading this speech as did my emotions which were up and down like a rollercoaster. As much as I agree with Jacob Neusner on the fact that college and the “real world” are
On Sunday, May 23, 1999, Anna Quindlen made the Commencement Speech at Mount Holyoke College. During this speech, Quindlen spoke out to graduates, offering encouragement and advice as they prepared to join the workforce. Her intension was to inform them of perfection, people’s standards, and being you. Quindlen uses examples from her life to fulfill her purpose.
Most graduates have a lot of stress and worry about their futures, the uncertainty of where they are going or what they will become. Ellen is relatable when she tells the graduates how she didn’t know who shes was, considering that, she was still dating men. Another use of a rhetorical question “But why am I here today?” to introduce an anecdote about her growing up in New Orleans. This question takes the audience’s attention back to her, because, consequently, they know that Ellen will explain why she is there; giving them a reason to listen to her words. Once again, Ellen asks “What else can happen to you?” in order to commend the graduates of having success after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. She uses the hyperbole and rhetorical question, “So what I’m saying is, when you’re older, a lot of you will be gay. Anyone writing this stuff down? Parents?” this keeps everybody’s attention and loops the parents into relating the commencement speech to them as well. Rhetorical questions help Ellen by giving the crowd small moments to reflect and invites them into her speech, connecting to them and allowing them to smile during serious content.
Against all odds, Ellen never gives up her belief that there is a place for her in the world, a home that will satisfy all her longing for love, acceptance, and order. Her eventual success in finding that
Graduation is a ceremony that almost every single person is familiar with, thus building the connection of the reader. Graduation is an important transition in one’s life. It represents an accomplishment and signifies moving on to something better, more important and the pathway to use one’s knowledge to achieve one’s life goals. It calls for a celebration along with a grand commencement among family, friends, and peers. Maya Angelou’s, “Graduation”, is about a young African American girl, who is excited and proud of her academic achievements. She strives to bring the reader into her world, while looking forward to her grand commencement. There is no doubt that Maya Angelou is a fantastic writer and by her standards, “Graduation” is an amazing piece of writing and what Angelou does best is evoke feelings and empathy from her readers. By relating to them and detailing her emotions for everyone to see, she emphasizes her sense of being wronged Angelou’s graduation was a pivotal moment in her life. She led the readers through her graduation as if they are sitting alongside her. Angelou’s method of telling her story is through imagery; Angelou describes the graduates, “Like travelers with exotic destinations on their minds…”(pg10) “everyone said I looked like a sunbeam.” (Pg. 13) These give the readers a true picture of what was going on and imagery vision of how broadly the kids were
Ellen DeGeneres once said that “Life is like one big Mardi Gras. But instead of showing your boobs, show people your brain, and if they like what they see, you’ll have more beads than you know what to do with and you’ll be drunk, most of the time” (DeGeneres). In the 2009 commencement speech to University of Tulane’s “Katrina Class”, she utilizes devices such as hyperbole, allusions, and rhetorical questions to make the speech effective in achieving her purpose of inspiring her audience of graduating students to be true to themselves by following their own path and passions and to realize that one will have to overcome hurdles to reach one’s idea of success. Even though DeGeneres uses a variety of rhetorical devices, her speech mainly appeals to emotions through comedic anecdotes and witty lines infused throughout the speech.
In 2010, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill was the commencement speaker for California State University, Stanislaus. This speech was addressed to the graduating class of 2010, their friends and family who were attending the ceremony, the California State University, Stanislaus faculty and staff, and people who may have not been able to attend the ceremony, but were able to watch it on a DVD recording. This speech was intended to congratulate the graduates and offer them advice as they enter into the “real world” post-graduation. However, the speech also had to address the family and friends of the graduates and the university’s faculty and staff, since they presumably made a difference in the lives of the graduates.
Famous actors, musicians, politicians, artists and authors are often called upon to deliver commencement addresses at prestigious places of higher learning. It doesn't take Nobel-Prize-winning social scientists or psychologists, or speech professors to predict what these elite guest speakers will say on such occasions such as these. The speaker will tell the graduating class to aim high, never give up, make the most of opportunities, and do as our forbearers did: pull yourselves up by the bootstraps. But when Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks showed up at Vassar College to present the commencement address, his presentation avoided those clichés and platitudes. Hanks was refreshing original and yet remarkably pragmatic. This paper critiques Hanks' themes, examines his rhetorical techniques, and editorially analyzes his purpose.
Do you believe in happy endings? Because Barbara Jill Walters proved that it was possible. Barbara was a journalist and writer, she loved writing just like any other writers. She was born on September 25, 1929, in Boston, Massachusetts and she was born Jewish. Her parents are Dena Seletsky Walters and Lou Walters who was a nightclub impresario She had two siblings, Jacqueline who was born developmentally disabled and died at a young age, and a brother Burton who died of pneumonia. Since both of her siblings passed away this gave her an impact to grow more mature than the other kids her age. In 1937, Barbara’s father opened a collection of nightclubs that expanded his business from Boston, Massachusetts, to Miami Beach, Florida. Therefore Barbara
It was kind of inspirational reading about this, and I felt like it related more to me since I'm attending UNCC. She was a strong woman and wanted to build this up herself, and I admire that. It grew because of her own hard work, not the work of anyone else. This reminded me of one of the speeches made during the Day of Convocation, by a student who had actually asked her about transferring to another school. She asked him whether he wanted to be the one to help UNCC grow, or go to a “better” school and just take what they had to offer, having no part in it's success at all. This made me think a little about myself. I was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill. Even though they may be more well known, I still wanted to come here instead. I didn't have the same reasoning behind my choice as what Ms. Bonnie had told that student, but really liked hearing those words. Again, it's all very inspirational and I want to do my part in making things even better than they already
Graduates of Dartmouth College were granted a pass from the typical clichés of commencement speeches when comedian Conan O’Brien took the podium to usher them into the next phase of their lives. Though littered with comical jabs at the college and its graduates, O’Brien’s address offered the audience candid life advice based on his successes and failures throughout his career.
Khloe Kardashian has been by Lamar Odom's side for a lot, but it sounds like she might finally be done putting up with Lamar and the way that he has been acting lately. Radar Online shared today that a source has revealed that Khloe is considering getting a restraining order against Lamar. She did finally file for divorce again recently, and Khloe has been pretty quiet about her love life lately. If Khloe is dating someone new, she isn't sharing who it is just yet.
James Pelosi suffered humiliation and an unfair judgement throughout his years as a potential Lieutenant. It is very typical for any graduate to get an applause and cheering walking up the podium to receive their diploma on their graduation day. However, that was not the case for James Pelosi. Although he expected to be booed while coming down the podium after receiving his diploma, instead there was silence in the audience. When he arrived his class the next day, James was surprised to have received a different congratulatory treatment. It was a very significant experience for him because he felt accepted for once.
“Be yourself. Above all, let who you are, what you are, what you believe shine through every sentence you write, every piece you finish” by John Jakes (an American writer ). This quote summed up encourages people to be confident in them and show the world. In today’s society not many people believe in themselves and are proud of who they are. Ellen DeGeneres, NPH, and Lisa Jordan are examples of people who be themselves like everyone should be.
